Towing capacity describes trailer weight under defined conditions; payload describes weight carried by the truck. Trailer tongue or pin weight is payload too.

Start with the payload label

The exact truck's certification label is more useful than a generic model maximum. Subtract passengers, cargo, accessories and hitch equipment from available payload.

Add trailer weight correctly

Conventional tongue weight and fifth-wheel or gooseneck pin weight press on the truck. Use loaded, travel-ready numbers rather than an empty trailer brochure weight.

Verify every limit

Payload, GVWR, axle ratings, tire capacity, hitch rating and gross combined limits all matter. The lowest applicable limit controls.
