GMC's official 2023 Features, Specs and Options guide publishes 38 Sierra 2500HD configurations across its standard and optional 10,000-lb-GVWR tables. The 114 hitch-specific cells span 10,240 to 18,510 lb. The maximum belongs only to the Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD row with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. Cab, bed, drivetrain, engine, GVWR branch, wheel size and hitch method remain part of the lookup; an identical maximum in another year does not make the underlying rows interchangeable.

Direct answer: 10,240 to 18,510 lb in GMC's 2023 matrix

The 2023 Sierra 2500HD's largest published trailer-weight rating is 18,510 lb. It appears in the main 6.6L Duramax table for the Regular Cab, long bed and 2WD combination with either an in-bed fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. That row remains 14,500 lb conventionally.

At the other end, 10,240 lb applies to fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing in the optional-10,000-lb-GVWR Duramax Crew Cab long-bed 4WD selector with 18- or 20-inch wheels. GMC publishes 16,560 lb in its conventional column. The badge and engine alone therefore cannot select a rating.

Numbered pages 14 and 15 provide the principal diesel and gas tables. Numbered page 16 is a separate specifications table for 2500HD models ordered with the available 10,000-lb-GVWR option. Its diesel selectors differ materially: Double Cab is 4WD-only, and wheel diameter divides the Crew Cab rows.

A repeated cab or bed label does not authorize crossing between these branches. This guide keeps source omissions intact and does not reconstruct Regular Cab or 2WD Double Cab diesel combinations that GMC did not place in the optional-GVWR table.

Main 6.6L Duramax table

The ten principal Duramax configurations use 26,000- or 27,500-lb GCWRs. The conventional column changes from 14,500 lb for Regular and Double Cab to 18,500 lb for Crew Cab, while the two in-bed-hitch columns preserve each cab, bed and drivetrain result.

Main 6.6L gas V8 table

GMC assigns every main-table gas 2500HD row a 24,000-lb GCWR and 14,500-lb conventional rating. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings still vary by cab, bed and drivetrain, from 16,550 to 17,370 lb. Retaining those ten rows prevents a gas maximum from being treated as universal.

Optional 10,000-lb-GVWR Duramax table

The optional-GVWR diesel matrix has eight configurations. Wheel size is a source selector for the Crew Cab, not a styling note. Its 24,500- and 26,000-lb GCWR branches also show why an in-bed hitch can have a lower published limit than the conventional hitch on the same truck.

Optional 10,000-lb-GVWR gas table

The gas branch contains ten rows. Regular Cab 2WD is shown at 9,900 lb GVWR; the remaining rows are 10,000 lb. Trailer values match the gas figures in the principal table, but GMC still publishes this as a separate GVWR option, so the rows are retained independently.

Coverage check: 38 configurations and 114 towing cells

The main diesel and gas tables each contribute ten configurations. The optional-GVWR table contributes eight diesel and ten gas configurations. Multiplying each row by GMC's three hitch-specific columns produces 114 attributable cells; GVWR, GCWR and payload are separate source fields and are not counted as trailer ratings.

Repeated values are not deduplicated because they still belong to different configurations or hitch methods. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck happen to match in every 2500HD row here, but the guide preserves both columns and does not project that relationship to a 3500HD, another model year or an installed hitch.

Powertrain and rating fields remain separate

GMC identifies the 2023 Duramax branch with the Allison 10L1000 ten-speed and 3.42 final drive; the gas branch uses the 6L90 six-speed and 3.73 final drive. Those identifiers help locate a row but do not override its cab, bed, drive, wheel, GVWR or hitch conditions.

GVWR is the loaded-vehicle ceiling. GCWR governs the combined loaded truck and trailer. The published trailer-weight cell is another maximum. Subtracting an assumed curb weight from GCWR cannot replace the exact source rating, and a maximum payload is not promised simultaneously with a maximum trailer.

Footnotes can lower a trim-specific result

The 18,500-lb Duramax Crew Cab standard-bed 4WD fifth-wheel and gooseneck cell carries a Denali maximum of 17,860 lb. GMC also publishes AT4 and Denali payload qualifications on that row and the long-bed 4WD row. The table maximum is therefore not permission to ignore trim footnotes or the truck's certification and tire/loading labels.

Passengers, cargo, options, accessories, hitch hardware and trailer tongue or pin weight consume available carrying capacity. The hitch, tires, axles, coupler, pin box and trailer keep their own ratings; the lowest applicable limit controls.

Primary-source acquisition and verification

GMC's 28-page 2023 Features, Specs and Options PDF was downloaded from the manufacturer on 14 September 2026. The 1,431,069-byte file has SHA-256 8150ea0295ee0c7ca74b41c92e3f3535e58dfddcb1c6f75ade8c5f24616d7115. Numbered pages 14 through 16 were extracted with layout preserved and rendered at 150 dpi for direct comparison against every transcribed row.

The document is U.S.-market evidence. GMC Canada's 2023 trailering page independently confirms the four Canadian headline branches—14,500-lb gas conventional, 17,370-lb gas in-bed, 18,500-lb diesel conventional and 18,510-lb diesel in-bed—but it does not replace the full configuration matrix.

Verify an individual truck before towing

Confirm that the truck is a 2023 Sierra 2500HD, then identify its engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, GVWR option, wheel selector where applicable, trim footnote and installed hitch. Obtain the build record and photograph the certification, tire/loading and hitch labels rather than inferring equipment from appearance.

Load the truck and trailer as they will travel, including people, tools, cargo, accessories and hitch equipment. Use scale weights to compare total vehicle, axle, combination and tongue or pin loads with each applicable rating.

Canadian use requires Canadian vehicle evidence

The U.S. source establishes GMC's configuration table, not the origin, compliance status or certified equipment of an unseen Canadian VIN. A matching Canadian headline does not turn every U.S. row into a Canadian certification.

For a truck used in Canada, verify its own labels, build documentation and installed components, then apply the relevant provincial or territorial licensing and operating requirements.

FAQ: does every 2023 Duramax 2500HD tow 18,510 lb?

No. The top rating is confined to the main-table Regular Cab long-bed 2WD fifth-wheel or gooseneck row. Other Duramax cells range down to 10,240 lb in the optional-GVWR branch.

FAQ: can a missing optional-GVWR row use the main table?

No. GMC publishes the branches independently. If the optional-GVWR matrix omits a cab, drive or wheel combination, this guide leaves it unassigned instead of importing a value from the principal table or another year.
