RAM 2500 towing capacity is a configuration result, not a badge-level promise. In RAM's U.S. 2024 Heavy Duty chart, the highest reviewed 2500 cell is 20,000 lb for the identified 4x2 Crew Cab Tradesman with an 8-foot box, 6.7L Cummins, 68RFE six-speed, 3.73 axle, 10,000-lb GVWR and 27,837-lb GCWR. Other diesel cells in the same chart run as low as 14,900 lb, while the principal 9,900/10,000-lb-GVWR gas rows run from 14,500 to 17,720 lb and the Power Wagon row is lower. Cab, box, drivetrain, axle, GVWR, GCWR, equipment and hitch type must therefore stay attached to every number. Sources were checked on 9 September 2026.
Exact 2024 answer
RAM's 2024 manufacturer chart contains a 20,000-lb maximum-trailer cell in the RAM 2500 portion of the standard-output 6.7L Cummins/68RFE table. The reviewed high row is a 4x2 Crew Cab Tradesman with the 8-foot box, 3.73 axle, 10,000-lb GVWR and 27,837-lb GCWR. A neighbouring 9,900-lb-GVWR entry and other cab or drive columns publish different values.
This is a generic, properly equipped U.S. configuration value—not a rating inferred from the Cummins badge and not a result for every 2024 diesel. RAM's chart rounds weights to the nearest 10 lb and keeps 4x2/4x4 values in separate cells. Match the truck to the complete row before using the figure.
Selected 2024 RAM 2500 diesel cells
The table shows selected high-capacity cells from the manufacturer matrix, not every trim or special model. RAM also publishes lower diesel entries, including a 14,900-lb Rebel cell and 15,840/15,880-lb Mega Cab entries. Do not interpolate between rows or replace a missing configuration with the closest-looking one.
| 6.7L Cummins / 68RFE / 3.73 configuration | GVWR | GCWR | Maximum trailer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab, 8-foot box, 4x2 | 10,000 lb | 27,320 lb | 19,990 lb |
| Regular Cab, 8-foot box, 4x4 | 10,000 lb | 27,650 lb | 19,960 lb |
| Crew Cab, 6-foot-4-inch box, 4x2 | 10,000 lb | 27,700 lb | 19,980 lb |
| Crew Cab, 8-foot box, 4x2 | 10,000 lb | 27,837 lb | 20,000 lb |
Gas and diesel are separate row families
These are observed extrema across identified 2500 cells, not continuous ranges. The 2024 chart lists the gas engine at 410 hp and 429 lb-ft with an eight-speed, and the standard-output diesel at 370 hp and 850 lb-ft with the 68RFE six-speed. The High-Output Cummins/Aisin rows belong to RAM 3500 pickup models in this chart and are excluded from the 2024 RAM 2500 data above.
| 2024 RAM 2500 row family | Engine / transmission | Axle | Reviewed maximum-trailer span |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main gas rows | 6.4L HEMI / 8HP75-LCV | 3.73 | 14,500–15,520 lb |
| Main gas rows | 6.4L HEMI / 8HP75-LCV | 4.10 | 16,690–17,720 lb |
| Special Power Wagon gas row | 6.4L HEMI / 8HP75-LCV | 4.10 | 10,610 lb |
| Diesel rows | 6.7L Cummins / 68RFE | 3.73 | 14,900–20,000 lb |
Payload and trailer rating cannot be combined
RAM states that trailer-weight and payload ratings are mutually exclusive and that GAWR, GVWR and GCWR must never be exceeded. Its 2024 payload table reaches 4,000 lb in the 10,000-lb-GVWR gas Regular Cab 4x2 row and 3,150 lb in the corresponding diesel row, but neither generic maximum is the remaining payload of an optioned truck.
The 20,000-lb diesel towing row publishes a rounded generic payload alongside base-weight assumptions. Passengers, cargo, accessories, the hitch and trailer tongue or pin weight consume the actual truck's carrying allowance. Use the door/certification labels and loaded axle weights instead of adding the brochure's maximum payload and maximum trailer figures together.
Hitch type changes the calculation
RAM recommends 10 percent conventional tongue weight and limits the Class V receiver tongue weight to 1,800 lb in the reviewed chart. It also says a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch is required for trailers over 18,000 lb. A 20,000-lb published trailer cell therefore does not mean a conventional receiver can carry a 2,000-lb tongue.
For a fifth-wheel or gooseneck, verify the actual hitch rating, installation, bed and frame compatibility, clearances and loaded pin weight. The available factory prep provisions described by RAM are not themselves a hitch and do not erase payload, rear GAWR, tire, wheel or trailer limits.
SAE J2807 assumptions are part of the number
The chart says trailer-weight rating and tow-vehicle trailering weight are calculated under SAE J2807 using 300 lb of passengers, 100 lb of options and standardized trailering-equipment weights: 75 lb for a conventional hitch, 70 lb for a gooseneck and 250 lb for a fifth-wheel.
An actual truck can carry more people, factory options, tools, fuel-system accessories, a tonneau, bed storage, auxiliary equipment or a heavier hitch. Do not subtract curb weight from GCWR and call the remainder the answer; match the published row, then test payload, axles, hitch and measured combination weight independently.
Cab, box, drive and axle select the row
Record whether the truck is Regular, Crew or Mega Cab; whether it has the 6-foot-4-inch or 8-foot box; and whether it is 4x2 or 4x4. Confirm the 3.73 or 4.10 axle and the 9,900- or 10,000-lb GVWR variant from authoritative equipment records and labels. Trim or special-model identity matters where RAM publishes a separate row.
The 4.10 axle expands the gas row's GCWR from 22,000 to 24,200 lb in the main table, while the reviewed 2500 diesel rows use 3.73. A seller's description, hitch sticker or visual axle guess is not enough. The order/build record and exact model-year chart should agree with the truck.
Do not transfer current-model figures backward
RAM's current U.S. and Canadian pages describe the 2026 RAM 2500 with a High-Output 6.7L Cummins and TorqueFlite HD eight-speed, and the U.S. page advertises a 20,000-lb maximum. That current powertrain description is materially different from the 2024 chart's standard-output 370-hp/850-lb-ft Cummins and 68RFE six-speed.
An equal-looking headline maximum does not make the row interchangeable. Use the 2024 chart for a 2024 truck and the exact later model-year guide for a later truck. The separate year-specific towing targets in this program will retain their own evidence and configuration boundaries.
Canadian truck verification
The numeric matrix summarized here is RAM's U.S. 2024 manufacturer chart. It does not establish an individual Canadian truck's rating, provincial operating requirement or licence class. RAM Canada's current page demonstrates that Canadian equipment and disclosures are presented separately, but it covers 2026 and cannot validate a 2024 vehicle.
For a Canadian 2024 RAM 2500, obtain the VIN/build or sales-code record, exact Canadian owner literature, certification and carrying-capacity labels, axle ratio, cab/box/drive identity, receiver or in-bed hitch documentation, tire and wheel ratings and loaded scale tickets. No VIN, label photograph, build sheet, hitch record or measured weight was supplied for this page.
A practical towing worksheet
If any field is missing, pause at the advertised maximum. The towing tool can organize the load calculation, but it cannot recover an unknown axle ratio, option weight, hitch installation or certification value. The lowest applicable truck, hitch, tire, trailer or legal limit controls.
| Check | Evidence to retain | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Truck identity | VIN/build record, model year, trim, cab, box, drive, engine, transmission and axle | One exact manufacturer row identified |
| Truck loading | Door/certification labels plus loaded truck and separate axle scale weights | GVWR and both GAWRs remain within limits |
| Trailer | Trailer GVWR, loaded scale weight, axle/tire labels and brake equipment | Loaded weight is within the selected trailer rating |
| Coupling | Receiver or fifth-wheel/gooseneck model, installation and component labels | Every component supports the actual load and hitch type |
| Combination | Loaded truck plus loaded trailer | At or below the row's GCWR with practical reserve |
Used RAM 2500 towing evidence to inspect
Photograph the labels and receiver or in-bed hardware; obtain build data and service records; and inspect the frame, hitch mounting, bed structure, rear suspension, steering, brakes, cooling system, trailer wiring, seven-pin socket and brake-controller operation. Look for collision repair, corrosion, overload evidence and changes to tires, wheels or suspension.
Weigh the truck in normal travel condition with occupants, fuel, cargo and hitch installed, then weigh the coupled combination and axles with the intended trailer loaded. A clean road test does not prove capacity, and aftermarket parts do not rewrite the manufacturer's GVWR, GAWR or GCWR.
RAM 2500 towing-capacity questions
What is the maximum towing capacity in the reviewed 2024 chart? The highest RAM 2500 cell is 20,000 lb for an identified 4x2 Crew Cab Tradesman, 8-foot box, 6.7L Cummins/68RFE, 3.73 axle, 10,000-lb GVWR and 27,837-lb GCWR configuration.
Does every 2024 Cummins RAM 2500 tow 20,000 lb? No. The manufacturer chart publishes diesel cells from 14,900 to 20,000 lb depending on the exact row.
What is the 2024 gas maximum? The highest reviewed main 6.4L HEMI 4.10-axle RAM 2500 cell is 17,720 lb; special models and other configurations are lower.
Can a conventional hitch tow the 20,000-lb maximum? RAM limits Class V receiver tongue weight to 1,800 lb and requires a fifth-wheel or gooseneck above 18,000 lb in this chart.
Is the 2026 High-Output Cummins the same as the 2024 diesel? No. The current pages describe a later High-Output/eight-speed powertrain; the 2024 chart uses the standard-output Cummins/68RFE row for RAM 2500.
Can this page rate a Canadian VIN? No. It routes readers to the correct evidence; the actual Canadian truck's build record, labels, hardware and measured loads govern.
Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
