The 2019 RAM 2500 combines a redesigned Heavy Duty platform with two very different powertrain paths: a gasoline V8 and eight-speed automatic, or a Cummins diesel and six-speed automatic. A used diesel assessment should distinguish the high-pressure fuel-pump remedy from a fuel-line inspection and the 68RFE transmission's separator-plate/software action. Canadian buyers also need the correct 9,900-lb-GVWR table rows rather than a generic maximum. Reviewed on 15 September 2026, this guide uses exact-year manufacturer literature and current U.S. campaign records without assigning a failure rate or certifying an unseen VIN.
The redesign does not make every Heavy Duty specification a 2500 specification
FCA's 14 January 2019 launch release describes new frames using 98.5-percent high-strength steel, revised suspension and a newly available eight-speed automatic with the 6.4L gasoline engine. The RAM 2500 retains a five-link coil-spring rear suspension, with available rear air suspension replacing the coils. These are design changes, not proof of a measured durability improvement.
The manufacturer-hosted 2019 fleet guide lists the HEMI at 410 hp and 429 lb-ft and the standard-output Cummins at 370 hp and 850 lb-ft. It explicitly identifies the 400-hp/1,000-lb-ft high-output version as a 3500 application. The exact 2500 towing chart pairs the 6.4L with the 8HP75-LCV eight-speed and the 6.7L with the 68RFE six-speed. Do not describe this 2500 as a 1,000-lb-ft/Aisin truck because a combined Heavy Duty advertisement mentions that combination.
Three diesel-related repair histories must not be collapsed
The current exact-model-year query includes three different diesel or diesel-transmission concerns. A receipt saying 'fuel system serviced' or 'transmission flashed' is too vague to establish the appropriate remedy. Match the candidate's VIN, component and work order to the current manufacturer instructions.
| Campaign | Specific concern | Published remedy to reconcile |
|---|---|---|
| Y78 / 21V880000 | The 6.7L Cummins high-pressure fuel pump may fail, causing a sudden engine stall without warning. | Replace HPFP, update PCM software, and inspect/replace additional fuel-system components as necessary. |
| V76 / 19V498000 | Selected diesel fuel lines may leak into the engine compartment. | Inspect the fuel lines and replace them when necessary. |
| W03 / 20V043000 | Pressure and heat in selected 68RFE six-speed transmissions may force fluid out of the dipstick tube. | Replace the valve-body separator plate and reprogram the PCM. |
Read the remedy, not a parts nickname or an old notification date
Y78 is not documented by a fuel-filter change alone. Its remedy includes a pump replacement, a software update and inspection of other fuel-system components with replacement where needed. The query's phased notification history is not confirmation that today's candidate received the work. Obtain the completed repair order and have a qualified technician investigate any stalling, leaks or unresolved warning messages.
V76 concerns fuel lines, not proof that the Y78 pump remedy was performed. Likewise, W03 identifies the 68RFE and specifies both hardware and programming. It is not automatically applicable to the gasoline truck's eight-speed transmission. A software receipt without the required separator-plate work does not demonstrate the full published remedy.
The U.S. summaries do not give this truck's Canadian eligibility, current completion status or a probability of failure. No pump-family nickname, aftermarket conversion, repair cost or predicted service life is inferred here. Before a road test, establish any candidate-specific restrictions with the manufacturer and resolve conditions that make the truck unsafe to operate.
The remaining campaign records are also equipment-specific
The fresh 2019 RAM 2500 query returned twelve records in total. V98 / 19V635000 addresses brake-caliper seals affected by incorrect assembly fluid; its remedy includes front calipers, brake hoses and bleeding. Z20 / 22V140000 is instead ABS-module software for the ESC malfunction indicator. A brake hardware repair does not document the separate warning-lamp software action.
W67 / 20V580000 concerns front seat-belt retractors. The later side-curtain inflator records, 25V010000 and 25V824000, have separate campaign identifiers and require replacement of one or both curtains as necessary. Do not treat a front-belt receipt as an airbag remedy or assume one inflator record automatically closes the other.
For visibility and body equipment, Z08 / 22V035000 expands the wiper-arm fastening action; W30–W37 / 20V191000 concerns a rear-camera image remaining after leaving Reverse on selected 8.4- or 12-inch displays. W24/W44 / 20V207000 concerns an accessory bed-step support brace, and ZB8 / 22V904000 concerns tailgate-striker alignment. Verify the fitted equipment and actual work instead of assuming every truck has every accessory. Twelve query results are not an owner failure rate.
Canada-only rows can change the load decision materially
The exact 2019 RAM chart separates general 10,000-lb-GVWR rows from rows labelled Canada only at 9,900 lb. All numbers below are pounds. They describe the specified source configurations, not the remaining capacity of an optioned truck.
| Cummins / 68RFE / 3.73-axle configuration | GVWR / GCWR | Maximum trailer / estimated payload |
|---|---|---|
| 4x2 Regular Cab Tradesman, 8-ft box; general row | 10,000 / 27,000 | 19,780 / 3,260 |
| 4x2 Regular Cab Tradesman, 8-ft box; Canada-only row | 9,900 / 27,000 | 19,780 / 3,160 |
| 4x4 Mega Cab Big Horn/Lone Star, 6-ft-4 box; general row | 10,000 / 25,265 | 16,520 / 2,130 |
| 4x4 Mega Cab Big Horn, 6-ft-4 box; Canada-only row | 9,900 / 25,265 | 15,520 / 2,030 |
| 4x4 Mega Cab Big Horn/Lone Star, RamBox; general row | 10,000 / 25,265 | 15,070 / 1,980 |
| 4x4 Mega Cab Big Horn, RamBox; Canada-only row | 9,900 / 25,265 | 14,070 / 1,880 |
A maximum trailer number is not spare payload
The matching 19,780-lb Regular Cab trailer values do not make the two GVWR rows interchangeable: their estimated payloads differ. The Canada-only Mega Cab trailer values differ by 1,000 lb from their corresponding general diesel rows. Preserve those printed differences rather than normalizing them from another source or assuming a larger cab still carries the headline rating.
RAM states that payload and maximum trailer ratings are estimated, rounded to the nearest 10 lb and mutually exclusive. Its calculation assumptions include passengers, options, hitch equipment and tongue or pin loading. A fifth-wheel hitch, occupants and tools consume the same truck capacity needed for pin weight. Confirm certification labels, actual loaded scale weights and all axle, tire, hitch and combined ratings.
The chart also contains box-delete rows with an explicit body-completion allowance. They are not completed pickup configurations and are excluded from these buying examples. No towing or payload figure here certifies an unseen Canadian VIN, installed hitch, completed upfit or current legal operation.
Use the quick-reference guide for context, not a blanket diagnosis
Mopar's exact 2019 quick-reference guide explains that diesel regeneration depends on operating conditions and that early regeneration can produce a hot or burning smell. It also describes DEF dosing/purging noises and variable idle behaviour, while directing owners to an authorized dealer when the check-engine light is on. These descriptions are not a reason to dismiss an actual fuel leak, transmission-fluid leak, stalling or persistent warning.
A technician should distinguish documented operating behaviour from a new symptom using the truck's condition and diagnostic evidence. Do not attempt to validate a suspected fuel leak by continuing to drive until it disappears. The quick-reference document is not the complete owner manual or diesel supplement; this review therefore prescribes no unverified oil, fuel-filter, transmission-fluid or regeneration interval.
A records-led verdict for a used 2019 candidate
The useful dividing line is not 'all 2019 diesels are bad' versus 'the redesigned truck is reliable.' It is whether this candidate has the correct powertrain, traceable safety work, credible maintenance history and enough measured capacity for the intended load. Request the Y78, V76 and W03 evidence where applicable, then reconcile brake, restraint, visibility and accessory actions separately.
After any safety restrictions are resolved, commission an independent inspection covering cold start, leaks, transmission operation, warning messages, suspension condition, tire wear and modifications. Record unresolved findings and missing documents rather than converting them into a numerical score. This guide does not rank 2019 against another year, promise a lifespan or present catalogue profiles as active inventory, sellers, prices or offers.
Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
