RAM's official 2026 Heavy Duty sheets publish 43 populated RAM 2500 trailer ratings in the U.S. matrix and 42 in the Canadian matrix. Both span 10,530 to 20,000 lb, but they are not interchangeable copies: six gas trailer cells differ, three Canadian diesel trailer cells differ from their closest U.S. rows, several GCWR values change, and the U.S. sheet contains a separate 10,190-lb-GVWR short-box diesel row that the Canadian sheet does not publish. The tables below keep each market, grouped selector, 4x2/4x4 position and source blank intact. They are manufacturer reference ratings, not a VIN lookup or permission to tow the largest number shown.
Direct answer: the published range is 10,530 to 20,000 lb
The 10,530-lb minimum is the Power Wagon 4x4 Crew Cab short-box gas branch. The 20,000-lb maximum is a High-Output Cummins Crew Cab long-box 4x2 branch. Those endpoints describe different trucks; nothing between them is a continuously adjustable allowance.
Canada is the primary reference for a Canadian-market candidate, but even the Canadian sheet does not identify an unseen truck. Match the model year, market documentation, engine, transmission, axle, GVWR, cab, box and drivetrain, then verify the completed vehicle's labels and installed equipment.
| Reference | Configuration boundary | GVWR / GCWR (lb) | Trailer (lb) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum in both sheets | Power Wagon; gas; Crew Cab 6-foot-4; 4x4 | 8,565 / 18,000 | 10,530 |
| Canadian gas maximum | HEMI/4.10; Regular Cab 8-foot; 4x2 | 9,900 or 10,000 / 24,250 | 17,740 |
| U.S. gas maximum | HEMI/4.10; Regular Cab 8-foot; 4x2 | 9,900 / 24,250 | 17,740 |
| Diesel maximum in both | Cummins/3.42; Crew Cab 8-foot; 4x2 | 10,000/10,190/11,040* / 28,010 | 20,000 |
How to read slash pairs and grouped selectors
A trailer cell such as 15,540/15,220 is ordered 4x2/4x4. NA/15,150 therefore publishes only the 4x4 value; 19,960/NA publishes only the 4x2 value. NA is not zero. A blank position is also not a rating and must not be filled from the neighbouring RAM 3500 columns.
A slash in the GVWR column means something different. It groups the listed GVWR alternatives into one source row. The Canadian 9,900/10,000-lb Regular Cab diesel selector, for example, publishes one 19,900-lb 4x4 trailer value. Grouped GVWR labels do not multiply that printed value into extra ratings.
The two 2026 powertrain families
The gas rows use the 6.4L HEMI V8 with the 8HP75-LCV eight-speed automatic and either a 3.73 or 4.10 axle. The diesel rows use the 6.7L Cummins High-Output Turbo Diesel, a 3.42 axle and the eight-speed transmission described in the panel as TorqueFlite HD and in the matrix as ZF Powerline.
Engine output does not select a trailer rating. The same diesel family spans multiple cabs, boxes, drive systems, GVWR and GCWR branches.
| Source family | Published output | Transmission label | 2500 axle ratios |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.4L HEMI V8 | 405 hp; 429 lb-ft | 8HP75-LCV eight-speed | 3.73 or 4.10 |
| 6.7L Cummins High-Output | 430 hp; 1,075 lb-ft | TorqueFlite HD / ZF Powerline eight-speed | 3.42 |
Canada gas 3.73: all fourteen populated ratings
Each trailer pair is 4x2/4x4. The starred 11,040-lb row publishes only two RAM 2500 4x4 values; nearby populated cells to the right belong to RAM 3500 and are excluded.
| GVWR | GCWR | Regular Cab 8-foot | Crew Cab 6-foot-4 | Crew Cab 8-foot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9,900 | 22,050 | 15,540/15,220 | 15,210/14,910 | 15,070/14,730 |
| 10,000 | 22,050 | 15,540/15,240 | 15,220/14,920 | 15,080/14,720 |
| 11,040* | 22,050 | NA/15,150 | — | NA/14,580 |
Canada gas 4.10: all thirteen populated ratings
The Canadian 10,000-lb Regular Cab 4x2 cell is 17,740 lb, not the lower U.S. value. The starred row again retains the source's sole populated 2500 position.
| GVWR | GCWR | Regular Cab 8-foot | Crew Cab 6-foot-4 | Crew Cab 8-foot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9,900 | 24,250 | 17,740/17,420 | 17,410/17,110 | 17,270/16,930 |

| 11,040* | 24,250 | NA/17,350 | — | — |
U.S. gas 3.73: retain the six market-specific pairs
The U.S. sheet matches most Canadian positions but publishes 14,920 and 14,930 lb for the two short-box Crew Cab 4x4 cells. Those ten-pound differences are retained rather than averaged.
| GVWR | GCWR | Regular Cab 8-foot | Crew Cab 6-foot-4 | Crew Cab 8-foot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9,900 | 22,050 | 15,540/15,220 | 15,210/14,920 | 15,070/14,730 |
| 10,000 | 22,050 | 15,540/15,240 | 15,220/14,930 | 15,080/14,720 |
| 11,040*/11,040 | 22,050 | NA/15,150 | — | NA/14,580 |
U.S. gas 4.10: do not import Canadian cells
The U.S. 10,000-lb Regular Cab 4x2 value is 17,570 lb. Other market differences in these rows are only ten pounds, but they remain meaningful source facts rather than typographical noise.
| GVWR | GCWR | Regular Cab 8-foot | Crew Cab 6-foot-4 | Crew Cab 8-foot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9,900 | 24,250 | 17,740/17,420 | 17,410/17,120 | 17,270/16,930 |
| 10,000 | 24,250 | 17,570/17,440 | 17,420/17,130 | 17,280/16,920 |

Power Wagon stays outside the standard gas rows
Both sources identify Power Wagon in one 4x4 Crew Cab short-box cell with 4.10 axle, 8,565-lb GVWR and 18,000-lb GCWR. Its NA/10,530 pair cannot be replaced by a standard Crew Cab value.
The 11,040-starred rows apply only to vehicles produced with sales code Z2K, Z7G or Z3Y. Neither sheet supplies a package name here, so this guide preserves the codes without inventing an interpretation.
| Market | Model / body | Axle | GVWR / GCWR | Trailer 4x2/4x4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canada | Power Wagon / Crew Cab 6-foot-4 | 4.10 | 8,565 / 18,000 | NA/10,530 |
| U.S. | Power Wagon / Crew Cab 6-foot-4 | 4.10 | 8,565 / 18,000 | NA/10,530 |
Canada diesel Mega Cab and long-box 4x4 rows
Canada publishes three Mega Cab 4x4 values and three Crew Cab long-box 4x4 values. The 9,900-lb rows use Canadian GCWR figures of 23,210 and 25,440 lb respectively; those printed values are kept even though the comparable U.S. rows use higher GCWR figures.
| Body / drive | GVWR | GCWR | Trailer 4x2/4x4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mega Cab 6-foot-4 / 4x4 | 9,900 | 23,210 | NA/14,630 |
| Mega Cab 6-foot-4 / 4x4 | 10,000 | 24,290 | NA/15,380 |

| Crew Cab 8-foot / 4x4 | 11,040* | 26,580 | NA/18,230 |
Canada diesel Regular Cab and short-box Crew Cab
The Canadian sheet groups the Regular Cab 9,900/10,000-lb selector at 19,900 lb. Its short-box 4x2 row groups 9,900/10,000/11,040-starred GVWR. The 4x4 rows are independent and publish 18,700, 19,650 and 19,880 lb.
| Body / drive | GVWR selector | GCWR | Trailer 4x2/4x4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab 8-foot / 4x4 | 9,900/10,000 | 27,820 | NA/19,900 |

| Crew Cab 6-foot-4 / 4x4 | 11,040* | 28,110 | NA/19,880 |
Canada diesel long-box 4x2 reaches 20,000 lb
The 19,980-lb and 20,000-lb entries sit on the 4x2 side of the pair. A 4x4 long-box truck cannot inherit either figure from an empty source position.
| Body / drive | GVWR selector | GCWR | Trailer 4x2/4x4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crew Cab 8-foot / 4x2 | 9,900 | 28,010 | 19,980/NA |
| Crew Cab 8-foot / 4x2 | 10,000/10,190/11,040* | 28,010 | 20,000/NA |
U.S. diesel Mega Cab and long-box 4x4 rows
The U.S. Mega Cab and long-box 4x4 trailer values match Canada, but the 9,900-lb rows use 24,290- and 26,580-lb GCWR. Configuration matching requires retaining those market-specific combination ratings.
| Body / drive | GVWR | GCWR | Trailer 4x2/4x4 |

| Crew Cab 8-foot / 4x4 | 11,040* | 26,580 | NA/18,230 |
U.S. diesel Regular Cab and short-box Crew Cab
Unlike Canada, the U.S. Regular Cab selector includes 10,190 lb. The U.S. short-box section also publishes a separate 10,190-lb-GVWR 4x4 line at 19,890 lb, bringing the U.S. total to one more populated rating.
| Body / drive | GVWR selector | GCWR | Trailer 4x2/4x4 |

U.S. diesel long-box 4x2 rows
The U.S. 4x2 long-box values and 28,010-lb GCWR match the Canadian source. The U.S. grouped maximum row explicitly includes the 10,000-, 10,190- and starred 11,040-lb GVWR alternatives.
| Body / drive | GVWR selector | GCWR | Trailer 4x2/4x4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crew Cab 8-foot / 4x2 | 9,900 | 28,010 | 19,980/NA |
| Crew Cab 8-foot / 4x2 | 10,000/10,190/11,040* | 28,010 | 20,000/NA |
Market differences that must not be averaged
The table highlights trailer-rating differences, not every selector or GCWR difference. Use the matching source for the truck's documented market; the existence of a larger number in another sheet is not evidence that it applies.

Coverage count: 43 U.S. ratings and 42 Canadian ratings
Each market contains 28 gas ratings: 27 standard-cab/box drivetrain values plus Power Wagon. Canada contains 14 diesel ratings. The U.S. contains 15 because its separate 10,190-lb short-box 4x4 row adds one populated position.
Repeated numbers count when they occupy distinct source positions. Grouped GVWR alternatives do not multiply one printed trailer cell. RAM 3500 values, payload cells, source blanks and NA positions are not counted.
Hitch notes do not create a larger RAM 2500 rating
The U.S. footnote limits the RAM 2500 Class V receiver tongue weight to 2,000 lb and requires fifth-wheel or gooseneck equipment for a trailer over 20,000 lb. No populated RAM 2500 cell in this sheet exceeds 20,000 lb. The adjacent RAM 3500 threshold and values do not extend the 2500 matrix.
The Canadian sheet includes broader fifth-wheel and gooseneck notes, but they are not extra vehicle ratings. Confirm the installed hitch, attachment method, coupler and trailer limits independently.
Payload, axle limits and measured weight still govern
RAM states that payload and maximum-trailer ratings are mutually exclusive. Occupants, tools, accessories, bed cargo and transferred tongue or pin weight all load the truck. A high trailer cell does not guarantee enough remaining payload or rear-axle capacity.
GVWR limits the loaded truck, GAWR limits each axle and GCWR limits the combined truck and trailer. None substitutes for the others. Avoid counting transferred hitch load twice when interpreting scale tickets.
Source assumptions and evidence limits
Both one-page matrices identify their trailer capacities as SAE J2807 compliant. The U.S. footnotes state allowances of 300 lb for passengers, 100 lb for options, 75 lb for conventional equipment, 40 lb for gooseneck equipment and 250 lb for fifth-wheel equipment. Published values are rounded rather than measurements of a particular truck.
The two official PDFs were downloaded and visually checked on 14 September 2026 because text extraction can shift values between the RAM 2500 and RAM 3500 columns. The U.S. file SHA-256 begins e5544e59f340102e; the Canadian file begins 8d514f1f07d9cabd. The Canadian source's printed kg and lb fields were preserved as published; this guide does not silently recalculate or repair them.
A practical verification sequence
Photograph the VIN certification and loading labels, confirm the vehicle's model year and original market, and obtain factory build information for engine, transmission, axle and relevant sales codes. Match cab, box, drivetrain, GVWR and GCWR to one exact row before using its trailer cell for planning.
Then inspect hitch hardware and tire ratings, load the truck as it will travel, and account for occupants, fuel, cargo, accessories and any upfit. If the sales-code condition or market record remains unresolved, obtain documentation from RAM for that VIN rather than choosing the most favourable row.
FAQ: can every 2026 Cummins 2500 tow 20,000 lb?
No. The diesel cells range from 14,630 to 20,000 lb, and the maximum belongs to a Crew Cab long-box 4x2 row. Published 4x4 long-box values are lower, Mega Cab values are lower, and the market-specific short-box values differ. The engine name alone cannot select the row.
FAQ: does the 11,040-starred branch identify a package?
The footnote says the star applies to vehicles produced with sales code Z2K, Z7G or Z3Y. The reviewed sheets do not provide a package-name mapping beside that note. This page therefore preserves the exact codes and does not infer an equipment package or Canadian VIN eligibility.
Related years and honest limits
Use the separate 2025 and 2024 guides for those model years; their powertrain labels, selectors and hitch notes differ. General RAM 2500 specification pages can help explain terms but cannot fill a blank exact-year cell.
This guide does not establish reliability, failure rates, legal operating permission, actual curb weight, remaining payload, Canadian VIN status, inventory, sellers, dealer counts, prices, financing or offers. The marketplace remains a separate commercial destination, and no available truck is implied.
Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
