For a 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD, the most useful reliability assessment separates brake-system safety work, normal service monitoring and the diesel transmission history. The exact-year U.S. query reviewed on 15 September 2026 contains a narrowly scoped brake-pressure-modulator campaign with a park-outside instruction. The 2021 owner manual also explains why a missing or reset brake-pad percentage is not a physical inspection. GMC's towing sheet adds Denali-specific limits that a broad HD maximum can hide. None of these sources supports a universal reliability score or confirms an unseen Canadian VIN.

Keep the Duramax and gas service histories distinct

The 2021 GMC Trailering Guide retains the 6.6L Duramax diesel at 445 hp and 910 lb-ft with an Allison ten-speed automatic. The 6.6L gas V8 uses a six-speed. For a used diesel, record the actual engine, transmission, trim, cab, bed and weight label before comparing repair records or tow ratings. The common Sierra 2500HD badge does not make every configuration interchangeable.

Manufacturer specifications establish what was offered, not how a particular example was maintained. Ask for invoices identifying the work performed, not just service stamps. A transmission replacement, software update and routine fluid service are different events; none should be used as a substitute for the others in the inspection history.

The brake-modulator campaign carries a specific parking instruction

21V758000 / N212349181 concerns certain 2021–2022 HD trucks whose electronic brake control modules were replaced during vehicle assembly. The record says bolts attaching the brake pressure modulator valve assembly may be insufficiently tightened, allowing water between subassemblies and creating a short-circuit/fire risk. This is not a blanket statement that every 2021 truck has the defect or that all brake complaints share this cause.

The published instruction for affected, unrepaired vehicles is to park outside and away from structures until repaired. The remedy is BPMV assembly replacement, not a brake-pad-life reset or an assumed software update. Obtain a current VIN check and documentation of the applicable replacement. If the status is unresolved, ask the dealer how the vehicle should be handled before bringing it into a garage for inspection.

The exact query returned six records. Treat the brake-modulator entry as a scope-and-remedy question, not an incidence statistic. Its presence does not reveal a Canadian truck's campaign completion; its narrow production history also makes a seller's generic claim of new brakes insufficient evidence.

A pad-life percentage is an estimate, not proof of new brakes

The 2021 HD owner manual describes a system estimating remaining front and rear pad life. It must be reset when pads are changed, and manual reset is possible. The display therefore needs to be reconciled with an invoice and inspection of both axles rather than accepted as a measured remaining thickness.

The manual also permits disabling that monitoring system, for example when aftermarket pads without wear sensors are installed. Front and rear percentages then disappear, while mechanical wear indicators still operate. Missing percentages do not by themselves identify an EBCM defect, and disabling the display does not remedy a hydraulic or recall-related problem.

Have the technician check the installed pads, sensors, rotors and service records. GMC directs replacement as complete axle sets and calls for service when wear warnings occur or pedal travel changes abnormally. A normal-looking percentage should not overrule those physical symptoms. This evidence concerns the exact 2021 HD manual; it is not a claim about all earlier or later monitoring systems.

The diesel transmission action is separate from the brake concern

24V797000 / N242454440 includes certain diesel-powered 2020–2022 Sierra 2500/3500 vehicles. GM's Part 573 filing describes control-valve wear, loss of pressure, harsh shifts and possible momentary rear-wheel lockup. It explicitly distinguishes gas vehicles, which use a different transmission and are outside that campaign.

The remedy software monitors the valve condition and can limit operation to fifth gear with a service-engine light and reduced-propulsion message. That is a protective strategy, not confirmation that worn hardware is renewed. Ask the dealer to reconcile campaign completion with any subsequent valve-body or transmission work and current symptoms. A cleared warning or later key cycle is not evidence that a mechanical condition has disappeared.

The separate 2026 follow-up reviewed for the 2020 HD guide is not copied onto this 2021 target: the 26V083 summary identifies 2020 HD trucks and 2020–2022 half-tons, not 2021 HD trucks. That boundary prevents a false campaign assignment; it does not certify this truck as defect-free or remove the need for a fresh Canadian VIN inquiry.

Four further records need their own equipment checks

The remaining entries concern a particular accessory tire combination, two distinct restraint attachments and a power-release tailgate. Keep their operations separate on the service-history worksheet.

The 2021 Denali footnotes change the load assessment

These selected diesel positions come from the 2021 GMC sheet, in pounds. The standard Crew Cab 4WD standard-bed row lists 18,500 lb for each hitch type, but its fifth-wheel and gooseneck footnote limits Denali to 17,860 lb. Do not erase the trim footnote or apply it to an unrelated conventional column.

Payload and actual brake condition still govern a towing purchase

The standard Crew Cab 4WD standard-bed payload entry is 3,563 lb, with footnotes of 3,331 lb for AT4 and 3,162 lb for Denali. For Crew Cab 4WD long-bed trucks, the corresponding comparison figures are 3,597, 3,439 and 3,319 lb. These are manufacturer branch maxima, not the payload of an unidentified truck with accessories and passengers.

Use the individual labels and loaded measurements when assessing pin weight, axle limits and the intended trailer. A low-GVWR example cannot inherit the standard table's capacity. Its different rating also does not establish that it was abused or is mechanically inferior. Ask for the previous trailer and load details and compare the claimed use with records, not assumptions.

At the brake inspection, distinguish normal lining wear from fluid loss. The owner manual warns that topping up fluid does not repair a leak and can leave the system overfilled after worn linings are replaced. Let the technician diagnose the condition; do not use a topped-up reservoir or a reset percentage as reassurance.

Buying verdict and the limits of this review

A defensible 2021 decision depends on the applicable BPMV remedy, the diesel transmission history, sound brakes and a load plan matched to the actual trim and labels. Obtain a current Canadian dealer VIN result and an independent inspection before treating the truck as ready for towing. Any unresolved fire-related instruction or braking symptom takes priority over a routine road test.

This guide reviewed six U.S. query entries, the exact-year GMC matrices and selected pages of the 437-page HD owner manual. It did not recover and audit the separate 6.6L Duramax supplement, so it does not invent diesel maintenance intervals or emissions-system findings. No failure rate, lifespan, reliability ranking, seller inventory or price is inferred. The linked catalogue profiles remain editorial references, not active offers.

Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
