Ford's 2018 guide raised the 6.7L Power Stroke pickup rating to 450 hp and 935 lb-ft, 10 hp and 10 lb-ft above the cited 2017 figures, while retaining a configuration-heavy F-250 towing matrix. Ford also issued service guidance for a narrowly defined steering-oscillation complaint on some 2017–2019 four-wheel-drive trucks and recalled select electric-tailgate-release trucks under 19S48. Those records identify inspection lanes; they do not supply a controlled failure rate or prove that every 2018 truck is affected. The defensible buying decision still comes from the candidate's exact identity, records, campaign status, modifications, current operation and independent inspection.

Reliability verdict: 2018 is an evidence question, not a score

The reviewed manufacturer records justify neither a universal reliable label nor an avoid label. They define the truck's generation, exact-year powertrain output, configuration limits and two bounded service/campaign checks, but they do not report exposure-adjusted engine, transmission, steering, electrical or aftertreatment failure rates. This page therefore does not assign stars, rank 2018 against another year or promise a lifespan.

A stronger candidate has matching VIN/build evidence and labels, a verifiable service trail, stock compliant emissions and chassis systems, clean cold and hot operation, stable steering, functioning towing equipment, resolved applicable campaigns and a qualified independent inspection. Missing records, active warnings, deleted emissions equipment, unexplained tuning, steering symptoms, evidence of overloaded use or resistance to inspection should pause the purchase until the uncertainty is resolved.

What is genuinely different about 2018

The redesigned frame and aluminum-alloy body arrived for 2017, so 2018 is the second year of that architecture. Ford's 2018 towing guide gives the pickup 6.7L Power Stroke 450 hp at 2,800 rpm and 935 lb-ft at 1,800 rpm. The reviewed 2017 guide lists 440 hp and 925 lb-ft at the same engine speeds. The 10-hp and 10-lb-ft differences are simple source-to-source arithmetic, not a claim about wheel output, durability or the condition of a used engine.

Ford also offered the 6.2L gasoline V8, and the guide spans Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab configurations, two- and four-wheel drive, multiple wheelbases, boxes, axle ratios, GCWRs and GVWR packages. Verify all of those fields. A 2018 badge does not establish a diesel engine, axle, tow package or payload allowance.

Steering bulletin 19-2274 applies only to a defined complaint

Ford TSB 19-2274 covers some 2017–2019 F-250 and F-350 four-wheel-drive vehicles that exhibit sustained steering-wheel oscillation after rough pavement or an expansion joint above 72 km/h (45 mph). It attributes that defined condition to excessive lag or lash in the steering-linkage damper and tells technicians to follow a specific service procedure. The bulletin says it does not apply when the complaint does not match the stated event.

That document is a technical service bulletin, not a recall or prevalence study. Do not assume every four-wheel-drive truck needs its listed procedure, and do not turn the procedure into a driveway diagnosis. Review steering, suspension, tire and alignment work; note aftermarket chassis changes; road-test safely; and have a qualified technician diagnose any looseness, vibration or oscillation.

Tailgate recall 19S48 is equipment- and VIN-specific

Ford's 19S48 announcement includes select 2017–2019 F-250, F-350 and F-450 trucks with an electric tailgate latch-release switch. Water entering the switch wiring could cause unintended release. Trucks with a mechanical-release handle are expressly excluded. Ford reported 29,953 vehicles in the Canadian campaign population, but that count does not establish whether one 2018 F-250 is included or repaired.

Identify the actual tailgate hardware, inspect latch and wiring condition, review repair evidence and run the candidate VIN through Ford's current recall lookup. An old advertisement, trim name or population total cannot replace the VIN result. Cargo still needs independent restraint regardless of campaign status.

Powertrain, aftertreatment and modification checks

For a 6.7L candidate, insist on a true cold start, diagnostic scan and long enough drive to assess hot operation. Observe cranking, idle, smoke, turbo response, exhaust-brake operation, cooling, fluid leaks, warning messages, transmission behaviour and aftertreatment status. Reconcile oil, fuel-filter, coolant and other maintenance against the exact truck's 2018 Ford material and duty rather than importing a later Power Stroke schedule.

Deleted emissions equipment, undocumented tuning, oversized tires, lift components, altered steering parts, auxiliary fuel systems and heavy towing hardware all complicate diagnosis. They are not automatic proof of failure, but they require legal, calibration and workmanship evidence. A stock appearance is also not service history—verify both.

Towing evidence must stay attached to configuration and hitch

Ford's 2018 F-250 diesel conventional table spans published positions from 12,200 lb to an 18,500-lb gooseneck-marked entry. The footnote limits fifth-wheel use in that top row to the 18,000-lb hitch rating. Separate rows vary by axle ratio, GCWR, cab, drive, wheelbase, box, optional 9,900-lb GVWR package and Trailer Tow Package. The table records capability when properly configured; it does not reveal what a used truck previously hauled.

Inspect receiver and bed mounts, frame, rear axle, springs, brakes, tires, wheels, wiring and payload label. Ford requires trailer tongue or kingpin load, passengers and cargo to remain within rear GAWR and GVWR. Neither the 18,500-lb row nor the Super Duty family headline overrides those carried-load gates.

Body, frame and chassis inspection

The aluminum-alloy body and steel frame need different inspection questions. Check panel repairs, paint match, seams, tailgate fit, bed mounts and dissimilar-metal contact areas; separately inspect frame rails, crossmembers, cab mounts, hitch points, lines and the underbody for collision damage, deformation and regional corrosion. Ask whether repairs used materials and procedures appropriate to the body structure.

Road-test the truck empty under safe conditions. Check steering centring, brake feel, wheel-bearing noise, driveline vibration, transmission shifts, four-wheel-drive engagement, cameras, trailer connector, exhaust brake and warning systems. Equipment shown in Ford literature is not proof that a particular truck has it or that it works.

Record the VIN, market, build date, engine, transmission, axle ratio, cab, wheelbase, box, drive system, GVWR package, tire size, payload label and towing equipment. Obtain current Ford recall status, dated service and repair invoices, lawful ownership history, scan results, cold-start evidence and an independent diesel/chassis/body inspection. Reconcile kilometres and engine hours with the documented duty rather than treating either number as a universal life limit.

Price only verified work—tires, brakes, steering or suspension correction, leaks, overdue maintenance, emissions diagnosis, damaged hitch hardware or body/frame repair.
