GMC's official 2020 trailering guide publishes two distinct Sierra 2500HD rating matrices. The standard table spans 14,500 to 18,510 lb across gas and Duramax configurations; the separate 10,000-lb-or-less GVWR table spans 10,240 to 17,970 lb. The 18,510-lb maximum belongs only to the standard-GVWR Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD row with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. Cab, bed, drive, engine, wheel size, GVWR, GCWR and hitch method all determine the applicable cell, and the U.S. guide does not certify an unseen Canadian VIN.
Direct answer: 10,240 to 18,510 lb across both GMC matrices
The model-wide maximum is 18,510 lb, but it is not a conventional-hitch rating and it does not describe every diesel truck. GMC assigns it to the standard-GVWR 2500HD Regular Cab long-bed 2WD Duramax row through either a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch; that row's conventional limit is 14,500 lb.
At the other end, the 10,240-lb value belongs to the separate 10,000-lb-GVWR Crew Cab long-bed 4WD Duramax row with 18- or 20-inch wheels through a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. Its conventional rating is 16,560 lb, showing why hitch columns cannot be ranked by a simple universal rule.
| Reference point | Exact branch | Published trailer rating |
|---|---|---|
| Overall maximum | Standard-GVWR Duramax Regular Cab long bed 2WD; fifth-wheel or gooseneck | 18,510 lb |
| Maximum conventional | Standard-GVWR Duramax Crew Cab; either bed and either drive | 18,500 lb |
| Low-GVWR conventional maximum | 10,000-lb-GVWR Duramax Crew Cab long bed 2WD; 18- or 20-inch wheels | 17,970 lb |
| Overall minimum cell | 10,000-lb-GVWR Duramax Crew Cab long bed 4WD; 18- or 20-inch wheels; fifth-wheel or gooseneck | 10,240 lb |
Choose the matrix before choosing a number
First identify whether the truck uses GMC's standard Sierra HD table or the separate 10,000-lb-GVWR-or-less table. Then match engine, cab, bed, 2WD or 4WD, and—where GMC specifies it—17-inch versus 18- or 20-inch wheels. Only after that should the GCWR and hitch columns be read.
The low-GVWR table is not a shorthand copy. Its diesel selector includes only Double Cab 4WD and selected Crew Cab rows, and its wheel branches change both conventional and in-bed hitch results. Missing Regular Cab and 2WD Double Cab diesel positions are not backfilled from the standard table.
Standard-GVWR Duramax ratings
All ten standard-table Duramax rows are preserved below. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck values happen to match within every 2500HD row in this 2020 guide, but they remain separate published hitch columns rather than one invented combined rating.

10,000-lb-or-less GVWR Duramax ratings
This is GMC's complete eight-row low-GVWR diesel table. Wheel size is part of four Crew Cab selectors. The long-bed Crew Cab 4WD with 18- or 20-inch wheels pairs a 16,560-lb conventional rating with 10,240-lb fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings; neither value should be replaced by the larger number from another column.

10,000-lb-or-less GVWR gas ratings
The low-GVWR gas branch publishes ten rows. Its trailer values match the gas figures in GMC's adjacent standard specification table, but the GVWR and payload fields are separate source evidence. The Regular Cab 2WD row is 9,900 lb GVWR; the other nine are 10,000 lb.
| Cab / drive | Bed | GVWR / GCWR | Conventional | Fifth-wheel | Gooseneck |

All 114 published hitch cells remain accountable
The standard matrix contributes 60 trailer cells: ten diesel and ten gas configurations, each with conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck entries. The low-GVWR matrix contributes 54 more: eight diesel and ten gas rows across the same three hitch columns.
Repeated values are not deduplicated because they belong to different source rows or hitch fields. The count also excludes GCWR, GVWR and payload, which are related constraints rather than trailer ratings.
| Source branch | Configurations | Hitch columns | Published cells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Duramax | 10 | 3 | 30 |
| Standard gas | 10 | 3 | 30 |
| Low-GVWR Duramax | 8 | 3 | 24 |
| Low-GVWR gas | 10 | 3 | 30 |
| Total | 38 | — | 114 |
Powertrain identity matters
The 2020 6.6L Duramax is rated by GMC at 445 hp and 910 lb-ft and uses the Allison 10L1000 ten-speed with a 3.42 final drive. The 6.6L gas V8 is rated at 401 hp and 464 lb-ft and uses the 6L90 six-speed with a 3.73 final drive.
Those powertrain facts help identify the correct branch; they do not authorize transferring a trailer rating between bodies, drives, GVWR packages or wheel selectors.
GCWR is not trailer capacity
GMC defines GCWR as the rating for the combined truck-and-trailer weight, including driver, passengers, fuel, optional equipment and cargo in both truck and trailer. The source's trailer columns already express separate maximum-trailer figures for properly equipped vehicles.
Do not subtract a guessed curb weight from GCWR to manufacture a higher trailer allowance. Use the published hitch cell, then verify the actual loaded combination and every lower component limit.
Payload and pin weight remain separate limits
GMC's standard 2500HD table publishes maximum payloads from 3,553 to 3,715 lb for the listed Duramax rows and 3,751 to 3,979 lb for gas. The low-GVWR table drops to 2,047–2,375 lb for diesel and 3,040–3,757 lb for gas.
These are comparison figures, not simultaneous promises beside the largest trailer number. Passengers, cargo, options, accessories and hitch hardware use carrying capacity, while trailer tongue or pin weight also loads the truck and its axles.
Fifth-wheel and gooseneck equality is source-specific
Every 2020 Sierra 2500HD row shown here has matching fifth-wheel and gooseneck values. That equality is retained because GMC printed both columns; it is not generalized to Sierra 3500HD, another model year, another manufacturer, or the rating of installed hitch equipment.
Confirm the actual hitch type, label, mounting, condition and trailer compatibility. A vehicle rating cannot raise a lower receiver, coupler, pin-box, ball, tire, axle or trailer limit.
Source method and visual verification
The 56-page manufacturer PDF was downloaded from GMC on 14 September 2026. Its SHA-256 is e3874991d5e32229fe2b4a0d246ef2aa39e8b6632fec66e191b81d168db1777e. Pages 4 and 5 of the numbered guide were extracted with layout preservation and rendered at high resolution for visual comparison against every transcribed row.
The general GMC and GMC Canada manual portals are provided only to help owners retrieve vehicle instructions. They do not replace the exact 2020 numeric matrix and are not presented as proof of a Canadian-market configuration rating.
Candidate verification checklist
Confirm the 2020 model year, 2500HD identity, engine, cab, bed, 2WD or 4WD, GVWR branch, wheel size where applicable and installed hitch. Photograph the certification and tire/loading labels and obtain the factory build record before choosing a source row.
Load passengers, cargo, tools, accessories, hitch equipment and trailer as intended. Measure total, axle and combination weights on suitable scales, record loaded tongue or pin weight, and compare each measurement with its own truck, axle, tire, hitch and trailer limit.
Canadian use requires Canadian truck evidence
The numeric ratings come from GMC's U.S. 2020 guide. Its general loading principles are useful, but they do not establish the original market, certified configuration or legal operating status of an unseen Canadian VIN.
For a Canadian candidate, use its compliance and loading labels, build documentation, installed equipment and the applicable provincial or territorial requirements. No U.S. source cell is converted into Canadian certification by badge similarity.
FAQ: does every diesel Sierra 2500HD tow 18,510 lb?
No. The standard-table Duramax ratings run from 14,500 to 18,510 lb depending on configuration and hitch. The low-GVWR diesel table runs from 10,240 to 17,970 lb. The 18,510-lb cell is limited to one Regular Cab long-bed 2WD in-bed-hitch configuration.
FAQ: is fifth-wheel capacity always above conventional?
No. Several low-GVWR Duramax rows publish a larger conventional rating than their fifth-wheel or gooseneck rating. For example, the Crew Cab long-bed 4WD with 18- or 20-inch wheels is 16,560 lb conventional and 10,240 lb through either in-bed hitch.
FAQ: can a standard-table value fill a missing low-GVWR row?
No. The two tables represent different manufacturer-defined branches. If the low-GVWR source omits a cab, drive or wheel combination, this guide leaves it unresolved rather than importing a standard-GVWR value.
