The 2017 Ford F-250 began a substantially redesigned Super Duty generation, so its reliability cannot be inferred from an older truck or from the reputation of every 6.7L Power Stroke. Ford's exact-year material documents a new high-strength-steel frame, aluminum-alloy body, revised second-generation diesel and new towing technology. It also identifies two bounded checks: a steering-oscillation service bulletin for some symptomatic four-wheel-drive F-250/F-350 trucks and recall 19S48 for certain trucks with an electric tailgate release. Neither record establishes a failure rate or condemns every 2017 F-250. A defensible verdict depends on the candidate's engine, drive system, equipment, modifications, service and repair evidence, recall completion, current symptoms and independent inspection.
Reliability verdict: buy the evidence, not the model-year slogan
Treat 2017 as a first year of a redesigned Super Duty, not as an automatic avoid or automatic bargain. The year brought meaningful body, frame, powertrain and technology changes. That makes exact identity and repair history unusually important, but the reviewed primary records do not provide exposure-adjusted engine, transmission, steering or electrical failure rates. This guide therefore does not assign a score, rank 2017 against another year or promise a lifespan.
A purchase candidate becomes stronger when it is stock and legally configured, starts cleanly cold, completes an extended road test without warnings or unstable steering, has documented fluid and filter service, shows no unexplained cooling or fuel-system work, retains working emissions equipment, has a dry drivetrain and clean frame, matches its certification and payload labels, and has closed applicable campaigns. Pause when records are missing, modifications obscure diagnosis, an active symptom is dismissed as normal, or a seller refuses a qualified independent inspection.

What changed for 2017
Ford introduced the all-new 2017 Super Duty with a fully boxed frame made from more than 95 percent high-strength steel and an aluminum-alloy body. Ford said the material changes reduced weight by up to 350 lb while heavier-duty driveline, axle, suspension and towing hardware were used. The release also lists Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab forms plus XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum models. Those facts establish a redesign boundary; they do not prove the present condition of a particular body, frame or suspension.
The second-generation 6.7L Power Stroke was rated at 440 hp at 2,800 rpm and 925 lb-ft at 1,800 rpm in the 2017 towing guide. A 6.2L gasoline V8 was also offered, so a page about the 2017 F-250 must not silently treat every truck as a diesel. Verify the engine, transmission, axle ratio, drive, cab, wheelbase, box, tire size, GVWR package and installed towing equipment from original evidence.
The documented steering concern has strict boundaries
Ford TSB 19-2274 addresses some 2017–2019 F-250 and F-350 four-wheel-drive vehicles with sustained steering-wheel oscillation after rough pavement or an expansion joint above 72 km/h (45 mph). Ford associates that defined condition with excessive lag or lash in the steering-linkage damper and gives technicians a specific procedure. The bulletin excludes two-wheel-drive trucks and says it does not apply when the complaint does not match the described event.
A TSB is service guidance, not a recall and not a count of affected trucks. Do not reproduce the technician procedure as a driveway fix. During a supervised road test, note steering centring, looseness, vibration and response over representative pavement without deliberately provoking unsafe behaviour. Review steering, suspension, tire and alignment invoices, inspect for aftermarket chassis changes, and have a qualified technician diagnose any symptom rather than presuming the damper is the only cause.
Recall 19S48 depends on the tailgate equipment
Ford's 19S48 announcement covers select 2017–2019 F-250, F-350 and F-450 trucks with an electric tailgate latch-release switch. Water entering the switch wiring could cause unintended release; mechanical-release handles are expressly excluded. Ford reported that the action included 29,953 vehicles in Canada, but that population total does not show whether one candidate is included or repaired.
Inspect the actual tailgate hardware, wiring condition, latch operation and repair documentation, then check the VIN through Ford's current recall channel. Do not accept an open-or-closed conclusion based only on model year, trim, a population count or an old advertisement. Also secure cargo independently; campaign completion does not turn loose cargo into a safe load.
Powertrain and emissions inspection
For a diesel candidate, insist on a true cold start and scan before codes are cleared. Observe cranking, idle quality, smoke, warning messages, fluid levels, leaks, blow-by context as assessed by a technician, turbo response, exhaust-brake operation, transmission behaviour, cooling performance and aftertreatment status. Match oil, fuel-filter, coolant and other service evidence to the exact 2017 diesel supplement or manual and the truck's duty. A generic interval from a later Power Stroke is not exact-year evidence.
Reject deleted or defeated emissions equipment as a reliability shortcut. It creates legal, diagnostic, resale and calibration uncertainty and prevents a clean assessment of the factory system. Treat tuners, lift kits, oversized tires, altered steering components, auxiliary fuel systems and heavy towing hardware as changes requiring documentation and inspection—not as proof of abuse or proof of improvement.
Towing history matters, but capability is configuration-specific
The 2017 Ford matrix lists F-250 diesel conventional ratings from 12,500 lb to a configuration-specific 18,500-lb gooseneck entry in the conventional table; that row limits fifth-wheel towing to the 18,000-lb hitch rating. The separate fifth-wheel/gooseneck matrix contains many lower values across cab, wheelbase, drive, GCWR, tire and GVWR-package combinations. These are maximum loaded trailer ratings, not evidence of what a used truck actually towed.
Inspect the receiver, bed mounts, frame, rear axle, springs, tires, wheels, brakes and wiring. Compare payload-label capacity with occupants, cargo and measured pin or tongue load; Ford requires those loads to remain within rear GAWR and GVWR. A high family maximum cannot certify a Crew Cab short-box 4x4 or excuse a missing label.

Body, frame, chassis and road-test checks
The aluminum-alloy body changes corrosion and repair questions; it does not make the truck immune to damage. Inspect panel repairs, paint mismatch, seams, bed mounts, tailgate fit and galvanic-contact areas, while separately examining the steel frame, crossmembers, hitch points, brake and fuel lines, cab mounts and underbody for collision damage, deformation and regional corrosion. Confirm that any body repair used appropriate materials and procedures.
Road-test the truck empty and, only where safe and lawful, in a representative permitted state. Check brake feel, wheel-bearing noise, driveline vibration, steering response, transmission shifts, four-wheel-drive engagement, cameras, trailer connector, exhaust brake and every warning system. Driver-assistance and towing technology must be tested as installed; its availability in Ford literature does not prove a particular truck has it or that it works.
2017 F-250 buying checklist
Before committing, capture the VIN, market, build date, engine, transmission, axle ratio, cab, wheelbase, box, drive system, GVWR package, tire size and payload label. Obtain Ford recall status, service and repair invoices, ownership and registration history where lawfully available, diagnostic scan results, cold-start evidence and an independent inspection. Reconcile kilometre readings with dated records and use engine hours only as additional context when trustworthy.
Price the known work without inventing a market value: tires, brakes, steering or suspension correction, leaks, overdue fluids and filters, emissions-system diagnosis, damaged towing hardware and body/frame repair. Walk away when the remaining uncertainty is material and cannot be resolved within the purchase timeline. A lower asking price is not evidence that a questionable truck is reliable.

Is the 2017 F-250 reliable? The reviewed primary sources do not provide a controlled failure rate or universal score. It can be a defensible used candidate when its exact configuration, campaign status, service history, current operation and inspection support it.
