The 5.9 Cummins versus 6.7 Cummins decision is not one old engine against one new engine. The 5.9L spans mechanically and electronically different 12-valve and 24-valve generations from 1989 into the 2007 transition; the 6.7L begins in 2007 and has changed across emissions systems, calibrations, transmissions and RAM truck generations. Choose a verified 5.9L candidate when older-truck simplicity, repair familiarity and a lower-complexity ownership plan matter more than current output, modern safety and convenience features, or current tow-chart headroom. Choose a verified 6.7L candidate when the work needs a later RAM platform, documented model-year ratings, stronger factory output or integrated exhaust-braking and aftertreatment features appropriate to the actual duty cycle.

That is a use-case verdict, not a durability ranking. An original, inspected 6.7L with complete service and campaign evidence can be the lower-risk purchase than a modified 5.9L with uncertain history. The reverse can also be true. Price the complete truck ready for work—including deferred maintenance, emissions restoration where applicable, chassis repairs, tires, hitch equipment and downtime—before declaring a winner.

Normalized comparison: generation before displacement

Cummins documents the 5.9L 12-valve, 5.9L 24-valve and 6.7L as separate historical stages. Its 2016 ranges are useful generation markers, but “2007–present” and then-current output are not a specification for every later RAM. The January 2025 Cummins release is another boundary: its 430-hp/1,075-lb-ft pickup statement applies to the described 2025 system, while chassis-cab output is separately stated. The 2007 transition is not a clean model-year shortcut

Cummins describes the 6.7L introduction in January 2007, while the contemporaneous Dodge announcement says the 5.9L continued through December 2006. Used advertisements may compress this into “2007,” but a title year alone is not enough to identify the installed engine or all transition equipment. Match the visible engine identification, VIN/build information, emissions label, manuals and parts evidence.

Treat a swap as a separate engineering and documentation problem. A later engine in an older truck, an emissions-system alteration or a non-original calibration changes the inspection, parts, legal and insurance questions. This page does not validate a conversion or infer Canadian road legality.

Engines and power: compare exact published ratings

The 5.9L family ranges from Cummins' 160-hp 1989 starting point through later 24-valve common-rail applications. The 6.7L began with more displacement and continued through many output and powertrain revisions. Those facts explain why a later 6.7L may offer more factory performance, but they do not tell you which used truck accelerates, cools or tows safely today.

Record engine rating, transmission, axle ratio, pickup versus chassis-cab application and calibration status. Then confirm that the truck operates as designed under a qualified inspection. A dyno claim, tune file or badge is not a manufacturer rating, and more torque cannot repair insufficient payload, axle capacity, brakes, tires or hitch equipment.

Towing and payload: the complete truck sets the limit

RAM's 2024 Heavy Duty chart separates 2500 and 3500, cab, box, drive, engine, transmission, axle ratio and wheel configuration. It therefore demonstrates the right method: locate the exact row and keep every condition. It does not rate a 1990s or 2000s 5.9L truck, and its 2024 6.7L rows do not transfer to 2025 or 2026.

For either engine, start with the truck's certification and payload labels, original model-year towing information, hitch limits, trailer ratings and actual loaded axle and combination weights. Accessories, occupants, cargo and pin or tongue load consume truck capacity. A lower-output truck may fit a modest assignment; a higher-output truck can still fail a payload, rear-axle, tire or hitch gate.

Ride and daily use: newer is not automatically suitable

A later 6.7L RAM may provide quieter operation, integrated controls and newer cab, braking, safety and convenience systems. The 2025 Cummins release specifically describes powertrain, serviceability, cold-start and noise/vibration changes for that generation. Those are manufacturer design claims for the stated system, not proof of an individual used truck's condition or winter result.

An older 5.9L truck may suit a buyer who accepts older-platform noise, steering feel, ride, crash-era design, corrosion exposure and parts workflow. Test cold start, hot restart, city manoeuvring, highway operation, braking and parking fit. If short trips dominate, assess whether the exact 6.7L aftertreatment system and regeneration needs fit the route; do not remove required equipment to make the duty cycle seem compatible.

Fuel economy: measure complete trucks on the real duty cycle

Displacement, injection generation and an owner's empty-highway anecdote cannot establish which candidate will use less fuel in the buyer's work. Truck mass, axle ratio, tires, transmission, speed, payload, trailer, idle/PTO time, winter operation, regeneration and condition can outweigh an engine-family assumption. Older 5.9L and HD 6.7L pickups also do not provide a single directly comparable Canadian rated-consumption table across every year and configuration.

Use exact official data where it exists, then run a controlled candidate log with the same units, route, load and fill method. Keep litres per 100 kilometres separate from Imperial or U.S. miles per gallon, and price DEF separately when applicable. A fuel result cannot offset a failed capacity, safety, emissions or repair gate.

Emissions systems: verify what belongs on that truck

“Pre-emissions” is too vague for a purchase decision. Applicable equipment and rules depend on engine year, vehicle certification, market and present configuration. Earlier 5.9L applications and later 6.7L applications do not share one emissions architecture. A visible modification also does not reveal its software, engineering quality or legal status.

Photograph labels and installed hardware, scan supported modules and reconcile the findings with exact-year literature. Treat warning lamps, incomplete readiness, stored or pending codes, regeneration history and altered hardware as evidence requiring qualified interpretation. Reliability: compare evidence, not reputations

No reviewed primary source supplies a controlled, exposure-adjusted 5.9L-versus-6.7L failure rate. Transport Canada records show why generation and configuration matter. Campaign 2021691 covers a defined 2019–2020 6.7L RAM fuel-pump population; campaign 2023026 covers a defined 2021–2023 intake-heater relay population; campaign 2021336 covers defined dual-wheel RAM trucks across a broader year range. None applies to every 6.7L, and their presence does not make all 5.9L trucks safer or more reliable.

A widespread engine family does not guarantee every old harness, controller, body component or transmission part is immediately available. Used-market considerations: age and complexity create different risks
