A 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD can present two very different buying questions: whether applicable brake and diesel-transmission safety work is complete, and whether a towing-assistance feature is genuinely faulty or simply outside its setup conditions. This review uses the 2022 manufacturer brochure, the exact HD owner manual and three records returned by the U.S. model-year query on 15 September 2026. It separates those questions without assigning a failure rate, predicting engine life or turning an HD-family towing headline into a rating for this 2500HD.

Identify which 2022 powertrain and equipment were actually built

GMC's 2022 Sierra HD brochure documents two 6.6L engines with different transmissions. The engine badge, service invoices and vehicle identification need to agree before a buyer applies transmission campaign information. The brochure also cautions that supply-chain shortages could affect feature availability; a picture or general feature list is not proof that the individual truck has that equipment.

6.6L direct-injection gas V8 / six-speed automatic401 hp; 464 lb-ftDo not apply a diesel-only transmission campaign solely because the badge says 2500HD.

Three campaign records describe three different repairs

The exact 2022 Sierra 2500 query returned the following records. This is a point-in-time U.S. evidence set, not a count of defects on a particular truck or confirmation that a Canadian VIN is included. A current dealer VIN inquiry must connect each applicable campaign to a completed operation.

Campaign / GM numberScope and concernRepair or immediate instruction
21V758000 / N212349181Certain trucks with an EBCM replaced during assembly; inadequately tightened BPMV bolts can allow water intrusion and an electrical short/fire.Replace BPMV assembly. Affected unrepaired vehicles are instructed to park outside away from structures.

A 2022 build date is not a stand-alone transmission clearance

GM's October 2024 Part 573 filing groups 2020–2022 Sierra 2500/3500 diesel vehicles and gives a Sierra HD production range ending on 7 January 2022. A separate production-correction paragraph refers to HD vehicles built after 11 January 2022 having revised control software. Those statements serve different purposes; this review does not turn the dates between them into an invented eligibility rule.

The same filing's March 2022 production discussion concerns Silverado and Sierra 1500 half-tons. Do not use that date to clear or include a 2500HD. Ask the dealer to resolve the VIN and calibration history, including any replacement transmission or control components, rather than relying on the door-label month alone.

The filing describes a protective fifth-gear limitation with a service-engine light and reduced-propulsion message after valve wear is detected. That behaviour is not a complete hardware repair, and the next key cycle is not proof of recovery. If harsh shifting or propulsion warnings occur, obtain professional assessment before towing instead of trying to reproduce a dangerous downshift.

L5P exhaust faults need diagnosis, not a parts guess

GM bulletin 23-NA-061, dated April 2023, explicitly lists 2022–2024 Sierra 2500HD/3500HD with the L5P diesel. It describes warning-light, exhaust-odour and noise complaints that may be caused by an exhaust leak. Its condition list includes P20EE, P11D5 and particulate-filter codes P2459/P2463. A code names a diagnostic condition; it does not by itself prove a failed NOx sensor, catalyst or particulate filter.

For a used 2022 truck, ask for the actual codes, technician findings and evidence that the system was retested after any leak repair. The bulletin distinguishes smoke and pressure leak testing because each has limitations, including smoke being removed as it passes through a DPF. It also identifies normal leakage at a specific turbocharger actuator area; that narrow workshop distinction must not be expanded into permission to ignore exhaust odour or a warning.

These are professional diagnostic procedures, not a driveway pressure-test recipe or a blanket repair recommendation. The bulletin supplies a relevant inspection question, not a measured failure frequency, universal defect or Canadian recall entitlement.

Check camera equipment and setup before calling a feature unreliable

The 2022 HD manual makes towing views conditional on installed equipment, a compatible trailer profile and camera connection. Its Trailer Length Indicator overlay requires a configured, selected profile and a trailer positioned relatively straight behind the truck. The overlay may disappear when the trailer is angled too far left or right.

The Trailer Angle Indicator has a different condition: Reverse, guidelines enabled and the rear trailering views. Jack-Knife Detection distinguishes a caution warning from an alert indicating an imminent collision. These are aids, not permission to reverse until an alert sounds. GMC specifically warns against using Hitch Guidance to make lane-change decisions; mirrors and direct observation still matter.

For the buying inspection, demonstrate the feature with a suitable trailer and qualified assistance in a safe area. Check the selected profile, camera installation, connections and calibration before assigning a screen complaint to a failed module. An unavailable optional feature, an incompatible setup and a broken component are different findings and should appear separately on the inspection report.

Transparent Trailer has exact dimensional requirements

The selected 2022 manual setup page gives the following ranges in centimetres. These are feature-configuration inputs, not load ratings or a promise of compatibility with every trailer within the ranges. The accessory rear camera must be connected, and the setup includes forward-driving calibration. Out-of-range dimensions make the feature unavailable.

Do not borrow a 2021 towing row to fill the 2022 evidence gap

The recovered 2022 sales brochure verifies the engine/transmission pairings, but it is not a complete 2500HD cab, bed, drive, GVWR and hitch matrix. Its 36,000-lb HD-family headline is not assigned to this 2500HD. A reproduced table on a secondary website likewise does not replace direct verification of the underlying GM data.

Consequently, this reliability guide does not invent a 2022 2500HD maximum or carry forward the 2020/2021 rows. The separate 2022 towing-capacity target remains unpublished pending the exact primary matrix. For an actual towing purchase, obtain the VIN-specific labels and manufacturer configuration information, then check the loaded truck, trailer, hitch and axle limits. Camera capability cannot raise any of those limits.

That source boundary is not a conclusion that the truck cannot tow or that it is unreliable. It means this review can support the documented powertrain, campaign and feature checks while leaving a different numeric lookup honestly unfinished.

Build the inspection around records and observed faults

Start with current VIN results and the applicable BPMV, tailgate and transmission repair orders. Keep any park-outside instruction in force until the dealer confirms completion for an affected vehicle. A receipt for brake pads does not document a BPMV assembly replacement, and a functioning tailgate at the viewing does not establish switch-campaign completion.

Next, compare the truck's actual options and trailer setup with the owner literature. Ask the technician to record unresolved warning messages, diagnostic findings and evidence of prior replacement components. Use written inspection findings to decide whether further diagnosis is necessary before a loaded test; do not clear warnings merely to obtain a reassuring dashboard.

Maintenance history still matters, but the separate exact-year 6.6L Duramax supplement has not been fully recovered and audited here. No diesel oil, fuel-filter or emissions-service interval is copied from the gas-engine sections of the main manual. Obtain the appropriate literature and invoices as part of the vehicle-specific assessment.

A bounded reliability verdict

The defensible conclusion is conditional: a 2022 Sierra 2500HD needs verified applicable safety repairs, an independently assessed powertrain and brakes, and a load/equipment plan matched to its real build. The available sources do not establish that this year is better or worse than another, nor do three query entries measure its likelihood of failure.

This page addresses documented year-specific concerns and feature limits, not every potential engine, emissions, electrical or chassis issue. It does not certify a Canadian VIN, predict remaining kilometres, invent repair prices or claim active inventory. Catalogue profiles linked below are editorial references, and the unresolved primary towing matrix remains a separate research task.

Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
