GMC's official 2022 Sierra HD Features, Specs and Options guide publishes 20 Sierra 2500HD configurations and 60 base hitch-specific cells. Ratings run from 14,500 to 18,510 lb. The 18,510-lb maximum belongs only to the Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD row with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch; the same row is 14,500 lb conventionally. Engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, GVWR, GCWR, hitch method and applicable AT4 or Denali footnotes all remain part of the answer.
Direct answer: 14,500 to 18,510 lb in the 2022 matrix
The largest published 2022 Sierra 2500HD rating is 18,510 lb. GMC assigns it to the 6.6L Duramax Regular Cab, long bed and 2WD configuration with either a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. That exact row is rated at 14,500 lb with a conventional hitch.
Maximum conventional towing is 18,500 lb in the four Duramax Crew Cab rows. The gas table peaks at 17,370 lb for the Regular Cab long-bed 2WD fifth-wheel or gooseneck configuration. A single model-level number therefore cannot replace the correct source row.
| 2022 reference | Exact configuration | Published rating |
|---|---|---|
| Overall maximum | Duramax Regular Cab long bed 2WD; fifth-wheel or gooseneck | 18,510 lb |
| Maximum conventional | Duramax Crew Cab; either bed and either drive | 18,500 lb |
| Gas in-bed maximum | Gas Regular Cab long bed 2WD; fifth-wheel or gooseneck | 17,370 lb |
| Minimum base hitch cell | Multiple gas or diesel conventional rows | 14,500 lb |
2022 6.6L Duramax ratings
GMC's diesel matrix contains ten configurations. Regular and Double Cab rows use a 26,000-lb GCWR and 14,500-lb conventional rating. Crew Cab rows use a 27,500-lb GCWR and 18,500-lb conventional rating. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck figures match within every listed 2500HD row, but both columns are preserved because GMC publishes them separately.

2022 6.6L gas V8 ratings
All ten gas configurations carry a 24,000-lb GCWR and a 14,500-lb conventional rating. The in-bed figures still vary by cab, bed and drive, from 16,550 to 17,370 lb. The gas maximum is not interchangeable with the diesel table or with a different body configuration.

AT4 and Denali footnotes lower selected rows
The starred diesel Crew Cab standard-bed 4WD in-bed value is 17,860 lb for Denali, not 18,500 lb. Its 3,563-lb base payload becomes 3,331 lb for AT4 or 3,162 lb for Denali. The diesel Crew Cab long-bed 4WD payload is 3,439 lb for AT4 or 3,319 lb for Denali instead of the 3,597-lb base value.
For gas, the Crew Cab standard-bed 4WD in-bed value is 16,380 lb for AT4 or 16,260 lb for Denali; payload is 3,514 or 3,395 lb respectively. The long-bed 4WD in-bed value is 16,270 lb for AT4 or 16,150 lb for Denali; payload is 3,608 or 3,488 lb.

All 60 base hitch cells remain attributable
Ten diesel and ten gas rows each contain separate conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck fields. That produces 60 base towing cells. Repeated numbers remain because each belongs to a distinct engine, cab, bed, drive or hitch combination; the trim qualifications are additional restrictions rather than extra base rows.
GVWR, GCWR and payload are shown to keep the row usable, but they are not counted as towing cells and cannot be substituted for a trailer rating.
| 2022 branch | Configuration rows | Hitch columns | Base towing cells |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.6L Duramax | 10 | 3 | 30 |
| 6.6L gas V8 | 10 | 3 | 30 |
| Total | 20 | — | 60 |
Powertrain identity is part of the lookup
GMC lists the 2022 6.6L Duramax at 445 hp and 910 lb-ft, paired with the Allison ten-speed and a 3.42 final drive. The 6.6L gas V8 is rated at 401 hp and 464 lb-ft with a six-speed and 3.73 final drive. These details identify the correct source branch; they do not make a rating transferable between body, drive or trim rows.
Mud-terrain-tire reduction is real but not quantified here
GMC states that available mud-terrain tires on 2500HD reduce conventional trailer-weight capacity, then directs the reader to a dealer. The source does not publish the amount in this matrix. This guide therefore preserves the warning without inventing a reduced figure or applying one to fifth-wheel or gooseneck columns.
GCWR, payload and hitch limits remain separate
GCWR is the ceiling for the loaded truck-and-trailer combination. GVWR governs the loaded truck. The trailer cell, axle ratings, tires, wheels, receiver or in-bed hitch, coupler and trailer each remain independent limits. Subtracting an assumed curb weight from GCWR does not create an official towing rating.
Maximum payload and maximum trailer rating are not promised simultaneously. Occupants, tools, cargo, options, accessories, hitch hardware and trailer tongue or pin weight all consume carrying capacity.
Primary-source acquisition and limits
GMC's manufacturer-hosted 12-page 2022 Sierra HD Features, Specs and Options PDF was opened and extracted on 16 September 2026. Its numbered pages 10 and 11 expose the complete 2500HD gas and diesel matrix and its footnotes. The browser client did not export a trustworthy local binary, so no file size or SHA-256 is claimed.
The table is U.S.-market evidence. It does not establish the origin, certified configuration or legal status of an unseen Canadian VIN, and the adjacent 3500HD rows are not imported into this 2500HD guide.
Verify a specific 2022 truck before towing
Confirm model year and 2500HD identity, then record engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, trim, GVWR, GCWR and installed hitch. Obtain the build record and photograph the certification, tire/loading and hitch labels. Do not infer a row from appearance alone.
Load the truck and trailer as they will travel, including people, fuel, tools, cargo, accessories and hitch equipment. Use scale weights to compare total vehicle, axle, combination and tongue or pin loads with every applicable rating.
Canadian use requires Canadian vehicle evidence
A U.S. configuration matrix does not certify a Canadian truck. For Canadian use, verify the truck's own compliance and loading labels, build documentation and installed components, then apply the relevant provincial or territorial licensing and operating requirements.
FAQ: does every 2022 Duramax 2500HD tow 18,510 lb?
No. The maximum belongs only to the Regular Cab long-bed 2WD fifth-wheel or gooseneck row. Other Duramax in-bed figures run from 17,750 to 18,500 lb, while conventional ratings are 14,500 or 18,500 lb depending on cab.
FAQ: are fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings interchangeable?
GMC publishes equal values for those two hitch columns in every 2022 Sierra 2500HD row shown here. This page retains both fields and does not extend that equality to a 3500HD, another model year or installed equipment with a lower rating.
