Confirm the engine before reading an oil chart

Record model year, Chevrolet or GMC model, engine code and whether the engine is original. Keep the VIN private in the service file. A used-truck advertisement or registration description may omit the engine code, and displacement alone does not identify the correct service publication.

Do not transfer this 2025 L5P example to LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, a different L5P year or a different installation. Likewise, a 3.0L Duramax or a GM gasoline-engine oil recommendation is not evidence for the 6.6L diesel. Use a two-column note: required category versus product category, then required viscosity versus product viscosity. Copy the complete designations, including letters, numbers and hyphens. This makes it easier to spot a catalogue selection error than a note that says only premium diesel oil.

CJ-4 and CK-4 are supported here; FA-4 is not a shortcut

Do not use additives or flushing to solve a selection mismatch

GM's reviewed supplement says not to add anything to the oil and does not recommend engine-oil system flushes. An aftermarket treatment should not be treated as a way to turn the wrong category or viscosity into the required lubricant.
