RAM's separate 2022 4x2, 4x4 and box-off charts publish maximum trailer ratings from 10,440 to 20,000 lb. Those endpoints describe different trucks. The 20,000-lb result appears in selected 4x2 Crew Cab rows with the 6.7L Cummins, 68RFE six-speed, 3.73 axle and configuration-specific GCWR. The 10,440-lb minimum belongs to the U.S. 4x4 Power Wagon RamBox row with the 6.4L HEMI, 4.10 axle, 8,565-lb GVWR and 18,000-lb GCWR. This guide preserves all 62 completed-pickup ratings plus 24 gas box-off ratings without assigning any catalogue result to an unseen VIN or completed upfit.
Direct answer: 10,440 to 20,000 lb across RAM's 2022 charts
There is no single towing capacity for every 2022 RAM 2500. RAM attaches each maximum-trailer result to drivetrain, cab, box, engine, transmission, axle ratio, market, GVWR, base weight, GAWR and GCWR. The maximum and minimum therefore answer different configuration questions.
The separate box-off publication adds a 14,520–17,550-lb gas range. Those are not chassis-cab ratings or shortcuts for a finished service body. They use completion-weight and VECI-label fields that remain part of the selection and certification process.
| Endpoint | Exact 2022 branch | GVWR / GCWR | Maximum trailer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Completed-pickup maximum | Selected 4x2 Crew Cab Cummins/68RFE/3.73 rows | 9,900 or 10,000 / 27,700–27,840 lb | 20,000 lb |
| Completed-pickup minimum | U.S. 4x4 Power Wagon Crew Cab RamBox, HEMI/4.10 | 8,565 / 18,000 lb | 10,440 lb |
| Box-off maximum | 4x2 Regular Cab 8-foot, HEMI/4.10 | 9,900 or 10,000 / 24,200 lb | 17,550 lb |
| Box-off minimum | Canada 4x4 Crew Cab 8-foot, HEMI/3.73 | 9,900 / 22,000 lb | 14,520 lb |
Use the exact row as a selector
Start with model year and original market, then identify 4x2 or 4x4, Regular, Crew or Mega Cab, standard box, RamBox or box-off body, engine, transmission and axle. U.S. completed-pickup rows generally use 10,000-lb GVWR while Canada rows generally use 9,900 lb. Power Wagon uses its own 8,565-lb branch.
Do not choose by engine badge or a rounded headline. RAM also prints payload, total/front/rear base weight, front/rear GAWR and GCWR. Return to the source row for those controls, and leave any unknown selector unresolved.
4x2 U.S. and Canada gas matrix
The 6.4L HEMI uses the 8HP75-LCV eight-speed. A 3.73 axle is paired with 22,000-lb GCWR; 4.10 is paired with 24,200 lb. Most U.S. and Canada trailer cells match even though the paired GVWR changes from 10,000 to 9,900 lb.
The only displayed gas difference in the 4x2 pickup chart is the Crew Cab long box: both Canada values are 10 lb lower. That is a row fact, not a formula to apply elsewhere.
| 4x2 body / box | U.S. 3.73 / 4.10 | Canada 3.73 / 4.10 |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab / 8-foot | 15,540 / 17,740 | 15,540 / 17,740 |
| Crew Cab / RamBox | 15,070 / 17,270 | 15,070 / 17,270 |
| Crew Cab / 6-foot-4 standard | 15,190 / 17,390 | 15,190 / 17,390 |
| Crew Cab / 8-foot | 15,060 / 17,260 | 15,050 / 17,250 |
4x2 Cummins matrix
Every diesel row uses the 6.7L Cummins, 68RFE six-speed and 3.73 axle. The 4x2 Crew Cab standard short box prints 20,000 lb in both markets. The U.S. long-box Crew Cab also prints 20,000 lb, while its Canada counterpart is 19,990 lb.
The RamBox pair differs materially: 19,240 lb in the U.S. and 18,820 lb in Canada. The Regular Cab pair matches at 19,990 lb. Retain each displayed market branch.
| 4x2 diesel body / box | GCWR | U.S. | Canada |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab / 8-foot | 27,320 | 19,990 | 19,990 |
| Crew Cab / RamBox | 27,700 | 19,240 | 18,820 |
| Crew Cab / 6-foot-4 standard | 27,700 | 20,000 | 20,000 |
| Crew Cab / 8-foot | 27,840 | 20,000 | 19,990 |
4x4 Regular Cab and Mega Cab gas matrix
Regular Cab gas values are 10 lb lower in the Canada rows. Mega Cab values match across markets: 14,340/16,530 lb with RamBox and 14,470/16,660 lb with the standard box. The familiar GVWR difference does not create a uniform trailer-rating difference.
All standard gas rows preserve both 3.73 and 4.10 choices. A 4.10 result is not permission to ignore the exact cab, box, weights or loaded limits.
| 4x4 gas body / box | U.S. 3.73 / 4.10 | Canada 3.73 / 4.10 |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab / 8-foot | 15,220 / 17,420 | 15,210 / 17,410 |
| Mega Cab / RamBox | 14,340 / 16,530 | 14,340 / 16,530 |
| Mega Cab / 6-foot-4 standard | 14,470 / 16,660 | 14,470 / 16,660 |
4x4 Crew Cab gas matrix
Crew Cab market differences move in both directions. Canada is 10 lb higher on the long box, 30 lb higher with RamBox and 10 lb lower with the standard short box. Those small differences are retained exactly.
Power Wagon is excluded from this standard matrix because its 8,565-lb GVWR and 18,000-lb GCWR create a distinct lower branch.
| 4x4 Crew Cab box | U.S. 3.73 / 4.10 | Canada 3.73 / 4.10 |
|---|---|---|
| 8-foot | 14,700 / 16,900 | 14,710 / 16,910 |
| 6-foot-4 RamBox | 14,760 / 16,960 | 14,790 / 16,990 |
| 6-foot-4 standard | 14,890 / 17,090 | 14,880 / 17,080 |
4x4 Cummins matrix
The highest 4x4 diesel result is 19,990 lb in the U.S. Crew Cab standard short-box row. Its Canada counterpart is 19,340 lb. Regular Cab matches at 19,980 lb, while all five other market pairs differ materially.
Mega Cab remains the lowest diesel family at 13,480–15,620 lb. Cab and box mass, base weight and GCWR matter even though the engine, transmission and axle ratio are shared.
| 4x4 diesel body / box | GCWR | U.S. | Canada |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab / 8-foot | 27,650 | 19,980 | 19,980 |
| Mega Cab / RamBox | 24,240 | 14,480 | 13,480 |
| Mega Cab / 6-foot-4 standard | 24,240 | 15,620 | 14,620 |
| Crew Cab / 8-foot | 26,400 | 18,230 | 17,210 |
| Crew Cab / RamBox | 27,980 | 18,840 | 18,220 |
| Crew Cab / 6-foot-4 standard | 27,980 | 19,990 | 19,340 |
Power Wagon remains a separate U.S. branch
RAM prints two 4x4 Power Wagon rows: 10,440 lb with RamBox and 10,590 lb with the standard 6-foot-4 box. Both use the 6.4L HEMI, 8HP75-LCV, 4.10 axle, 8,565-lb GVWR and 18,000-lb GCWR.
No 3.73 or Cummins result is printed, and the reviewed Canada matrix has no Power Wagon row. A standard Crew Cab value cannot fill that absence.
Six gas-only box-off groups are independently published
The September 2021 box-off publication contains Regular Cab and Crew Cab, short- and long-frame, 4x2 and 4x4 groups. Each group has U.S. 10,000-lb and Canada 9,900-lb GVWR rows with 3.73 and 4.10 axles. It publishes VECI-label MCVW and frontal area, UVW and maximum-upfit-weight fields in addition to the towing column.
No Cummins box-off row appears. The table below preserves the 24 printed gas results and does not calculate a diesel alternative.
| Box-off body / drive | U.S. 3.73 / 4.10 | Canada 3.73 / 4.10 |
|---|---|---|
| 4x2 Regular Cab / 8-foot | 15,350 / 17,550 | 15,350 / 17,550 |
| 4x2 Crew Cab / 6-foot-4 | 14,960 / 17,160 | 14,960 / 17,160 |
| 4x2 Crew Cab / 8-foot | 14,890 / 17,090 | 14,880 / 17,080 |
| 4x4 Regular Cab / 8-foot | 15,030 / 17,230 | 15,040 / 17,240 |
| 4x4 Crew Cab / 6-foot-4 | 14,690 / 16,890 | 14,690 / 16,890 |
| 4x4 Crew Cab / 8-foot | 14,540 / 16,740 | 14,520 / 16,720 |
Box-off is not chassis cab and requires final-body controls
RAM's box-off notes assume a body-completion weight of 80 lb per foot from the end of the cab to the end of frame. The chart also displays 8,500-lb MCVW, 58-square-foot frontal area and 8,000-lb UVW fields. These are configuration constraints, not permission to install any body at the printed trailer value.
The completed vehicle, maximum upfit weight, axle distribution, labels and alterer documentation still control. This page does not certify a service body, flat deck or Canadian completion.
Canada differences are row-specific
The completed-pickup diesel differences are 420 lb for 4x2 Crew Cab RamBox, 1,000 lb for each Mega Cab, 1,020 lb for 4x4 Crew Cab long box, 620 lb for 4x4 Crew Cab RamBox and 650 lb for the standard short box. Other diesel pairs match or differ by only 10 lb.
Gas differences are zero, 10 or 30 lb and can move upward or downward. The box-off chart adds 10- and 20-lb differences in its own rows. No flat Canadian deduction reproduces these source cells.
| Material diesel difference | U.S. | Canada | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4x2 Crew Cab RamBox | 19,240 | 18,820 | -420 lb |
| 4x4 Mega Cab RamBox | 14,480 | 13,480 | -1,000 lb |
| 4x4 Mega Cab standard | 15,620 | 14,620 | -1,000 lb |
| 4x4 Crew Cab 8-foot | 18,230 | 17,210 | -1,020 lb |
| 4x4 Crew Cab RamBox | 18,840 | 18,220 | -620 lb |
| 4x4 Crew Cab standard short | 19,990 | 19,340 | -650 lb |
GCWR remains both selector and loaded-combination limit
Gas completed-pickup and box-off rows use 18,000, 22,000 or 24,200-lb GCWR. Diesel rows use 24,240, 26,400, 27,320, 27,650, 27,700, 27,840 or 27,980 lb. Those values distinguish rows and limit the loaded combination.
A trailer cell never authorizes exceeding GCWR, GVWR, either GAWR, tire capacity or hitch ratings. Weigh the loaded truck and trailer, retain separate axle weights and compare every limit.
Payload and maximum trailer weight are mutually exclusive estimates
RAM calls both values estimated, rounded to the nearest 10 lb and mutually exclusive. Payload equals GVWR minus base weight. The chart's full payload and full trailer value are not simultaneous allowances.
People, cargo, accessories, hitch hardware and tongue or pin weight consume capacity. A large trailer number can coexist with insufficient payload or rear-axle margin for a specific loaded trailer.
RAM's SAE J2807 assumptions define the catalogue calculation
The notes specify 300 lb passenger weight, 100 lb options weight, 75 lb conventional-hitch equipment, 70 lb gooseneck equipment and 250 lb fifth-wheel equipment. Tongue weight is 10 percent for conventional towing and 15 percent for fifth-wheel or gooseneck.
Those inputs are not measurements of an individual truck. Different occupants, options, hardware, completed body or tongue weight change the remaining margin.
A vehicle-specific check has three layers
First identify the exact catalogue row. Second verify the truck's labels, original powertrain, axle, tires, hitch and modifications. Third compare loaded scale weights with GVWR, both GAWRs, GCWR and every equipment limit.
Use loaded trailer weight rather than advertised dry weight. Water, batteries, propane, cargo and installed equipment change the combination. A matching chart row is necessary evidence, not the final loaded calculation.
A reproducible 2022 RAM 2500 worksheet
Record every selector before copying a trailer value. If any field is unknown, keep the result unresolved rather than selecting the largest compatible-looking number.
| Field | Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Truck identity | VIN, market, year, pickup or box-off | Chooses the source family |
| Body | Drive, cab, box/body status | Chooses the correct group |
| Powertrain | Engine, transmission, axle | Chooses the rating row |
| Labels | GVWR, both GAWRs, tires | Controls the physical truck |
| Combination | GCWR, hitch and trailer rating | Controls the loaded combination |
| Scale | Truck, axle and trailer weights | Tests actual remaining margin |
Keep 2022 independent from 2021 and later model years
The overall endpoints match 2021, but many cells do not: 2022 changes gas GCWR to 22,000/24,200 lb, changes numerous trailer values and restores real box-off data in a separate publication. Matching headlines do not make the matrices interchangeable.
Later trucks can change powertrains, outputs, availability and ratings again. The general RAM 2500 towing page owns broad intent; every year-specific sibling needs independent evidence.
Source method and provenance limit
The six-page 4x4 and three-page box-off PDFs were retrieved from RAM's Body Builder service. RAM's current service did not expose the matching 4x2 file during this review, so the five-page manufacturer-authored document was checked through an independent archival host. All 14 pages were hashed, rendered and visually checked against layout-preserving extraction on 14 September 2026.
The review retains 22 completed-pickup body/market groups, 62 engine/axle ratings, six box-off groups and 24 box-off ratings. The archival location of the 4x2 copy is an evidence-provenance limit, not grounds to relabel it as a live RAM-hosted file.
Frequently asked questions
Can every 2022 RAM 2500 tow 20,000 lb? No; that value belongs to specific 4x2 Cummins rows. Is Canada simply 100 lb lower? No; GVWR commonly is, while trailer values may match or differ by 10–1,020 lb.
Does 4.10 identify the overall maximum? No; the completed-pickup 20,000-lb rows use the diesel's 3.73 axle. Can a diesel use the box-off table? No diesel box-off row is printed. Can payload and trailer maximum be added? No; RAM calls them mutually exclusive estimates.
What this guide establishes—and what it does not
It establishes RAM's published 2022 selector across 62 completed-pickup and 24 box-off ratings, keeping engines, transmissions, axle ratios, drive, cab, box, market, GVWR, GCWR and completion status attached.
It does not certify an unseen Canadian VIN, completed upfit, installed hitch, actual loaded weight, axle or tire margin, trailer brakes, legal operation, reliability, failure rate, inventory, sellers, dealer counts, prices, financing or offers.
Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
