GMC Sierra 1500 towing capacity is not one badge-level number. GMC's 2026 U.S. chart reaches 13,300 lb for conventional towing only in an identified Duramax 3.0L Double Cab, standard-bed, 2WD row with 19,000-lb GCWR, the Max Trailering Package and 20-inch wheels. The current Canadian Sierra page publishes the same 6,032-kg (13,300-lb) maximum diesel headline, but an individual Canadian truck still needs its own configuration and label verification. Sources were checked on 9 September 2026.

Exact 2026 answer

The highest conventional trailer cell in GMC's 2026 Sierra 1500 chart is 13,300 lb. It belongs to the Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel Double Cab with a standard bed and 2WD, using the 19,000-lb-GCWR row, available Max Trailering Package and 20-inch wheels.

That result is not the rating of every diesel Sierra. The same 19,000-lb-GCWR row publishes 13,100 lb for a 2WD Crew Cab short bed, 12,800 lb for a 4WD Crew Cab short bed, 12,400 lb for a 4WD Crew Cab standard bed and 13,000 lb for a 4WD Double Cab standard bed. Cab, bed, drive, package and wheel condition stay attached to the figure.

These are selected manufacturer rows, not a VIN calculator. The chart also publishes 17,800-lb-GCWR Max Trailering rows with 18-inch wheels and separate AT4/AT4X or tire conditions. Use the exact line rather than interpolating between them.

Fifth-wheel and gooseneck are separate columns

The 2026 fifth-wheel/gooseneck table does not repeat the conventional maximum. In the selected Duramax Max Trailering rows, GMC publishes 8,000 lb for a 2WD Crew Cab short bed, 7,200 lb for a 4WD Crew Cab short bed, 6,800 lb for a 4WD Crew Cab standard bed, 8,900 lb for a 2WD Double Cab standard bed and 8,800 lb for a 4WD Double Cab standard bed.

The 8,900-lb high cell is therefore a different coupling result from the 13,300-lb conventional high cell. Verify installed hitch type, rail or ball system, mounting instructions, bed clearance and actual pin weight instead of assuming an in-bed hitch raises the truck's trailer rating.

Gas engines do not share the diesel selector

The 2026 chart lists TurboMax, 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8 and 3.0L Duramax families separately. Its highest gas conventional cell is 13,100 lb in a selected 6.2L V8, 19,100-lb-GCWR, Max Trailering row with 20-inch wheels; other 6.2L rows range materially lower. The 5.3L table also separates 15,000- and 16,800-lb-GCWR configurations.

Do not transfer the 13,300-lb diesel row to a gasoline truck, or select a row from engine displacement alone. Confirm engine, transmission, cab, bed, drive, package and wheels from the build evidence.

Why GCWR and payload both matter

GMC defines GCWR as the maximum loaded weight of truck and trailer combined. Passenger, cargo, option and accessory weight can reduce what the specific vehicle can trailer. The door-label payload, GVWR, front and rear GAWR, tires and wheels remain separate limits even when the arithmetic stays below GCWR.

Add occupants, bed cargo, permanent accessories and receiver or in-bed hardware to loaded tongue or pin weight. A richly equipped half-ton can run out of payload or rear-axle margin before reaching a brochure trailer number.

Read the package and wheel footnotes

GMC's high Duramax rows require the available Max Trailering Package. The 17,800-lb-GCWR rows are tied to 18-inch wheels, while the 19,000-lb-GCWR rows are tied to 20-inch wheels. Separate notes identify AT4X and mud-terrain-tire conditions.

Treat those notes as configuration gates, not suggestions. Photograph wheel/tire labels and RPO/build evidence; verify current tire size, load index and pressure. A wheel swap, lift or different tire does not automatically preserve a published row.

2020 diesel history shows why the year matters

GMC's 2020 guide lists the earlier 3.0L Duramax with 15,000-lb GCWR and a 3.23 axle. Its conventional table publishes 7,300–9,100 lb across the six Crew/Double Cab diesel configurations, with 9,100 lb on the 4WD Double Cab standard-bed row. Its fifth-wheel/gooseneck columns publish 6,900–7,300 lb.

Those rows cannot be updated by dropping the 2026 maximum into an older truck. The 2020 guide documents a different year, powertrain context and configuration matrix. Select the original model-year guide before comparing a used candidate.

Canadian verification

GMC Canada's current 2026 Sierra 1500 page publishes available maximum diesel towing of 6,032 kg (13,300 lb) and shows the 3.0L Duramax with a ten-speed in multiple trim contexts. That Canadian headline supports the family maximum, not a configuration assignment for an unseen truck.

For a Canadian candidate, obtain the VIN/build or RPO record, exact Canadian model-year trailering and owner literature, certification and carrying-capacity labels, cab, bed, drivetrain, engine, package, wheel/tire and hitch evidence. Confirm provincial licence and operating requirements separately. No VIN or vehicle-specific evidence was supplied here.

Build a loaded combination worksheet

The towing tool can organize supplied numbers but cannot recover an unknown package, wheel condition or hitch installation. The lowest truck, axle, tire, wheel, hitch, trailer or legal limit controls.

Used Sierra towing evidence to inspect

Inspect frame and hitch mounting, bed structure, rear axle and suspension, brakes, tires, wheels, cooling system, trailer wiring, seven-pin socket and integrated brake-controller operation. Record collision repair, corrosion, overload signs, suspension changes and evidence of sustained towing.

Obtain service history and photograph every relevant label. Test the trailer systems only within verified ratings, then weigh the normal loaded combination. An aftermarket spring, air helper, receiver or brake controller does not rewrite the manufacturer's GVWR, GAWR or GCWR.

Sierra 1500 towing-capacity questions

What is the highest 2026 conventional rating? 13,300 lb for an identified 3.0L Duramax Double Cab, standard-bed, 2WD Max Trailering row with 20-inch wheels and 19,000-lb GCWR.

What is the highest selected 2026 Duramax fifth-wheel/gooseneck value? 8,900 lb for the 2WD Double Cab standard-bed Max Trailering configuration.

Does every 2026 diesel Sierra tow 13,300 lb? No. The reviewed diesel conventional table spans 8,500–13,300 lb when special AT4X, tire, package and wheel rows are included.

Can a 2020 3.0L diesel use the 2026 maximum? No. The 2020 diesel table publishes its own configuration-specific 7,300–9,100-lb conventional range.

Does the Canadian headline identify my truck's row? No. Use the Canadian build, labels, exact literature, hitch and measured loads.

Is the highest conventional row also the highest fifth-wheel row? No. The manufacturer publishes separate columns and different limits.
