RAM's 2020 2500 chart publishes maximum trailer ratings from 10,290 to 19,680 lb, but the endpoints describe different trucks. The 19,680-lb maximum belongs to a 4x2 Regular Cab Tradesman with an 8-foot box, 6.7L Cummins, 68RFE six-speed, 3.73 axle and 27,000-lb GCWR; both the generic 10,000-lb-GVWR and Canada-only 9,900-lb-GVWR rows print that value. The 10,290-lb minimum belongs to a 4x4 Crew Cab with Power Wagon equipment, RamBox, 6.4L HEMI, 8HP75-LCV eight-speed, 4.10 axle, 8,565-lb GVWR and 18,000-lb GCWR. This guide preserves all 22 body and market groups, 62 published engine and axle ratings, Canada-only differences and source limits without assigning a catalogue result to an unseen Canadian VIN.
Direct answer: 10,290 to 19,680 lb across the 2020 chart
A 2020 RAM 2500 does not have one towing rating. RAM keeps drive, cab, box, engine, transmission, axle ratio, GVWR, base weight, GAWR and GCWR attached to each maximum-trailer cell. The highest and lowest chart results therefore answer different configuration questions.
The source highlights 19,680 lb as maximum capability for the Cummins Regular Cab long-box branch. An owner still has to match the actual truck, certification labels, original equipment, hitch and loaded weights. Power Wagon equipment creates the lower branch and cannot borrow a standard Crew Cab value.
| Endpoint | Exact 2020 configuration | GVWR / GCWR | Maximum trailer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chart maximum | 4x2 Regular Cab, 8-foot box, 6.7L Cummins, 68RFE, 3.73 | 10,000 or Canada-only 9,900 / 27,000 lb | 19,680 lb |
| Chart minimum | 4x4 Crew Cab, Power Wagon equipment, RamBox, 6.4L HEMI, 8HP75-LCV, 4.10 | 8,565 / 18,000 lb | 10,290 lb |
| Power Wagon standard box | 4x4 Crew Cab, Power Wagon equipment, 6-foot-4 box, 6.4L HEMI, 4.10 | 8,565 / 18,000 lb | 10,580 lb |
How to use RAM's selector without dropping a condition
Start with the model year and market row. RAM separately labels 9,900-lb-GVWR rows as Canada only; most generic companion rows use 10,000 lb. Then match 4x2 or 4x4, Regular, Crew or Mega Cab, the factory box or RamBox, engine and axle ratio. A blank powertrain position means the chart does not publish that combination.
The tables below reproduce maximum trailer ratings. RAM's original rows also include estimated payload, total/front/rear base weight, both GAWRs and GCWR. Return to the official row for those controls and do not choose a rating by engine badge or advertised maximum alone.
4x2 Regular Cab rows own the chart maximum
Both 4x2 Regular Cab long-box diesel rows publish 19,680 lb, even though the generic row uses 10,000-lb GVWR and the Canada-only row uses 9,900 lb. The gas cells do not match: the Canada-only row is 40 lb higher at both axle ratios. Those printed values remain independent rather than being forced into a shared row.
The chart pairs the 6.4L HEMI with the 8HP75-LCV eight-speed and either 3.73 or 4.10 axle. Its Cummins cell uses the 68RFE six-speed, 3.73 axle and 27,000-lb GCWR.
| Market / GVWR | Configuration | 6.4L / 3.73 | 6.4L / 4.10 | 6.7L / 3.73 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generic / 10,000 | 8-foot box | 15,040 | 17,540 | 19,680 |
| Canada only / 9,900 | 8-foot box | 15,080 | 17,580 | 19,680 |
4x2 Crew Cab rows separate short box, RamBox and long box
The short-box and long-box diesel cells reach 19,310 and 19,150 lb respectively. RamBox lowers the generic short-box diesel cell to 19,180 lb, while its Canada-only companion is 18,820 lb. The 360-lb market-row difference is specific to that body cell and is not a general Canadian adjustment.
Gas values match between market rows in all six published 4x2 Crew Cab groups. Payload does not: the source defines it as GVWR minus base weight, so the 9,900- and 10,000-lb GVWR rows retain their own payload columns even where maximum trailer weight matches.
| Market / GVWR | Configuration | 6.4L / 3.73 | 6.4L / 4.10 | 6.7L / 3.73 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generic / 10,000 | 6-foot-4 box | 14,690 | 17,190 | 19,310 |
| Generic / 10,000 | RamBox | 14,570 | 17,070 | 19,180 |
| Generic / 10,000 | 8-foot box | 14,550 | 17,050 | 19,150 |
| Canada only / 9,900 | 6-foot-4 box | 14,690 | 17,190 | 19,310 |
| Canada only / 9,900 | RamBox | 14,570 | 17,070 | 18,820 |
| Canada only / 9,900 | 8-foot box | 14,550 | 17,050 | 19,150 |
4x4 Mega Cab keeps two 1,000-lb Canada-only diesel differences
Mega Cab appears only as 4x4 in the reviewed chart. The generic standard-box diesel row is 15,690 lb; its Canada-only companion is 14,690 lb. RamBox changes the diesel pair to 14,550 and 13,550 lb. Both differences are exactly 1,000 lb in the printed source.
Gas rows match across the generic and Canada-only companions, and Mega Cab diesel uses 25,265-lb GCWR rather than 27,000 lb. Neither a universal Canadian deduction nor a universal RamBox deduction describes the table.
| Market / GVWR | Configuration | 6.4L / 3.73 | 6.4L / 4.10 | 6.7L / 3.73 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generic / 10,000 | 6-foot-4 box | 13,970 | 16,460 | 15,690 |
| Generic / 10,000 | RamBox | 13,820 | 16,320 | 14,550 |
| Canada only / 9,900 | 6-foot-4 box | 13,970 | 16,460 | 14,690 |
| Canada only / 9,900 | RamBox | 13,820 | 16,320 | 13,550 |
4x4 Regular Cab rows remain separate by market
The 4x4 Regular Cab diesel result is 19,330 lb in both rows. Gas differs by 10 lb: the generic 10,000-lb-GVWR row publishes 14,720 and 17,220 lb, while the Canada-only row publishes 14,710 and 17,210 lb.
These are complete factory-pickup rows with an 8-foot box. The 2020 chart does not add a box-delete companion, so none is reconstructed from another model year.
| Market / GVWR | Configuration | 6.4L / 3.73 | 6.4L / 4.10 | 6.7L / 3.73 |

| Generic / 10,000 | 8-foot box | 14,720 | 17,220 | 19,330 |
| Canada only / 9,900 | 8-foot box | 14,710 | 17,210 | 19,330 |
4x4 Crew Cab short-box, RamBox and Power Wagon rows
A generic short-box Crew Cab diesel row publishes 19,020 lb and the Canada-only row publishes 19,010 lb. RamBox changes that pair to 18,790 and 17,890 lb, a 900-lb difference. Gas values also differ by 10 to 30 lb between several market companions.
Power Wagon equipment is a separate gas-only family with 8,565-lb GVWR, 18,000-lb GCWR and a 4.10 axle. It publishes 10,580 lb with the standard box and 10,290 lb with RamBox. No 3.73 or Cummins cell is printed.

| Canada only / 9,900 | RamBox | 14,280 | 16,780 | 17,890 |
4x4 Crew Cab long-box rows use 25,525-lb diesel GCWR
The generic long-box diesel cell is 17,350 lb and its Canada-only companion is 17,170 lb. Both use 25,525-lb GCWR, below the 27,000-lb diesel GCWR printed for the short-box Crew Cab rows.
The Canada-only gas values are 10 lb higher than the generic cells here, the opposite direction from the 4x4 Regular Cab gas change. Preserve the row rather than applying a market-wide rule.
| Market / GVWR | Configuration | 6.4L / 3.73 | 6.4L / 4.10 | 6.7L / 3.73 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generic / 10,000 | 8-foot box | 14,190 | 16,690 | 17,350 |
| Canada only / 9,900 | 8-foot box | 14,200 | 16,700 | 17,170 |
Canada-only rows are independent source records
Most Canada-only rows use 9,900-lb GVWR while the generic companions use 10,000 lb. Trailer ratings sometimes match, sometimes move by 10 to 40 lb and sometimes move by 180, 360, 900 or 1,000 lb. The direction is not consistent.
Do not choose a generic row because it has the larger number or assume a 100-lb GVWR change determines trailer rating. Match original-market documentation, the certification label and equipment on the actual truck. This guide does not infer which row controls an unseen VIN.
Engine, transmission and axle choices stay attached
The 6.4L HEMI rows use the 8HP75-LCV eight-speed and usually publish both 3.73 and 4.10 axle choices. The 6.7L Cummins rows use the 68RFE six-speed and 3.73 axle. An ambiguous sales listing needs build evidence before either branch is selected.
For many gas rows, moving from 3.73 to 4.10 accompanies a GCWR change from 21,500 to 24,000 lb and a 2,500-lb change in maximum trailer rating. That is a printed pattern inside listed cells, not permission to calculate an absent body configuration.
GCWR is a selector and a loaded-combination control
RAM prints GCWR beside each maximum-trailer result. The maximum Cummins configuration uses 27,000 lb. Mega Cab diesel uses 25,265 lb, long-box 4x4 Crew Cab diesel uses 25,525 lb, standard gas uses 21,500 or 24,000 lb and Power Wagon equipment uses 18,000 lb.
A trailer rating does not authorize the loaded combination to exceed GCWR. Nor does it override GVWR, either GAWR, tire limits, receiver or bed-hitch limits. Weigh the loaded truck and trailer and compare every independent limit.
Payload and trailer rating are mutually exclusive estimates
RAM states that payload and maximum trailer weights are estimated, rounded to the nearest 10 lb and mutually exclusive. Its payload formula is GVWR minus base weight. The full displayed payload and full displayed trailer rating therefore cannot be treated as simultaneous allowances.
People, cargo, accessories, hitch hardware and trailer tongue or pin weight consume truck capacity. Use the tire-and-loading and certification labels, then verify loaded axle weights. A high trailer rating can coexist with insufficient payload or rear-axle margin for a particular trailer.
RAM's SAE J2807 assumptions define the catalogue result
The notes specify 300 lb of passenger weight and 100 lb of options weight. They use 10 percent tongue weight for conventional towing and 15 percent for fifth-wheel or gooseneck. Equipment allowances are 75 lb for a conventional hitch, 70 lb for gooseneck and 250 lb for fifth-wheel.
Those assumptions explain the calculation basis, not the load in every owner’s truck. If passengers, options, hardware or tongue weight differ, remaining margins differ. Trailer brakes and hitch ratings still require their own verification.
The 2020 chart publishes no box-delete rating rows
RAM's notes retain an 80-lb-per-foot box-off body-completion assumption, but the seven data pages contain no box-delete configuration row. That note does not create a rating where the 2020 table prints none.
The prior model year's box-delete rows are not copied forward. A completed service body or flat deck needs its final-stage certification, actual empty axle weights and applicable upfitter documents; this pickup chart does not supply them.
Power Wagon equipment is not a standard Crew Cab row
The two Power Wagon-equipment rows are limited to the 6.4L HEMI, 8HP75-LCV, 4.10 axle, 8,565-lb GVWR and 18,000-lb GCWR. Their 10,580- and 10,290-lb results are materially below the standard Crew Cab gas 4.10 cells.
Do not substitute a standard Crew Cab rating or invent a Cummins alternative. Confirm the build equipment and physical labels before selecting this family.
A vehicle-specific towing check has three layers
First, identify the exact catalogue row. Second, verify the individual truck's labels, original powertrain, axle, hitch and modifications. Third, compare loaded scale weights with GVWR, both GAWRs, GCWR, tire limits and hitch ratings.
Use loaded trailer weight rather than an advertised dry figure. Water, batteries, propane, cargo and dealer-installed equipment change the combination. A chart match is important evidence, but it is not the final loaded calculation.
A reproducible 2020 RAM 2500 worksheet
Record each selector before copying a trailer rating. If any field is unknown, keep the result unresolved instead of choosing the largest compatible-looking row.
| Step | Evidence to retain | Failure prevented |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2020 model year and original market | Wrong year or generic/Canada-only row |
| 2 | 4x2/4x4, Regular/Crew/Mega Cab | Wrong body family |
| 3 | 6-foot-4 box, RamBox or 8-foot box | Wrong base-weight branch |
| 4 | 6.4L/8HP75 or 6.7L/68RFE and axle | Wrong powertrain row |
| 5 | GVWR, GAWR, GCWR, tires and hitch | Headline-only conclusion |
| 6 | Loaded truck, axle and trailer scale weights | Catalogue estimate used as measured proof |
Keep 2020 separate from 2019 and later RAM HD charts
The 2020 range, group count and individual cells are not copied from 2019. The maximum falls from 19,780 to 19,680 lb, the minimum changes from 10,380 to 10,290 lb, and the reviewed 2020 chart removes the earlier box-delete data rows while changing numerous body values.
Later trucks can change engines, transmissions, outputs, body availability, GVWR, GCWR and trailer cells again. The general RAM 2500 towing page retains broad model intent; each year-specific sibling needs independent source evidence.
Source method and evidence limits
All eight pages of RAM's manufacturer-hosted document were retrieved through the official Body Builder record, hashed, rendered at 150 dpi and visually checked against layout-preserving extraction on 14 September 2026. The tables retain all 22 body/market groups and 62 printed engine/axle trailer ratings.
The chart does not certify a Canadian VIN, installed hitch, current payload, tongue or pin weight, axle margin, trailer brakes, legal operation, reliability, failure rate, inventory, sellers, dealer counts, prices, financing or offers.
Frequently asked questions
Can every 2020 RAM 2500 tow 19,680 lb? No. That number belongs to the exact Cummins Regular Cab 4x2 long-box row. Is the Canada-only table simply 100 lb lower? No. GVWR is commonly 100 lb lower, but trailer-rating changes vary from zero to 1,000 lb and sometimes move upward.
Does a 4.10 axle always identify the highest result? No. The chart maximum is a 3.73-axle Cummins row. Can payload and maximum trailer rating be added? No. RAM calls them mutually exclusive estimates. Are 2019 box-delete ratings valid here? No; the 2020 chart publishes no such data rows.
What this guide establishes—and what it does not
It establishes the complete maximum-trailer selector printed in RAM's eight-page 2020 RAM 2500 document: 22 body/market groups, 62 published engine/axle results, two engines with paired transmissions, two axle ratios where available, three GVWR families and configuration-specific GCWR branches.
It does not establish that a particular used truck is unmodified, correctly represented, equipped with an adequate hitch, within loaded axle or tire limits, mechanically sound or available for sale. Complete those checks with vehicle-specific records and measurements.
Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
