GMC's official 2024 Sierra HD guide publishes 50 Sierra 2500HD configurations and 150 hitch-specific cells across the main Duramax and gas tables plus a separate 10,000-lb-GVWR-and-under matrix. Ratings span 11,170 to 22,430 lb. The 22,430-lb maximum is not a general 2500HD number: it requires the main-table Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD configuration with the Max Trailering Package and a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. Engine, cab, bed, drive, GVWR branch, wheel selector, package and hitch method all remain part of the answer.
Direct answer: 11,170 to 22,430 lb across the 2024 source
The highest 2024 Sierra 2500HD trailer rating is 22,430 lb. GMC assigns it to the Duramax Regular Cab long bed, 2WD, Max Trailering Package and either fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. The conventional column in that same row is 14,500 lb.
The smallest cell is 11,170 lb for fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing in either optional-10,000-lb-GVWR Duramax Crew Cab long-bed 4WD wheel branch. Its conventional rating is 14,500 lb with 17-inch wheels or 17,700 lb with 18- or 20-inch wheels.
| Reference | Exact 2024 branch | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Overall maximum | Main Duramax Regular Cab long bed 2WD; Max Trailering Package; in-bed hitch | 22,430 lb |
| Maximum conventional | Main Duramax Max Trailering Package Crew Cab rows | 20,000 lb |
| Highest gas in-bed | Main gas Regular Cab long bed 2WD | 18,700 lb |
| Smallest published cell | Optional-GVWR Duramax Crew Cab long bed 4WD; fifth-wheel or gooseneck | 11,170 lb |
2024 changes the configuration tree
The 2024 Duramax table adds dedicated Max Trailering Package rows for both Regular Cab drivetrains and all four Crew Cab body-and-drive combinations. GMC raises GCWR to 30,000 or 30,300 lb in those branches and publishes package-specific towing cells rather than one family headline.
The separate low-GVWR matrix also changes: it contains ten diesel and fourteen gas configurations, with 17-inch versus 18- or 20-inch wheel selectors for Crew Cab rows. These are not 2023 rows with a new label, so this page transcribes the 2024 source independently.
Main 6.6L Duramax table
Sixteen principal Duramax configurations cover standard and Max Trailering Package branches. GMC requires the package rows to have the available integrated trailer brake controller, 18- or 20-inch wheels and tires, and spray-on bed liner.

Main 6.6L gas V8 table
The ten gas rows use a 26,000-lb GCWR. Conventional ratings are 14,500 or 16,000 lb, while fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings run from 18,000 to 18,700 lb. The 2024 gas values therefore cannot be imported from the prior 24,000-lb-GCWR table.

10,000-lb-GVWR-and-under Duramax table
The optional-GVWR diesel branch has ten rows. GMC publishes equal in-bed ratings for the paired Crew Cab wheel branches but changes conventional capacity and GCWR with wheel selection. Wheel size therefore stays in every selector.

10,000-lb-GVWR-and-under gas table
Fourteen gas configurations occupy the optional branch. The Regular Cab 2WD row is 9,900 lb GVWR; the others are 10,000 lb. Crew Cab wheel selectors can change conventional capacity or GCWR without changing the paired in-bed value.

Coverage accounting: 50 rows and 150 hitch cells
The main Duramax table supplies 16 configurations and the main gas table supplies 10. The optional-GVWR matrix adds 10 diesel and 14 gas rows. Every row has conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck fields, producing 150 attributable towing cells.
Repeated fifth-wheel and gooseneck values are preserved as separate source fields. GVWR, GCWR and payload remain distinct ratings and are not included in that towing-cell count.
| 2024 source branch | Configurations | Hitch columns | Towing cells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Duramax | 16 | 3 | 48 |
| Main gas | 10 | 3 | 30 |
| Optional-GVWR Duramax | 10 | 3 | 30 |
| Optional-GVWR gas | 14 | 3 | 42 |
| Total | 50 | — | 150 |
Trim footnotes can be lower than the row maximum
For the standard Duramax Crew Cab standard-bed 4WD row, GMC limits an AT4 on LT275/70R18 mud-terrain tires to 12,000 lb conventionally and 17,300 lb with an in-bed hitch. The same row lists 17,600 lb for Denali and 17,200 lb for Denali Ultimate fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing.
The Max Trailering Crew Cab rows also carry AT4, Denali and Denali Ultimate qualifications. A package-row headline never overrides its footnote, the truck's labels or the rating of the installed hitch and trailer.
GVWR, GCWR and trailer rating answer different questions
GVWR limits the loaded truck. GCWR limits the loaded truck-and-trailer combination. GMC's trailer-weight fields are maximum comparison ratings for properly equipped configurations. None replaces the others.
People, cargo, tools, options, accessories, hitch hardware and tongue or pin weight consume carrying capacity. Use the exact row first, then compare actual scale weights with the truck, axle, tire, hitch, trailer and combination limits.
Primary-source acquisition and visual verification
GMC's 35-page 2024 Sierra HD Features, Specs and Options PDF was downloaded from the manufacturer on 14 September 2026. The 5,883,009-byte file has SHA-256 cc8d5a5478b44343d6f9d7ddcef233deb7a12c24d9d07d4c3c1de6ae111cba89.
Numbered pages 18, 20 and 21 were extracted with layout preserved and rendered at 150 dpi. Page 19 is a continuation for 3500HD diesel configurations and was reviewed only to keep those rows out of this 2500HD guide. Every 2500HD row and footnote used here was checked against the rendered manufacturer pages.
Verify the individual 2024 truck
Confirm model year and 2500HD identity, then record engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, GVWR option, wheel branch, Max Trailering equipment, trim footnote and installed hitch. Obtain the build record and photograph the certification, tire/loading and hitch labels.
Weigh the truck and trailer in travel-ready condition. Compare vehicle, axle, combination and tongue or pin weights with every applicable rating instead of treating the largest published cell as permission to tow.
Canadian use needs Canadian vehicle evidence
The complete table is a U.S. manufacturer matrix. It does not certify the origin, equipment or compliance status of an unseen Canadian VIN. For a Canadian truck, use its own labels, build documentation and installed components and apply the relevant provincial or territorial requirements.
No U.S. package row is silently converted into a Canadian rating. The same caution applies to registration class, licensing and commercial-use rules.
FAQ: does every 2024 Duramax 2500HD tow 22,430 lb?
No. That cell requires the Regular Cab long bed, 2WD, Max Trailering Package and an in-bed hitch. Main-table Duramax cells start at 14,500 lb, and optional-GVWR diesel cells reach as low as 11,170 lb.
