GMC's official 2026 Sierra 3500HD chart publishes 29 conventional rating positions and 42 in-bed rating positions across gasoline and Duramax, SRW and DRW configurations. The printed range is 14,500 to 36,000 lb. The 36,000-lb endpoint belongs only to the Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD DRW truck with 43,900-lb GCWR, the Max Trailering Package and a gooseneck hitch; GMC prints 32,000 lb for fifth-wheel towing and 20,000 lb for conventional towing on that configuration. Match engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, rear-wheel arrangement, GCWR, package, trim and hitch before using a number. The U.S. chart does not certify an unseen Canadian truck.
Direct answer: 14,500 to 36,000 lb in GMC's 2026 chart
The maximum conventional rating is 20,000 lb. The maximum fifth-wheel rating is 32,000 lb, and the maximum gooseneck rating is 36,000 lb. The two in-bed maxima share a Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD DRW layout, but the 36,000-lb gooseneck result additionally requires the 43,900-lb-GCWR Max Trailering Package branch.
The 14,500-lb low point appears on conventional Regular Cab SRW gas and Duramax rows. A Sierra 3500HD badge, diesel engine or dually body therefore does not select a trailer rating by itself.
| Reference point | 2026 source configuration | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum gooseneck | Duramax Regular Cab long bed 2WD DRW; 43,900-lb GCWR; Max Trailering Package | 36,000 lb |
| Maximum fifth-wheel | Duramax Regular Cab long bed 2WD DRW | 32,000 lb |
| Maximum conventional | Published Duramax Double/Crew SRW and Duramax DRW positions | 20,000 lb |
| Minimum published position | Conventional Regular Cab SRW positions | 14,500 lb |
How to read the two-page selector
Page one is the conventional chart. Page two is the maximum fifth-wheel/gooseneck chart. Begin with the installed 6.6L gas V8 or 6.6L Duramax, then match Crew, Double or Regular Cab; standard or long bed; 2WD or 4WD; SRW or DRW; and the GCWR branch printed on that row.
Most page-two positions are one combined in-bed value. GMC splits fifth-wheel and gooseneck only on the two Regular Cab 2WD Duramax dually branches using footnotes 7 and 8. Those four printed positions must not be collapsed into one generic dually rating.
6.6L gas conventional: 14 positions
Every gasoline conventional position uses 26,000-lb GCWR. SRW Regular Cab is 14,500 lb; SRW Double and Crew Cab positions are 16,000 lb. Dually positions vary from 17,800 to 18,700 lb, so the 18,700-lb Regular Cab 2WD result does not transfer to another dually.
GMC publishes all 14 cab, bed, drive and rear-wheel columns for gas. The repeated values remain separate source positions because their vehicle selectors differ.

Duramax conventional: 15 positions and five GCWR branches
The Duramax conventional chart is sparse by design. Seven SRW positions use 30,000-lb GCWR, the Crew Cab long-bed 2WD SRW position uses 30,300 lb, and five dually positions use 40,000 lb. The Regular Cab 2WD DRW truck appears again at both 43,500 and 43,900 lb GCWR.
Both Regular Cab SRW positions are 14,500 lb conventionally. Every other populated diesel conventional position is 20,000 lb. Source dashes remain unavailable positions; they are not zeros and are not filled from an adjacent GCWR row.

6.6L gas fifth-wheel/gooseneck: 17 printed positions
The 14 base gasoline in-bed positions span 17,800 to 19,080 lb. GMC adds three trim-specific alternatives: AT4 or Denali reduces Crew Cab standard-bed 4WD SRW from 18,300 to 17,900 lb, AT4 or Denali reduces Crew Cab long-bed 4WD SRW from 18,230 to 17,800 lb, and Denali reduces Crew Cab long-bed 4WD DRW from 17,800 to 17,500 lb.
The source labels this page for both fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailering and prints one combined value for these gas positions. It does not authorize two invented cells or a hitch-specific split where none is published.
| Cab / drive | Bed / rear wheels | GCWR | Base in-bed rating |

Duramax SRW fifth-wheel/gooseneck: 14 printed positions
Eight base diesel SRW configurations span 21,460 to 22,420 lb. GMC then publishes six trim alternatives on the two Crew Cab 4WD rows. Standard-bed AT4, Denali and Denali Ultimate are 21,300, 21,200 and 21,100 lb; long-bed AT4, Denali and Denali Ultimate are 21,200, 21,100 and 21,000 lb.
Regular Cab long-bed 2WD SRW is the highest diesel SRW in-bed position at 22,420 lb. The 22,070-lb Crew Cab long-bed 2WD value belongs to its distinct 30,300-lb-GCWR row.
| Cab / drive | Bed / rear wheels | GCWR | Base in-bed rating |

Duramax DRW in-bed ratings keep fifth-wheel and gooseneck exceptions separate
Five 40,000-lb-GCWR dually positions use combined fifth-wheel/gooseneck values from 31,000 to 31,580 lb. GMC adds a 30,800-lb Denali and 30,700-lb Denali Ultimate alternative to the Crew Cab long-bed 4WD DRW row.
The Regular Cab long-bed 2WD DRW truck is different. At 43,500-lb GCWR, GMC prints 32,000 lb fifth-wheel and 35,500 lb gooseneck. With the Max Trailering Package and 43,900-lb GCWR, fifth-wheel remains 32,000 lb while gooseneck rises to 36,000 lb.
| Cab / drive | Bed / package | GCWR | Fifth-wheel | Gooseneck |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular 2WD | Long / DRW | 43,500 | 32,000 | 35,500 |
| Regular 2WD | Long / DRW / Max Trailering Package | 43,900 | 32,000 | 36,000 |

| Crew 4WD | Long / DRW | 40,000 | 31,000 combined | 31,000 combined |
Matrix accounting avoids double-counting combined cells
The conventional page contains 14 gas plus 15 Duramax positions. The in-bed page contains 14 gas base positions, three gas trim alternatives, eight Duramax SRW base positions, six diesel SRW trim alternatives, five 40,000-lb-GCWR diesel DRW base positions, two diesel DRW trim alternatives and four separately footnoted fifth-wheel/gooseneck positions on the two Regular Cab 2WD dually branches.
That is 71 printed rating positions, not 87 hitch cells. Combined fifth-wheel/gooseneck values are counted once because GMC prints one value; only the explicitly split footnote-7 and footnote-8 values count independently.
| Source area | Base positions | Alternatives / split positions | Printed rating positions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gas conventional | 14 | 0 | 14 |
| Duramax conventional | 15 | 0 | 15 |
| Gas in-bed | 14 | 3 trim alternatives | 17 |
| Duramax SRW in-bed | 8 | 6 trim alternatives | 14 |
| Duramax DRW in-bed | 5 combined | 2 trim + 4 hitch-specific | 11 |

Powertrain identity starts, but does not finish, the lookup
GMC's 2026 model material identifies the available 6.6L Duramax at 470 hp and 975 lb-ft with an Allison ten-speed automatic, and the 6.6L gas V8 with an Allison ten-speed. Those facts select the engine branch; they do not determine cab, drive, SRW or DRW, GCWR, package, trim or hitch.
Do not copy a 2024 or 2025 cell into the 2026 chart because the truck looks similar. This page uses only the exact 2026 manufacturer chart and preserves its dashes and footnotes.
Payload, axle and hitch limits still control
GCWR is the combined ceiling for the properly equipped truck and trailer. Trailer rating is separate and does not prove that payload, rear GAWR, tire capacity or hitch capacity remains after passengers, cargo, accessories and pin or tongue weight are loaded.
Use the individual tire-and-loading label, certification label, owner's manual, hitch documentation and loaded scale weights. The lowest controlling truck, axle, tire, hitch, trailer or legal limit governs; unused GCWR cannot override another limit.
Canadian verification starts with the individual truck
The complete configuration chart is GMC's U.S. publication. It does not establish Canadian-market equipment, certify a VIN or decide provincial or territorial compliance. Confirm the Canadian certification and tire-and-loading labels, build information, owner's manual and installed hitch documents on the actual truck.
For a service body, altered pickup or other upfit, obtain final-stage manufacturer and installer records. A factory pickup chart cannot establish the capacity of an undocumented completed body or hitch installation.
Source review and exclusions
GMC's two-page 2026 Sierra 3500 Trailering Charts PDF was opened directly from the current manufacturer towing hub. Both pages were extracted and visually reviewed on 14 September 2026: page one is the complete conventional matrix and page two is the complete maximum fifth-wheel/gooseneck matrix.
Every populated base position and footnoted alternative was reconciled. Source dashes remain unavailable, combined in-bed cells are not doubled, and the footnote-7 fifth-wheel and footnote-8 gooseneck positions remain separate. No Sierra 2500HD, Chevrolet, 2024 or 2025 cell, Canadian VIN status, reliability result or commercial claim is imported.
Common 2026 Sierra 3500HD questions
These answers summarize GMC's exact 2026 chart and do not replace the completed truck's labels or manual.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can every 2026 Sierra 3500HD tow 36,000 lb? | No. That result requires the Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD DRW configuration, 43,900-lb GCWR, Max Trailering Package and gooseneck hitch. |
| Is the fifth-wheel maximum also 36,000 lb? | No. GMC prints 32,000 lb for fifth-wheel towing on both top Regular Cab 2WD diesel dually branches. |
| What is the maximum conventional rating? | 20,000 lb on the populated Duramax positions other than the two Regular Cab SRW rows. |
| Are combined in-bed cells two independent ratings? | No. This page counts a combined fifth-wheel/gooseneck value once unless GMC prints separate footnoted values. |
| Does this chart certify a Canadian VIN? | No. Verify the individual truck's Canadian labels, equipment and documents. |
