The conventional matrix has populated weight-carrying and weight-distributing cells from 12,300 to 20,000 lb. The ordinary 23,500-lb GCWR diesel row reaches 15,000 lb; only the 30,000-lb GCWR package-535 rows enter the 20,000-lb branch. Gas rows top out at 15,000 lb in the conventional table.
The bed-mounted matrix runs from 12,200 to 22,800 lb. Ford marks many high-capacity entries as gooseneck values, so 22,800 lb must not be advertised as a fifth-wheel rating. Truck payload, rear GAWR, GVWR, tires, trailer rating and the installed hitch can all set a lower usable limit.

Choose one of ten exact body columns first
Ford's 2021 table identifies ten pickup columns with decimal wheelbases. Regular Cab uses a 141.6-inch wheelbase and eight-foot box. SuperCab separates 148.0-inch short-box and 164.2-inch long-box configurations. Crew Cab separates 159.8-inch short-box and 176.0-inch long-box configurations. Each body is further divided by 4x2 or 4x4.
These decimals are useful source identifiers, not a fit guarantee. Select the cab, drivetrain, wheelbase and box together before moving down to engine, axle and GCWR. A badge, engine or bed length alone cannot identify the correct cell.

Conventional carrying and distributing ratings remain separate
The 2021 conventional matrix prints both maximum weight-carrying and maximum weight-distributing values. They sometimes match and sometimes do not. A Regular Cab 4x2 with the 6.2L, 3.73 axle and 19,500-lb GCWR is 13,000 lb carrying and 13,300 lb distributing; the comparable diesel high-capacity row is 14,000 and 15,200 lb.
Weight distribution cannot override the receiver label, vehicle ratings or trailer limits. Keep both source values visible, select the compatible hitch mode, and treat a source dash as unavailable rather than filling it from another row.

Diesel bed-mounted ratings preserve every package alternative
In the 23,500-lb GCWR diesel row, the standard values range from 12,900 to 16,400 lb, while marked optional 9,900-lb GVWR Package 68D alternatives extend the low end to 12,200 lb. The 30,000-lb GCWR rows require package 535 and reach 22,800 lb in a Regular Cab 4x2.
Gooseneck markers matter throughout the high-capacity rows. Even when the vehicle table displays more than 19,000 lb, Ford's separate fifth-wheel hitch limit is 19,000 lb. The table below retains the most decision-relevant exact branches rather than collapsing them into one maximum.

Gas bed-mounted rows do not share one ceiling
The 6.2L V8 uses 3.73 and 4.30 axle rows with 19,500- and 22,000-lb GCWR. Its populated fifth-wheel/gooseneck values span 12,200–15,800 lb. The 7.3L V8 uses a 3.55 row at 21,800-lb GCWR and 4.30 rows at 24,900 or 26,000 lb; its populated values span 14,400–19,500 lb.
The 24,900-lb GCWR row is a single Tremor Crew Cab 4x4 short-box cell. Other positions are dashes. The 26,000-lb row has optional 9,900-lb GVWR alternatives in three columns and gooseneck markers in selected higher cells.

Package 535 is part of the high-capacity diesel identity
Ford attaches F-250 High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package code 535 to the 30,000-lb GCWR diesel rows. Without verified package-535 equipment, do not use those rows merely because the truck has a 6.7L diesel or the same axle ratio. The lower 23,500-lb GCWR row remains a separate branch.
Confirm factory build evidence in addition to the truck's physical labels. An aftermarket hitch, suspension accessory or replacement tire does not retroactively create a factory package or raise the manufacturer's vehicle ratings.
The 20,000-lb conventional cells carry a tire footnote
Ford marks selected 20,000-lb conventional diesel cells with a requirement for 18-inch all-season or 20-inch all-terrain tires. That condition stays attached to those body columns; it is not a general statement that any tire of those nominal sizes makes every F-250 a 20,000-lb conventional tow vehicle.
Verify tire size, load rating, pressure and condition on the actual truck. The tire sidewall and certification label can impose a limit below a table maximum, especially once passengers, cargo, hitch hardware and tongue load are added.
Tremor and optional 9,900-lb GVWR branches are explicit
Tremor Off-Road Package 17Y creates specific marked results rather than a universal increase. The 7.3L, 4.30 axle, 24,900-lb GCWR bed-mounted row publishes only a 17,500-lb Crew Cab 4x4 short-box cell. In the diesel 3.55 high-capacity row, the same body position shows 19,100 lb normally and 18,100 lb with Tremor.
Package 68D is Ford's optional 9,900-lb GVWR branch in marked bed-mounted cells. Slash values must remain paired with their package condition. They are not a range and should never be averaged or applied to an unmarked column.
GCWR is a selector, not trailer capacity
Ford identifies these tables as calculated using SAE J2807. GCWR is the permitted combined weight of truck and trailer, not the trailer rating itself. The same 3.31 diesel axle appears in both 23,500- and 30,000-lb GCWR rows because package and configuration matter. Reading only the axle ratio can place the truck in the wrong row.
A practical combined-weight check subtracts the truck's actual loaded weight from GCWR, then compares the result with the published trailer limit and every lower component limit. It does not replace axle, tire, payload, receiver or trailer ratings.
Tongue and pin weight consume truck capacity
Ford's calculation notes use 10% conventional tongue weight and 15% fifth-wheel or gooseneck king-pin weight. At 20,000 lb, a 10% planning load is 2,000 lb. At 22,800 lb, a 15% planning load is 3,420 lb before hitch hardware, passengers and cargo are counted.
Those percentages are planning assumptions from the towing guide, not permission to exceed GVWR or rear GAWR. Use the trailer manufacturer's loading guidance and weigh the loaded combination by axle.
Tailgate height is a reference, not a clearance guarantee
Ford publishes a maximum tailgate height of 57.8–60.0 inches for the reviewed F-250 4x4 configurations and 59.7–61.3 inches for Tremor. The note defines this as ground to the top of the closed tailgate lip at base curb weight and says it varies with configuration, options and tires.
Do not treat those figures as fifth-wheel rail clearance or bed-to-trailer clearance. Measure the actual loaded truck and trailer on level ground, include suspension movement and follow the hitch and trailer manufacturers' setup instructions.
Short-box turning clearance remains a physical check
A short-box column can have a strong published trailer rating and still require careful cab-to-trailer clearance analysis. Trailer nose shape, pin-box geometry, hitch position, turning angle and terrain determine whether contact can occur; the Ford capacity table does not certify turning clearance.
Use the exact hitch manufacturer's fit instructions and complete a controlled clearance check before travel. A sliding hitch or specialized pin box must be independently approved for the truck, hitch and trailer combination.
The certification and payload labels control the individual truck
The source table is a configuration selector, not a substitute for the door-jamb certification label, tire label or factory build record. Confirm the truck's GVWR, front and rear GAWR, tire ratings, engine, axle, cab, box, drivetrain and factory packages before choosing a row.
Then weigh the truck as used, with occupants, cargo, fuel and installed hitch equipment. A published maximum loaded trailer weight cannot establish remaining payload or actual rear-axle margin without those vehicle-specific inputs.
Canadian trucks require exact-vehicle verification
The reviewed 2021 towing guide is U.S.-market evidence. Ford Canada's current towing resources support the same exact-vehicle process, but they do not backfill a historical Canadian matrix or certify an unseen Canadian VIN. Market equipment, labels and registration details must be checked on the candidate truck.
Do not infer Canadian availability from a U.S. source row. If the build record or labels do not establish the required package or rating, use the lower verified limit or obtain documentation from Ford for that exact vehicle.
A defensible 2021 lookup follows a fixed sequence
First identify conventional, fifth-wheel or gooseneck use. Next record engine, axle ratio and GCWR; then match cab, 4x2 or 4x4, decimal wheelbase and box. Apply package 535, Tremor 17Y, package 68D, tire and gooseneck footnotes only where printed.
Finally compare the source cell with the truck labels, installed hitch, trailer rating and measured axle weights. The lowest verified constraint is the working limit. Save the source page and configuration notes with the load worksheet so the result can be audited later.
