Ford F-250 towing capacity is not one number. In Ford's U.S. 2026 selector, diesel conventional ratings span 15,500–22,000 lb across the published configurations, while diesel fifth-wheel/gooseneck entries span 11,600–23,000 lb; the lower in-bed figure is tied to a fixed-9,900-lb-GVWR footnote, and the upper figures require the F-250 High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package. The exact limit depends on engine, axle ratio, cab, wheelbase, box, drivetrain, GVWR/package status, payload and hitch style. This page transcribes bounded 2025–2026 source ranges and selected rows, then shows how to verify the actual Canadian truck rather than assigning it the headline maximum. Sources were checked on 9 September 2026.

Exact answer for the current published guide

The 2026 Ford guide lists a maximum 22,000-lb conventional trailer rating for a properly equipped F-250 and a maximum 23,000-lb gooseneck rating for a properly equipped high-output 6.7L diesel F-250. Those are selector maxima, not the capacity of every F-250. The 23,000-lb entry appears in the Regular Cab 4x2, 8-foot-box row with the 3.31 axle and F-250 High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package.

The same guide shows materially lower numbers elsewhere. A standard 6.7L diesel with 3.31 axle and 23,500-lb GCWR ranges from 15,500 to 16,600 lb for conventional towing across listed cab/drivetrain combinations. In the in-bed table, special fixed-9,900-lb-GVWR entries fall as low as 11,600 lb. Identify the actual row before using a number.

2026 diesel range summary

These are the extrema visible in Ford's published 2026 selector, not a promise that every configuration between them exists or that every truck can carry the required tongue or pin load. The chart also identifies 3.55E and 3.73E as electronic-locking axle entries and marks Tremor and fixed-GVWR variants separately.

Selected 2026 conventional diesel configurations

The compact table intentionally selects comparable columns from Ford's larger matrix. It does not replace the original chart: 2026 adds SuperCab short-box columns, and other axle, Tremor and fixed-GVWR rows need their own exact cells. Ford says the maximum assumptions include required equipment and a 150-lb driver and passenger, with additional options, people, cargo and hitch weight reducing the available margin.

Selected 2026 fifth-wheel and gooseneck maxima

Do not swap the paired fifth-wheel and gooseneck values. Bed length, cab, drivetrain and hitch geometry matter independently of engine output. Ford's tailgate-clearance table gives the 2026 F-250 SRW 4x4 a 57.9–60.0-inch range at base curb weight and warns that configuration, options and tire size change the height.

What changed between the 2025 and 2026 tables?

The reviewed 2025 and 2026 F-250 guides both publish 22,000 lb as the top diesel conventional value and 23,000 lb as the top diesel gooseneck value. That does not make their matrices interchangeable. The 2026 chart adds 148.0-inch-wheelbase SuperCab short-box columns, retains separate package, Tremor and fixed-GVWR footnotes, and carries a 24 November 2025 revision date. The compact 2025 guide carries a 10 January 2025 revision date.

For a 2025 truck, use the 2025 table. Its high-output 6.7L, package-535 Regular Cab 4x2 row lists 22,300 lb fifth-wheel and 23,000 lb gooseneck. Its conventional diesel table reaches 22,000 lb in specific package-535 cells. A matching headline maximum is not evidence that a 2025 row can be transferred to a 2026 body/wheelbase combination.

Cab, box, drivetrain and axle notes

Start with model year and F-250 SRW identity, then record engine version, axle ratio/code, cab, wheelbase, box length and 4x2/4x4. Confirm package 535 from the actual vehicle record where a high-capacity row is being used. Do not infer it from a hitch in the bed or a seller's description.

Longer or heavier configurations do not move in one simple direction. They change curb weight, available payload, wheelbase and the applicable chart cell. A diesel's torque cannot override a lower GCWR, GVWR, rear GAWR, tire limit, hitch rating or vehicle-specific payload value.

Towing, payload, GVWR and GCWR are separate limits

The governing capacity is the first applicable limit reached. Ford says conventional tongue load should be 10% and fifth-wheel/gooseneck pin load 15% of loaded trailer weight in these guides. Those planning percentages still must fit the actual payload, rear-axle, tire, wheel and hitch limits.

Do not backfill an older F-250 from a newer chart

Ford retains model-year towing guides back to 1996. Use the document for the truck's model year, then match its actual engine, axle, cab, box, drivetrain and equipment. The reviewed 2023 and 2024 publications have their own F-250 matrices and notes; a current 2026 maximum is not a retrospective rating for an older Super Duty.

This page therefore does not build a single 1999–2026 range or infer missing cells. Historical capacity research needs the archived guide, readable labels and—where the vehicle has been modified or documentation conflicts—qualified confirmation of the completed configuration. Preserve the publication's revision date with any extracted figure.

A Canadian F-250 needs Canadian vehicle verification

The numeric tables reviewed here are Ford's U.S. publications. For a Canadian truck, confirm the exact Canadian certification and carrying-capacity labels, installed equipment, hitch documentation and current model-year owner information. Do not translate a U.S. selector cell into Canadian compliance, registration or licensing advice.

Ford's current towing centre says its guide is not VIN-specific and directs owners to a VIN-based towing calculator or the applicable guide. No VIN was supplied, so this page does not claim an individual Canadian rating. If the VIN result, door labels and generic chart disagree, stop and resolve the identity/configuration question before towing.

Use measured loaded weights

Load the truck and trailer as they will travel, including people, tools, fluids, hitch hardware and bed cargo. Obtain axle and combined weights at an appropriate scale. Compare the measured results with GVWR, front and rear GAWR, GCWR, tire/wheel limits, hitch limits and the correct maximum-loaded-trailer entry.

Do not subtract an empty-truck brochure weight from GCWR and call the result a final tow rating. The selector already has defined assumptions, while a used or upfitted truck may carry accessories the generic base configuration did not. Recheck after material equipment or load changes.

Ford F-250 towing-capacity questions

What is the maximum 2026 F-250 conventional towing capacity? Ford's published selector reaches 22,000 lb for specific properly equipped diesel configurations.

What is the maximum 2026 gooseneck rating? The highest reviewed F-250 cell is 23,000 lb for a high-output diesel Regular Cab 4x2 with 8-foot box, 3.31 axle and package 535.

Does every diesel F-250 tow at least 20,000 lb? No. The same 2026 conventional table includes 15,500–16,600-lb standard-diesel entries without the high-capacity row.

Are fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings the same? No. Ford publishes paired values, and the applicable hitch type must be read from the correct column.

Does payload matter if trailer weight is below the chart maximum? Yes. Occupants, cargo, accessories and tongue/pin load cannot push the truck over payload, GVWR, rear GAWR, tire, wheel or hitch limits.

Can this page confirm my Canadian truck? No. Use the exact labels, installed equipment, model-year documentation and available VIN-based data for the individual vehicle.

Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
