GMC's official 2023 Sierra HD specifications publish 28 Sierra 3500HD pickup configurations and 84 hitch-specific trailer ratings across Duramax and gas, SRW and DRW branches. The matrix spans 14,500 to 36,000 lb. Its 36,000-lb endpoint applies only to the Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD DRW truck with the Max Trailering Package and a gooseneck hitch; the same row is rated at 32,000 lb with a fifth-wheel hitch and 20,000 lb conventionally. Match engine, rear-wheel arrangement, cab, bed, drivetrain, GCWR and hitch column before using any value. These U.S. tables do not certify an unseen Canadian truck.

Direct answer: 14,500 to 36,000 lb across the published matrix

For 2023, GMC publishes a 20,000-lb maximum conventional rating, a 32,000-lb maximum fifth-wheel rating and a 36,000-lb maximum gooseneck rating for Sierra 3500HD pickups. The two in-bed maxima share one Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD dually row, but they remain different because the installed hitch method changes the source limit.

At the low end, 14,500 lb appears in the conventional column for every gas SRW row and four diesel SRW rows. A 3500HD badge, Duramax badge or dually body by itself is therefore not enough to select a towing number.

How to select the correct 2023 row

Begin with SRW or DRW and the installed engine. Then match Regular, Double or Crew Cab, long or standard bed, and 2WD or 4WD. Keep the GCWR printed on that same row, and read only the conventional, fifth-wheel or gooseneck column that matches the actual towing system.

Do not move a maximum to a similar-looking truck. The 43,900-lb GCWR is limited to one diesel dually row, while the other Duramax DRW rows use 40,000 lb, diesel SRW rows use 29,700 lb and gas rows use 24,000 lb. GCWR is a combined vehicle-and-trailer ceiling, not trailer capacity.

Duramax SRW: eight configurations

The diesel SRW table includes eight complete body-and-drive combinations. Crew Cab models carry 20,000-lb conventional ratings, while Regular and Double Cab rows carry 14,500 lb. In-bed ratings range from 21,040 to 21,500 lb.

The Crew Cab 4WD rows also carry trim-specific source notes. On the standard-bed row, the 21,300-lb base in-bed value becomes 21,130 lb for AT4 and 21,010 lb for Denali. On the long-bed row, the 21,040-lb base value becomes 21,010 lb for AT4 and 20,890 lb for Denali.

Duramax DRW: six configurations

All six diesel dually rows are rated at 20,000 lb conventionally. The Regular Cab 2WD row is unique: its 43,900-lb GCWR supports a 32,000-lb fifth-wheel entry and a separate 36,000-lb gooseneck entry when the Max Trailering Package is present. GMC does not print that split on another row.

The remaining DRW diesel configurations use 40,000-lb GCWR and matching fifth-wheel/gooseneck ratings from 31,180 to 31,760 lb. The Crew Cab 4WD base in-bed value is 31,180 lb, with a 30,990-lb Denali maximum noted by GMC.

6.6L gas SRW: eight configurations

Every gas SRW row uses a 24,000-lb GCWR and a 14,500-lb conventional rating. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck values match on each published row, ranging from 16,410 lb for the Crew Cab long-bed 4WD configuration to 17,200 lb for the Regular Cab long-bed 2WD configuration.

Matching source values do not make hitch systems interchangeable. The installed hitch, its rating, the pickup's labels and the loaded axle weights still control the usable setup.

6.6L gas DRW: six configurations

The gas DRW table is not one repeated limit. Conventional ratings run from 16,240 to 16,800 lb, and in-bed ratings run from 16,120 to 16,800 lb. Four rows carry a conventional number that is higher than their fifth-wheel or gooseneck value, so the larger column cannot be substituted for the installed hitch.

GMC's Crew Cab 4WD footnotes narrow the 16,240-lb base conventional value to 16,010 lb for Denali, and the 16,120-lb base in-bed value to 15,890 lb for Denali. These are trim conditions on the published row, not extra configurations to deduplicate or average.

Matrix accounting and source payload context

The 84 trailer cells are the 28 configurations multiplied by GMC's three separate hitch columns. Repeated numbers remain attached to their source rows. The adjacent payload column is useful as a cross-check on configuration identity, but it is not subtracted from or added to a trailer rating.

Within the 3500HD rows, GMC prints payload figures from 4,013 to 6,523 lb for Duramax configurations and from 4,316 to 7,442 lb for gas configurations. Those are manufacturer comparison values. Remaining capacity on a particular truck must come from its tire-and-loading label, certification label and measured operating weight.

Powertrain identity does not determine towing capacity

The 2023 guide identifies the 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel at 445 hp and 910 lb-ft with an Allison ten-speed automatic. It identifies the 6.6L gas V8 at 401 hp and 464 lb-ft with the 6L90 six-speed automatic. These details select the correct half of the source matrix; they do not replace cab, drive, wheel, GCWR or hitch selection.

A later engine or transmission specification must not be backfilled into this 2023 table. Use the source-year powertrain and the exact completed pickup.

SRW, DRW and bed identity remain separate

GMC publishes independent SRW and DRW branches. The DRW entries use long beds, while the SRW branch also includes standard-bed Crew Cab rows. A standard-bed dually entry is absent and must not be invented.

The in-bed hitch also consumes payload and can change axle loading. Compare pin weight, passengers, cargo, accessories and hitch mass with the truck's remaining payload and rear-axle limits.

GCWR, payload and trailer rating are independent limits

GCWR is the combined limit for the properly equipped truck and trailer. Trailer weight rating is a separate comparison value, and neither proves that payload, rear GAWR, tire capacity or hitch rating remains available after the truck is loaded.

Weigh the truck in operating condition when planning a heavy trailer. The lowest controlling truck, axle, tire, hitch, trailer or legal limit governs; unused GCWR does not override another limit.

Canadian verification starts with the individual truck

This complete configuration matrix is from GMC's U.S. 2023 publication. It does not establish Canadian-market equipment, certify a VIN or decide provincial or territorial compliance. Check the Canadian certification and tire-and-loading labels, build information, owner's manual and installed hitch documentation for the actual truck.

For a service body, altered pickup or other upfit, also obtain final-stage manufacturer and installer records. A factory pickup-table value cannot be assumed to survive an undocumented body or hitch change.

The 28-page GMC Features, Specs and Options PDF was retrieved directly from GMC and hashed SHA-256 8150ea0295ee0c7ca74b41c92e3f3535e58dfddcb1c6f75ade8c5f24616d7115. Numbered pages 14 and 15 were visually reviewed on 14 September 2026. They contain the complete diesel and gas Sierra 3500HD branches; numbered page 16 begins the separate Sierra 2500HD optional-GVWR table and is excluded.

Every populated 3500HD conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck cell was transcribed. The source payload column and AT4/Denali footnotes remain configuration context, not towing arithmetic. No 2021 value fills a 2023 cell, and no 2500HD row, absent body style, Canadian VIN status, reliability result or commercial claim is inferred.

Common 2023 Sierra 3500HD questions

These answers summarize GMC's source matrix and do not replace the completed truck's labels or manual.
