RAM's six-page 2021 2500 chart publishes maximum trailer ratings from 10,440 to 20,000 lb. Those endpoints describe different trucks. The 20,000-lb maximum appears only in selected 6.7L Cummins configurations with the 68RFE six-speed, 3.73 axle and configuration-specific GCWR; RAM marks those cells as maximum capability. The 10,440-lb minimum belongs to a U.S. 4x4 Crew Cab with Power Wagon equipment, RamBox, 6.4L HEMI, 8HP75-LCV eight-speed, 4.10 axle, 8,565-lb GVWR and 18,000-lb GCWR. This guide preserves all 22 body/market groups, 62 printed engine/axle ratings and every material Canada-only difference without assigning a catalogue result to an unseen VIN.

Direct answer: 10,440 to 20,000 lb across the 2021 chart

A 2021 RAM 2500 has no universal towing rating. RAM keeps drivetrain, cab, box, engine, transmission, axle ratio, GVWR, payload, base weight, GAWR and GCWR attached to each maximum-trailer value. The highest and lowest results answer different configuration questions.

Several diesel rows reach 20,000 lb, but only where the matrix prints that value and its maximum-capability marker. Match the actual truck, original market, certification labels, equipment, hitch and loaded weights. Power Wagon equipment forms a separate lower family.

Use the original row as a selector

Begin with model year and market. RAM separates U.S. rows, usually at 10,000-lb GVWR, from Canada-only rows, usually at 9,900 lb. Then match 4x2 or 4x4, Regular, Crew or Mega Cab, standard box or RamBox, engine, transmission and axle. A blank cell is not permission to calculate a value.

The tables reproduce the maximum-trailer column while retaining the selector branches. RAM's source also publishes payload, total/front/rear base weight, both GAWRs and GCWR. Return to the official row for those controls; do not choose a rating by engine badge or rounded headline alone.

U.S. 6.4L HEMI matrix

RAM pairs the gas engine with the 8HP75-LCV eight-speed. Standard rows publish 3.73 and 4.10 choices; 4.10 accompanies a GCWR change from 21,500 to 24,000 lb. Power Wagon-equipment rows publish only 4.10 and use 18,000-lb GCWR.

The 17,540-lb gas maximum belongs to the 4x2 Regular Cab long box with 4.10. The 10,440-lb low is the distinct Power Wagon-equipment RamBox row, not a general Crew Cab or HEMI limit.

Canada-only 6.4L HEMI matrix

The Canada-only gas matrix has ten groups at 9,900-lb GVWR and no Power Wagon-equipment row. Most trailer values match the U.S. companions; five body groups differ by 10 or 30 lb in varying directions.

These small printed differences remain intact. They do not support a Canadian deduction: the 4x4 Crew Cab RamBox values are 30 lb higher than U.S., while the Regular Cab and short-box Crew Cab values are 10 lb lower.

U.S. 6.7L Cummins matrix

Every diesel row uses the Cummins, 68RFE six-speed and 3.73 axle. Four U.S. configurations print 20,000 lb: 4x2 Regular Cab long box, both 4x2 Crew Cab standard boxes and 4x4 Crew Cab short box.

The other cells show why engine-only answers fail. Mega Cab results are 14,560 or 15,690 lb at 24,240-lb GCWR, while the 4x4 Crew Cab long box is 18,230 lb at 26,400-lb GCWR.

Canada-only 6.7L Cummins matrix

Canada-only diesel rows use 9,900-lb GVWR with the same powertrain and axle family. Three 4x2 standard-box configurations retain 20,000 lb, and the 4x4 Regular Cab retains 19,990 lb.

Six other Canada-only cells materially differ. The Mega Cab rows are exactly 1,000 lb lower than U.S.; the long-box 4x4 Crew Cab is 940 lb lower. These are row facts, not a market formula.

Six diesel market differences remain independent

The six nonmatching diesel pairs range from 420 to 1,000 lb. Other diesel pairs match despite the 100-lb GVWR difference. Selecting the larger U.S. cell for a Canada-only truck would erase the manufacturer table's distinction.

Match original-market documents and vehicle labels. This page does not infer which source row controls an unseen Canadian VIN.

Maximum capability remains configuration-specific

RAM highlights 20,000-lb diesel cells and defines the marker as maximum capability. Each still has its own base weight, GCWR and body configuration. The marker does not detach the number from those conditions.

The same Cummins family also produces 13,560 through 19,990-lb results in other rows. Cab, box, drive, market, base weight and GCWR decide the branch.

GCWR is a selector and loaded-combination control

Diesel GCWR families are 24,240, 26,400, 27,320, 27,650, 27,700, 27,840 and 27,980 lb. Gas rows use 18,000, 21,500 or 24,000 lb. These values distinguish rows and constrain the loaded combination.

A trailer cell never permits exceeding GCWR, GVWR, either GAWR, tire capacity or hitch ratings. Weigh the loaded truck and trailer, retain separate axle weights and compare every limit.

Payload and trailer rating are mutually exclusive estimates

RAM calls payload and maximum trailer weights estimated, rounded to the nearest 10 lb and mutually exclusive. Payload equals GVWR minus base weight. The full displayed payload and full trailer rating cannot be simultaneous allowances.

People, cargo, accessories, hitch hardware and tongue or pin weight consume capacity. A high trailer rating can coexist with inadequate payload or rear-axle margin for a particular trailer.

RAM's SAE J2807 assumptions define the catalogue value

The notes specify 300 lb passenger weight, 100 lb options weight, 75 lb conventional-hitch equipment, 70 lb gooseneck equipment and 250 lb fifth-wheel equipment. Tongue weight is 10 percent for conventional towing and 15 percent for fifth-wheel or gooseneck.

Those are calculation assumptions, not measurements of every truck. Different occupants, options, hardware or tongue weight change remaining margins; brakes, receivers, bed hitches and tires still need verification.

No box-delete rating is printed

RAM's notes retain an 80-lb-per-foot box-off body-completion assumption from the end of the cab to the end of the frame. None of the four 2021 data pages publishes a box-delete configuration row.

The note does not create a rating, and no neighbouring-year value is copied. A service body or flat deck needs final-stage certification, upfitter documents and actual empty axle weights.

Power Wagon equipment stays separate

The U.S. gas page has two Power Wagon-equipment rows: 10,440 lb with RamBox and 10,590 lb with the standard box. Both use the 6.4L, 8HP75-LCV, 4.10 axle, 8,565-lb GVWR and 18,000-lb GCWR.

No 3.73 or Cummins cell is printed, and the Canada-only page has no Power Wagon row. Do not substitute a standard Crew Cab value or invent a Canadian result.

A vehicle-specific check has three layers

First identify the exact catalogue row. Second verify labels, original powertrain, axle, hitch, tires and modifications. Third compare loaded scale weights with GVWR, both GAWRs, GCWR and every equipment limit.

Use loaded trailer weight, not an advertised dry figure. Water, batteries, propane, cargo and installed equipment change the combination. A chart match is essential evidence, not the final loaded calculation.

Keep 2021 separate from 2020 and later charts

The reviewed 2021 diesel maximum rises from 2020's 19,680 lb to 20,000 lb, while the minimum changes from 10,290 to 10,440 lb. Numerous GCWR and body cells change despite familiar engine names.

Later trucks can change outputs, transmissions, availability and rating cells again. The general RAM 2500 towing page keeps broad intent; every year sibling needs independent evidence.

Source method and evidence limits

RAM's manufacturer-hosted six-page PDF was retrieved, hashed and visually checked page by page against structured extraction on 14 September 2026. The review covers two gas data pages, two diesel data pages and two notes pages, retaining 22 body/market groups and 62 printed ratings.

The chart does not certify a Canadian VIN, installed hitch, current payload, tongue or pin weight, axle margin, tires, trailer brakes, completed upfit, legal operation, reliability, failure rate, inventory, sellers, dealer counts, prices, financing or offers.

Frequently asked questions

Can every 2021 RAM 2500 tow 20,000 lb? No; RAM marks only selected Cummins rows. Is Canada simply 100 lb lower? No; GVWR commonly is, while trailer results can match or differ by 10 to 1,000 lb.

Does 4.10 identify the overall maximum? No; every 20,000-lb diesel row uses 3.73. Can payload and maximum trailer weight be added? No. Does the completion-weight note create a box-delete rating? No data row is printed.

What this guide establishes—and what it does not

It establishes RAM's complete 2021 maximum-trailer selector: 22 body/market groups, 62 engine/axle results, two paired powertrains, two axle ratios where available, three GVWR families and configuration-specific GCWR branches.

It does not establish that a particular used truck is unmodified, correctly represented, adequately hitched, within loaded axle or tire limits, mechanically sound or available for sale. Complete those checks with vehicle-specific records and measurements.

Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
