Ford's revised 2020 F-250 SRW selector publishes maximum loaded trailer weights from 12,300 to 20,000 lb for conventional towing and from 12,200 to 22,800 lb for fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing across populated 6.2L gas, 7.3L gas and 6.7L diesel rows. Those endpoints are not universal F-250 ratings. The 20,000-lb conventional result appears only in selected diesel body columns with 30,000-lb GCWR, the F-250 High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package and specified tires. The 22,800-lb bed-mounted endpoint is explicitly a gooseneck rating; Ford limits fifth-wheel use of gooseneck-marked rows to the 19,000-lb fifth-wheel hitch rating. Match the complete source row, then confirm the truck's labels, hitch and loaded axle weights.
Direct answer: the reviewed 2020 range is 12,200–22,800 lb
The conventional matrix spans 12,300–20,000 lb across its populated weight-carrying and weight-distributing cells. The 6.2L and 7.3L gas rows reach 15,000 lb; selected 6.7L diesel high-capacity rows reach 20,000 lb. A family maximum cannot replace the cab, drive, wheelbase, box, axle, GCWR, tire and package selectors.
The fifth-wheel/gooseneck matrix spans 12,200–22,800 lb. Ford marks the larger values as gooseneck ratings and limits fifth-wheel towing in those rows to a 19,000-lb hitch rating. The trailer, installed hitch, truck payload, GVWR, rear GAWR and tires can impose a lower limit.
| Reviewed 2020 category | Published span | Top-cell boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional — all populated cells | 12,300–20,000 lb | 20,000 lb is confined to selected diesel high-capacity columns |
| Conventional — 6.7L diesel cells | 14,000–20,000 lb | 30,000-lb GCWR, package and tire conditions remain attached |
| Fifth-wheel/gooseneck — all populated cells | 12,200–22,800 lb | 22,800 lb is a Regular Cab 4x2 diesel gooseneck rating |
| Fifth-wheel use of gooseneck-marked cells | 19,000-lb hitch cap | Do not describe 22,800 lb as fifth-wheel capacity |
Ten body columns still control the lookup
Ford divides the F-250 SRW pickup into ten cab, drive, wheelbase and box columns. Regular Cab uses a 142-inch wheelbase and eight-foot box. SuperCab uses 148-inch short-box and 164-inch long-box branches; Crew Cab uses 160-inch short-box and 176-inch long-box branches. Each cab group is separated into 4x2 and 4x4.
Select the full body column before reading an engine row. A diesel, a 4x4 badge or a long box by itself does not identify a rating, and no value should be moved into a source dash or an unmatched column.
| Cab | 4x2 branches | 4x4 branches |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab | 142-in wheelbase / 8-ft box | 142-in wheelbase / 8-ft box |
| SuperCab | 148-in / 6.75-ft; 164-in / 8-ft | 148-in / 6.75-ft; 164-in / 8-ft |
| Crew Cab | 160-in / 6.75-ft; 176-in / 8-ft | 160-in / 6.75-ft; 176-in / 8-ft |
Conventional towing keeps carrying and distributing values separate
Unlike Ford's reviewed 2019 selector, the 2020 conventional table prints both maximum weight-carrying and maximum weight-distributing values. For the 6.2L 3.73 Regular Cab 4x2 row, those values are 13,000 and 13,300 lb. For the 6.7L 3.31 high-capacity Regular Cab 4x2 row, they are 14,000 and 15,200 lb.
Several columns show equal values, but that does not erase the receiver modes. Use the installed receiver label and compatible hitch equipment. Weight distribution cannot raise the vehicle, axle, tire or trailer rating.
| Selected conventional row | GCWR | Selected body column | Carrying / distributing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.2L / 3.73 | 19,500 lb | Regular Cab 4x2 | 13,000 / 13,300 lb |
| 6.2L / 4.30 | 22,000 lb | Regular Cab 4x4 | 14,000 / 15,000 lb |
| 6.7L / 3.31 | 23,500 lb | Regular Cab 4x2 | 14,000 / 15,000 lb |
| 6.7L / 3.31 + high-capacity package | 30,000 lb | Regular Cab 4x2 | 14,000 / 15,200 lb |
| 6.7L / 3.31 + high-capacity package | 30,000 lb | SuperCab 4x4 long box | 20,000 / 20,000 lb; specified tires |
| 7.3L / 3.55 | 21,800 lb | Crew Cab 4x4 long box | 14,500 / 14,500 lb |
| 7.3L / 4.30 | 24,900 lb | Crew Cab 4x4 short box | 15,000 / 15,000 lb; Tremor |
| 7.3L / 4.30 | 26,000 lb | Crew Cab 4x4 long box | 15,000 / 15,000 lb |
The diesel bed-mounted matrix reaches 22,800 lb only as gooseneck
The 23,500-lb GCWR diesel row ranges from 12,200 to 16,400 lb once the optional 9,900-lb GVWR branches are preserved. The 30,000-lb GCWR high-capacity rows rise as high as 22,800 lb for Regular Cab 4x2 and 22,000 lb for a short-box SuperCab 4x2.
Ford's gooseneck footnote applies to the marked high values. Fifth-wheel towing is limited to the 19,000-lb fifth-wheel hitch rating even where the vehicle column prints 19,100, 20,100, 21,700, 22,000 or 22,800 lb as a gooseneck result.
| Diesel row | Selected 2020 configuration | Maximum loaded trailer weight |

| 3.31 or 3.55 / 30,000 GCWR | SuperCab 4x2 short / long | 22,000 / 21,900 lb gooseneck |
| 3.31 or 3.55 / 30,000 GCWR | SuperCab 4x4 short / long | 20,100 / 19,100 lb gooseneck |
| 3.31 or 3.55 / 30,000 GCWR | Crew Cab 4x2 short / long | 21,700 / 20,400 lb gooseneck |
| 3.55 / 30,000 GCWR | Crew Cab 4x4 short / long | 19,100 / 17,300 lb; short box 18,100 with Tremor |
The two gas engines have different source rows
The 6.2L V8 uses 3.73 and 4.30 axle rows with 19,500- and 22,000-lb GCWR. Its bed-mounted values span 12,200–15,800 lb. The 7.3L V8 uses a 3.55 row at 21,800-lb GCWR plus 4.30 rows at 24,900 and 26,000 lb; its bed-mounted values span 14,400–19,500 lb across populated cells.
The 24,900-lb 7.3L row is not a general alternative: it contains a single 17,500-lb Crew Cab 4x4 short-box value and is marked for the Tremor Off-Road Package. Source dashes remain unavailable cells.
| Gas bed-mounted row | Published span or populated branch | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| 6.2L / 3.73 / 19,500 GCWR | 12,200–13,300 lb | All ten body columns populated |
| 6.2L / 4.30 / 22,000 GCWR | 14,700–15,800 lb | All ten body columns populated |
| 7.3L / 3.55 / 21,800 GCWR | 14,400–15,400 lb | All ten body columns populated |
| 7.3L / 4.30 / 24,900 GCWR | 17,500 lb | Tremor Crew Cab 4x4 short box only; other cells are dashes |
| 7.3L / 4.30 / 26,000 GCWR | 16,300–19,500 lb | Gooseneck markers and 9,900-lb GVWR alternatives remain attached |
High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package 535 is a source condition
Ford marks the 30,000-lb diesel GCWR rows with the F-250 High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package, code 535. That package condition belongs to the source row. It cannot be inferred from a hitch ball, bed rails, trailer connector, seller description or aftermarket suspension part.
Confirm the factory build record and physical equipment before using a high-capacity result. If the package cannot be verified, keep the 30,000-lb row unresolved rather than assigning its larger values by appearance.
Tire footnotes affect selected 20,000-lb conventional cells
Ford conditions selected 20,000-lb conventional diesel cells on 18-inch all-season or 20-inch all-terrain tires. The requirement is not a suggestion to install a similarly sized tire and claim the row; original configuration, tire service description, wheel and every lower rating still matter.
Record the tire size and load information from the actual truck. Replacement tires must satisfy the vehicle's requirements, but tire replacement does not create a higher factory towing rating.
Tremor and 9,900-lb GVWR alternatives remain separate
The 7.3L 24,900-lb GCWR row is marked for the Tremor Off-Road Package, code 17Y. The bed-mounted table also prints Tremor and optional 9,900-lb GVWR Package 68D alternatives inside particular cells. A slash therefore represents a real source branch, not an invitation to choose the larger number.
Verify the package and certification label before selecting either side of a slash. The lower-GVWR alternative can reduce the displayed bed-mounted trailer value even when engine, axle, cab and box appear unchanged.
Tongue and king-pin load consume truck capacity
Ford's notes use 10% of loaded trailer weight for conventional tongue load and 15% for fifth-wheel or gooseneck king-pin load. Those transferred loads ride on the truck with passengers, cargo, accessories and hitch hardware.
A trailer can fall below the table value while the truck exceeds payload, GVWR, rear GAWR or tire capacity. Weigh the working combination by axle and use the lowest applicable limit.
GCWR is a selector, not trailer capacity
GCWR caps the loaded truck and trailer combination. It identifies the proper Ford row but does not itself state how much trailer can be attached, and it should not be subtracted from an unrelated catalogue curb weight.
After selecting the source row, verify actual loaded truck weight, axle loads, the trailer rating and installed hitch. The completed vehicle's labels and the lowest component rating remain controlling checks.
Bed-mounted ratings do not prove turning clearance
The matrix includes 6.75-foot short-box SuperCab and Crew Cab configurations. A published fifth-wheel or gooseneck weight does not prove cab-to-trailer clearance through a turn or guarantee compatibility with every pin box, coupler or hitch location.
Measure the actual combination and follow the hitch and trailer manufacturers' installation limits. Approved sliding equipment can address geometry but cannot increase a Ford rating.
Canadian trucks require exact-vehicle evidence
The reviewed Ford guide is U.S.-market evidence. It establishes Ford's 2020 selector structure but does not certify that an unseen Canadian VIN has the same packages, labels, equipment availability or registration-specific limits.
For a Canadian truck, collect the VIN, certification and tire labels, axle code, original build information, hitch label and alteration history. Resolve any conflict with Canadian documentation before assigning a towing row.
A practical 2020 row-identification workflow
Confirm that the vehicle is a 2020 F-250 SRW pickup. Record the 6.2L, 7.3L or 6.7L engine, axle ratio, cab, 4x2 or 4x4 drive, wheelbase and box. Identify conventional, fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitching, then verify GCWR, package, tire and GVWR alternatives.
Keep the rating unresolved when any selector is unknown. Photograph the vehicle, tire and hitch labels, verify the build record and weigh the loaded combination before relying on the number for a purchase or dispatch decision.
Do not transfer the 2019 table into 2020
The 2020 selector adds the 7.3L gas engine, a 30,000-lb diesel GCWR branch, a 20,000-lb conventional endpoint and a 22,800-lb gooseneck endpoint. It also restores separate carrying and distributing conventional columns. Those differences make the prior-year matrix unsuitable as a substitute.
Keep every model year on its own source. The 2018 and 2019 pages are comparison references only and do not supply a missing 2020 value.
Diesel versus gas is a complete-truck decision
Selected diesel rows reach the largest 2020 trailer figures, while the new 7.3L gas rows create distinct alternatives. Engine choice also changes truck mass, service requirements, acquisition cost and usable carrying capacity. Peak torque or one towing maximum does not identify the best working truck.
Compare exact configurations that can complete the same job with identical passengers, cargo, hitch and trailer assumptions. Keep reliability, service history and current mechanical condition separate from the towing matrix.
Source revisions and evidence limits
All configuration figures come from Ford's 44-page 2020 RV & Trailer Towing Guide. PDF pages 22 and 23 were rendered and visually reviewed on 13 September 2026. The conventional page is revised 3 February 2020; the fifth-wheel/gooseneck page is revised 27 February 2020. Both state that the tables use the SAE J2807 method.
No number transfers to another year, F-350, F-450, chassis cab, altered truck or unmatched hitch. The sources do not establish reliability, failure rates, Canadian VIN status, inventory, sellers, dealer counts, prices, financing or offers.
2020 F-250 towing questions and conclusion
What is the maximum 2020 Ford F-250 towing capacity? The reviewed maximum is 20,000 lb conventional or 22,800 lb gooseneck in different diesel configurations. Is fifth-wheel capacity also 22,800 lb? No. Ford limits fifth-wheel towing in the gooseneck-marked rows to the 19,000-lb fifth-wheel hitch rating.
Does every 2020 diesel tow 20,000 lb? No. Diesel conventional cells begin at 14,000 lb and require the full source row. The defensible answer comes from the exact configuration, factory package, tire and GVWR branches, physical labels, installed hitch and loaded weights.
