The highest value in GMC's U.S. 2026 Sierra 2500 HD chart is 22,390 lb for a 6.6L Duramax Regular Cab, long-bed, 2WD configuration with a 30,000-lb GCWR, Max Trailering Package and fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. The diesel conventional maximum is 20,000 lb, while GMC Canada's current 2500 HD Crew Cab claim is 21,870 lb. Those are different selectors, not interchangeable badge-level ratings. The correct answer requires the exact market, cab, bed, drive, engine, GCWR row, package, wheels, hitch and loaded truck. Sources were checked on 9 September 2026.

Exact 2026 answer

GMC's U.S. matrix places the overall 2500 HD high cell at 22,390 lb. It is an in-bed-hitch rating for the diesel Regular Cab, long bed and 2WD column at 30,000-lb GCWR; the chart's footnote requires the Max Trailering Package. A 4WD Regular Cab in the same GCWR row is 22,000 lb.

GMC Canada separately publishes up to 21,870 lb for the 2500 HD Crew Cab. That number appears in the U.S. chart's 30,300-lb-GCWR diesel Crew Cab long-bed 2WD cell. It should not be stretched to Regular Cab, another market, another hitch or every Canadian VIN.

Diesel conventional matrix

The table is a selected transcription of GMC's ten-column matrix. It keeps GCWR, body column and footnotes attached to the numbers; it is not a VIN decoder. The chart also gives a separate 18,400-lb AT4X AEV conventional cell and a 20,000-lb Crew long-bed 2WD value at 30,300-lb GCWR.

Several additional 4WD trim-specific cells carry AT4, AT4X, Denali or Denali Ultimate footnotes. Do not substitute a nearby generic cell when the truck is one of those trims. Retain the exact footnote, hitch type and column with the chosen number.

Gas and diesel are different selectors

The 6.6L gas V8 is not a fallback diesel row. In GMC's conventional matrix it reaches 16,000 lb in selected 26,000-lb-GCWR configurations with the required 18- or 20-inch wheels; its 24,500-lb-GCWR row is 14,500 lb across the listed columns.

For fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing, the reviewed gas chart reaches 18,700 lb in the 26,000-lb-GCWR Regular Cab long-bed 2WD column. Cab, bed and drive still change the value. Verify the engine from build records and the truck rather than assuming from trim or appearance.

Conventional and in-bed ratings do not cross over

The 20,000-lb diesel conventional cells and the 22,390-lb fifth-wheel/gooseneck cell use different coupling systems. A receiver rating cannot be promoted to an in-bed value, and an in-bed headline does not authorize that load through the receiver.

Inspect the installed receiver or bed hitch, mounting, coupler, ball or kingpin, clearances, trailer brakes, wiring and every component label. The lowest truck, hitch, tire, wheel, trailer or legal limit controls even when the manufacturer chart publishes a higher row.

GCWR is a loaded-combination ceiling

GMC defines GCWR as the allowed weight of the properly equipped vehicle-and-trailer combination, including driver, passengers, fuel, options and cargo in both. It is not trailer capacity by itself. Subtracting an assumed curb weight from GCWR is not a safe way to invent a rating that GMC did not publish.

Payload and rear-axle capacity can govern before the trailer maximum, especially with fifth-wheel or gooseneck pin load. Compare actual loaded axle and truck weights with the certification labels, GVWR, both GAWRs, tire/wheel ratings and the exact selected trailer row.

Cab, bed, drive, wheel and package checks

The 2026 matrix separates Crew Cab standard and long beds, Double Cab standard and long beds, and Regular Cab long beds, then splits 2WD and 4WD. GMC Canada confirms those three cab families and the available 6-foot-9-inch or 8-foot beds where applicable.

Footnotes matter. The 27,500-lb-GCWR rows require available 18- or 20-inch wheels; the highest rows require the Max Trailering Package; some 4WD cells are trim-specific. Copy the full row and footnote into the purchase worksheet instead of retaining only a five-digit maximum.

Canadian verification boundary

The detailed numeric matrices summarized here are GMC U.S. 2026 charts. The Canadian page provides current Canadian cab, bed, powertrain and Crew Cab maximum context, but it does not establish any individual truck's installed equipment or allowable load.

For a Canadian truck, obtain the VIN/build record, Canadian owner literature, certification and carrying-capacity labels, cab, bed, drive, engine, GCWR/package evidence, wheel and tire ratings, hitch documentation and loaded scale tickets. No Canadian VIN, build sheet, label photograph or measured weight was supplied for this page.

A loaded-combination worksheet

The towing tool can organize arithmetic but cannot recover a missing build code, package, label or hitch rating. Pause at the headline claim until the exact truck and loaded combination are documented.

Used Sierra 2500HD towing evidence to inspect

Photograph every rating label and hitch label. Inspect the frame, receiver or bed-hitch mounting, bed structure, rear suspension, steering, brakes, cooling system, driveline, tires, wheels, trailer wiring and brake-controller operation. Record corrosion, collision repair, overload evidence and signs of repeated heavy in-bed towing.

Obtain service history and confirm the correct 6.6L engine and transmission for the model year. The current 2026 Duramax is rated by GMC at 470 hp and 975 lb-ft; do not import those figures or the 2026 towing matrix into an earlier truck. Aftermarket springs, tires, wheels or hitches do not rewrite factory GVWR, GAWR or GCWR.

Sierra 2500HD towing-capacity questions

What is the highest reviewed 2026 rating? 22,390 lb for the diesel Regular Cab, long-bed, 2WD, 30,000-lb-GCWR Max Trailering Package row with fifth-wheel or gooseneck coupling.

What is the diesel conventional maximum? 20,000 lb in identified 30,000- or 30,300-lb-GCWR Crew Cab configurations; the exact cab, bed, drive and package still matter.

What does GMC Canada publish for a 2500 HD Crew Cab? Up to 21,870 lb, which is not the same selector as the U.S. Regular Cab 22,390-lb high cell.

Does every Duramax 2500 HD tow more than 20,000 lb? No. The reviewed base diesel in-bed rows include values from 17,600 to 18,500 lb before higher-GCWR rows and trim-specific variants.

Can the fifth-wheel maximum be used for a receiver trailer? No. Conventional and fifth-wheel/gooseneck ratings are separate matrices.

Can this page rate a Canadian VIN? No. The actual build record, Canadian labels, installed hitch and measured loads control.

Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
