GMC's official 2021 trailering guide publishes the Sierra 2500HD in two rating branches: the main diesel and gas specifications, plus an optional 10,000-lb-GVWR-or-less table. Across 38 configuration rows and 114 hitch-specific cells, published trailer ratings run from 10,240 to 18,510 lb. The 18,510-lb maximum is limited to the standard Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD row with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. Engine, cab, bed, drive, wheel size, GVWR, GCWR and hitch method all remain part of the selection, and this U.S. guide does not certify an unseen Canadian VIN.

Direct answer: 10,240 to 18,510 lb across the 2021 tables

The largest published 2021 Sierra 2500HD cell is 18,510 lb. GMC assigns it to the main-table Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD configuration with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch; the conventional rating in that same row is 14,500 lb.

The 10,240-lb low is not a base-truck shorthand. It is the optional-10,000-lb-GVWR Duramax Crew Cab long-bed 4WD selector with 18- or 20-inch wheels through an in-bed hitch. That row's conventional column is 16,560 lb. The correct answer therefore comes from the complete row, not the largest value associated with the badge.

Select the 2021 source branch before the configuration

The main 2021 table separates the 6.6L Duramax and 6.6L gas V8. GMC then publishes another table for optional GVWR selections at or below 10,000 lb. A matching cab and engine description does not make those branches interchangeable.

Within the optional-GVWR diesel table, wheel diameter is part of four Crew Cab selectors. The source omits Regular Cab and 2WD Double Cab diesel rows from that branch, so this guide does not manufacture them from the main table.

Main-table 6.6L Duramax ratings

These are all ten 2021 Sierra 2500HD Duramax configurations in GMC's main table. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck remain separate columns even though the values match in every listed 2500HD row.

Main-table 6.6L gas V8 ratings

All ten gas configurations use a 24,000-lb GCWR and a 14,500-lb conventional rating in the main table. In-bed-hitch ratings still change with cab, bed and drivetrain, from 16,550 to 17,370 lb.

Optional 10,000-lb-or-less GVWR Duramax ratings

GMC's complete optional-GVWR diesel branch has eight rows. It preserves wheel-specific Crew Cab distinctions and a 24,500- or 26,000-lb GCWR. The last row demonstrates why an in-bed hitch is not automatically the largest column.

Optional 10,000-lb-or-less GVWR gas ratings

The optional-GVWR gas branch contains ten rows. Its trailer values match the gas figures in the main specification table, while GVWR and payload remain separate source fields. Regular Cab 2WD is the one 9,900-lb-GVWR row; the other nine are 10,000 lb.

Every one of the 114 hitch cells stays attributable

The main tables contribute 60 cells: ten diesel and ten gas configurations across conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck fields. The optional-GVWR branch contributes 54 more: eight diesel and ten gas configurations across the same three hitch methods.

Repeated figures remain in place because they represent distinct configurations or hitch fields. GCWR, GVWR and payload are not counted as towing cells.

The 2021 powertrain identity is part of the lookup

For 2021, GMC lists the 6.6L Duramax at 445 hp and 910 lb-ft with the Allison 10L1000 ten-speed and a 3.42 final drive. The 6.6L gas V8 is 401 hp and 464 lb-ft with the 6L90 six-speed and a 3.73 final drive.

These specifications identify the source branch. They do not make a rating transferable between GVWR options, cabs, beds, drivetrains or wheel selectors.

GCWR does not replace the trailer-rating cell

GMC defines GCWR as the rating for the loaded truck-and-trailer combination, including people, fuel, equipment and cargo in both. The towing columns are separate maximum-trailer figures for properly equipped configurations.

Subtracting an assumed curb weight from GCWR can create a number GMC did not publish. Match the hitch cell, then verify the actual combination, axle, tire, hitch and trailer constraints.

Payload, pin weight and passengers still constrain the truck

In the listed main-table 2500HD rows, GMC publishes maximum payloads of 3,553 to 3,715 lb for Duramax and 3,751 to 3,979 lb for gas. The optional-GVWR branch runs from 2,047 to 2,375 lb for diesel and 3,040 to 3,757 lb for gas.

Those comparison values are not promised simultaneously with the highest trailer cell. Occupants, tools, cargo, options, accessories, hitch hardware and trailer tongue or pin weight all consume carrying capacity.

Matching fifth-wheel and gooseneck figures are model-year evidence

Each 2021 Sierra 2500HD row in this source shows equal fifth-wheel and gooseneck values. This page retains both because GMC publishes both. It does not extend that equality to the 3500HD rows, another year or installed hitch equipment.

The lowest-rated component remains the limit. Check hitch labels and installation along with the truck, axle, tire, coupler, pin-box, ball and trailer ratings.

Source acquisition and visual verification

The 61-page manufacturer PDF was downloaded from GMC on 14 September 2026. Its SHA-256 is e73a558ae8f8171e689a151974c020e12e6994b6f4d50941fc601df09be4939c. Numbered pages 4, 5 and 6 were extracted with their layout intact and rendered for direct visual comparison with every transcribed row.

GMC's manual portals are linked for owner-document retrieval only. They are not substituted for the exact 2021 numeric matrix and do not establish Canadian certification for a truck that has not been identified.

Verification checklist for a specific 2021 truck

Verify the model year and 2500HD identity, then record engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, GVWR branch, wheel size where the optional diesel table requires it, and installed hitch. Photograph the certification and tire/loading labels and obtain the build record.

Weigh the truck and trailer as loaded for travel, including occupants, cargo, tools, accessories and hitch equipment. Compare total, axle, combination and pin or tongue measurements with each corresponding rating.

Canadian use needs Canadian vehicle evidence

The figures on this page come from GMC's U.S. 2021 trailering guide. They establish the manufacturer's U.S. configuration matrix but not the original market, certified configuration or legal status of an unseen Canadian VIN.

For a Canadian truck, verify its own compliance and loading labels, build documentation and installed components, then apply the relevant provincial or territorial requirements.

FAQ: does every 2021 Duramax 2500HD tow 18,510 lb?

No. The main Duramax table ranges from 14,500 to 18,510 lb across hitch cells, while the optional-GVWR diesel table ranges from 10,240 to 17,970 lb. The maximum belongs to one Regular Cab long-bed 2WD in-bed-hitch branch.

FAQ: is an in-bed hitch always the higher rating?

No. Several optional-GVWR Duramax rows have a higher conventional figure. The Crew Cab long-bed 4WD selector with 18- or 20-inch wheels is 16,560 lb conventional but 10,240 lb for fifth-wheel and gooseneck.

FAQ: may a main-table figure fill an omitted optional-GVWR row?

No. GMC defines the branches separately. When the optional-GVWR source does not publish a cab, drive or wheel combination, this guide leaves that position unresolved rather than importing a rating.
