The 2023 RAM 2500 deserves a configuration-specific review: a diesel Rebel is not interchangeable with a gasoline Power Wagon, and trailer reverse steering is not simply another name for the radio's camera display. Even the official towing files require revision control. This guide, reviewed on 15 September 2026, uses the later manufacturer chart, the exact-year owner manual and eight U.S. campaign entries to identify what a buyer should verify. It does not declare 2023 a best or worst year or convert campaign totals into a failure rate.

The diesel Rebel needs the later chart, not an eight-speed assumption

The later 2023 4x4 chart identifies the Cummins Rebel Crew Cab short-box row with the six-speed 68RFE, 3.73 axle, 9,680-lb GVWR and 23,100-lb GCWR. It publishes 14,920-lb maximum trailer weight and 1,980-lb estimated payload. Those are not the standard Crew Cab diesel row's 19,980 lb and are not a generic promise for every off-road-looking 2500.

Why identify the revision? The earlier official file prints 8HP75-LCV in the diesel Rebel's transmission cell. The later file corrects that cell to 68RFE and changes the Power Wagon section. Both were recovered from RAM, and the relevant pages were visually compared. The later PDF was created in April 2023 although the printed chart date remains 29 August 2022. Checking only the date printed at the bottom would miss the revision.

That source correction is not a report of a transmission repair, failure or product retrofit. The gasoline Hemi/eight-speed and Cummins/six-speed branches remain separate. Verify the candidate's build and identification before drawing conclusions from a seller's copied specification sheet.

Power Wagon payload contains a real unresolved source conflict

The later chart includes a conventional 4.10 selector and a second Power Wagon row whose selector is printed XE5. Both are gasoline 6.4L/eight-speed rows. The table below preserves the source's distinctions, including the unresolved payload entry, instead of treating an off-road trim name as a tow rating.

Do not silently repair the manufacturer's arithmetic

The XE5 row publishes 8,565-lb GVWR and 6,995-lb total base weight. Their difference is 1,570 lb, while the same row prints 1,730-lb payload. That is an unresolved source conflict. Neither number is certified here as the candidate's available payload, and no package meaning is invented for XE5. Obtain the truck's load label and manufacturer clarification rather than using the larger entry to justify a trailer.

The standard short-box diesel comparison also changes from the reviewed 2022 chart: the 10,000-lb branch is now 19,980-lb trailer/2,480-lb payload, while the 9,900-lb branch is 19,170/2,390. A seemingly small model-year change can matter near a limit, but it is not evidence of improved or worsened durability.

These are selected 4x4 completed-pickup examples, not the full 4x2/4x4 matrix or a box-off conversion rating. Payload and maximum trailer weight are not simultaneously available allowances. Account for occupants, cargo, accessories, hitch equipment and tongue or pin weight, then check GVWR, GCWR, axles, tires and hitch limits against actual loaded weights. The table cannot establish an unseen Canadian VIN's capacity.

Trailer reverse steering and radio images have different campaigns

14A / 63A / 23V059000 concerns the trailer reverse steering control module, or TRSCM, preventing rearview-image display when reverse is selected. The published remedy is a TRSCM software update. The record describes 63A as a population expansion of 14A and identifies earlier superseded recall numbers. Those relationships do not make every 2021–2023 model mentioned in the broad record a 2023 RAM 2500.

97A / 23V654000 instead concerns radio software preventing the rearview image from displaying. Its remedy is a radio software update. For a fitted truck with a missing image, require the technician to identify the affected system and the manufacturer to reconcile applicable campaigns. A generic radio-update receipt does not, by itself, demonstrate completion of the TRSCM action.

The exact 2023 manual labels trailer reverse steering as an if-equipped feature. The driver still controls acceleration and braking, while the dedicated knob changes the commanded trailer direction. It is assistance, not driverless backing. Preserve the distinction between a feature the truck does not have, a trailer that has not calibrated, an operating condition and an actual fault.

Use the 2023 owner's operating boundaries during inspection

The manual requires the trailer connection and wiring to be secured without obstructing the rear camera. It distinguishes calibration messages from a system-unavailable message, and notes that an open driver's door with the seat belt unbuckled can prevent activation. Ask the technician to identify the exact message before interpreting non-activation as a failed module.

While trailer reverse steering is active, Rear Park Assist is automatically disabled if it had been enabled. The manual also distinguishes blind-spot camera availability during the described calibration procedure from normal operation during automatic calibration. Those documented state changes must not be mistaken for proof that a radio recall has recurred.

The driver must keep watching the trailer and surroundings. The manual warns that continuing beyond the red jackknife indication may damage the truck or trailer. A safe demonstration should follow the complete instructions in a suitable clear area, only after unresolved safety issues are addressed; this buying guide is not a replacement calibration procedure.

The manufacturer-authored 2023 manual was recovered from an external archive. The cover identifies second edition V1, publication 23_DJD2_OM_EN_USC; selected printed pages 209–210 were visually reviewed. This is not an exhaustive review of all 468 pages or a full maintenance schedule.

Reconcile the remaining campaigns without assigning them to every engine

13A / 23V060000 concerns a Cummins intake-heater relay that can short with ignition on or off. For an affected unrepaired vehicle, the direction is to park outside and away from structures until repair. The 2023 phased mailing history is not proof of completion today. ZA3 / 22V835000 separately calls for a transmission dipstick and vent assembly replacement.

A documented candidate, not a year-wide verdict

The exact-model query does not resolve every engine, transmission, trim, build interval or Canadian campaign relationship. In particular, the 63B entry is not used to label every Cummins/68RFE truck affected, and 43D is not treated as permission to test a tire's speed limit. Match those actions through current manufacturer VIN information. A completed steering-column lighting action also does not automatically close the separate airbag-related action.

Start with current safety restrictions and traceable campaign work, then obtain an independent condition inspection and exact load-label assessment. Preserve evidence of servicing, leaks, starting and shifting behaviour, warning messages, modifications and previous heavy use. A correctly equipped, documented truck may suit the proposed job, but this research provides no lifespan guarantee, reliability ranking or measured failure rate. Catalogue profiles are references, not active offers or verified inventory.

Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
