A 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD reliability assessment needs exact-year and exact-model boundaries. The U.S. NHTSA model result reviewed on 16 September 2026 contains three records: a narrow steering-gear production action and two related power-unlatching-tailgate phases. Chevrolet also raised Duramax output and paired both engines with ten-speed automatics. Those records support a configuration-aware inspection, but they do not establish a failure rate, rank the year or certify a Canadian VIN.

Identify the changed 2024 powertrain and completed configuration

Chevrolet's 2024 guide rates the available 6.6L Duramax at 470 hp and 975 lb-ft, up from the 2023 guide's 445 hp and 910 lb-ft. The 6.6L gasoline V8 remains at 401 hp and 464 lb-ft, but it now joins the diesel in using an Allison ten-speed automatic. A specification change is not durability evidence; it identifies the hardware and matrix branch that apply.

Record the engine, transmission, cab, bed, drive, SRW or DRW axle, trim, Max Trailering content and installed hitch. Confirm them from build information and labels rather than a badge. The steering action crosses gas and diesel HD applications, while the tailgate actions depend on installed equipment and production scope rather than engine choice.

The exact 2024 query contains three records, not four

The exact NHTSA result for the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 contains 23V549000, 24V060000 and 24V894000. The equipment-specific 26V530000 tire-and-wheel action found in the separately reviewed 2024 Silverado 2500 result is absent, so it is not transferred to this 3500 guide.

The two tailgate records are an initial action and a later expansion. They remain separate query records, but they are related campaign phases—not evidence that one candidate suffered two tailgate failures. A live VIN result and itemized repair records still control the individual-truck check.

23V549 makes steering inspection production-specific

GM's Part 573 filing covers certain 2024 Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks that may have received a steering-gear shaft from the supplier's suspect period. For Chevrolet HD production, the filing identifies 7 through 23 June 2023 and a combined population of 2,005 vehicles. That combined number is not a Silverado 3500 count or a failure-rate denominator.

The concern is an out-of-specification, improperly heat-treated shaft that may fracture where it attaches to the pitman arm. Dealers inspect the steering gear and replace it only if necessary; the filing does not prescribe automatic replacement for every 2024 truck.

Retain the inspection outcome even when no part was replaced. Separately inspect steering play, leakage, fasteners, linkage, alignment and tire wear. A completed campaign does not certify the rest of the steering system, and an unrelated complaint should not be relabelled as this supplier-window condition without diagnosis.

The tailgate actions share a condition but not a production window

Both 24V060 and 24V894 concern certain HD trucks with the QT5 manual gate, power lock and power release. Water can reach an unsealed electronic release switch, short the circuit and allow the gate to unlatch while the truck is in Park. GM says control logic prevents release in gear; until repaired, the filings direct owners to verify that the gate is closed and latched before driving.

The later filing explicitly expands 24V060 and covers a later QT5 production window from 1 August 2023 through 8 March 2024. Its remedy replaces the exterior touchpad switch assemblies with material intended to improve water resistance. Completion of one campaign number must be reconciled with the candidate's current VIN result.

Confirm RPO QT5 and inspect latches, cables, hinges, wiring, connector condition and water evidence. Keep collision damage, overloaded-gate damage and unrelated electrical faults separate from the recalled switch condition.

The severe-dust EVAP bulletin is conditional service evidence

GM bulletin 23-NA-073 includes 2020–2024 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD trucks operated in severe dust. It describes dust reaching the evaporative-emissions system, plugging the canister or vent solenoid and setting P0442, P0446, P0455 or P0449. The environment and listed codes are part of the application boundary.

GM's published correction is a customer-pay alteration adding an inline filter, and the bulletin identifies that filter as a maintenance item requiring periodic inspection. It is not a safety recall, a universal factory defect or authority to fit parts to every truck with an EVAP light.

Ask where the truck worked and retain the original scan and diagnostic result. Inspect canister, solenoid, hoses, routing and any filter installation. A clean dashboard does not establish that the condition never occurred, while a stored EVAP code does not prove dust was the cause.

Brake and trailer messages need physical and circuit checks

The exact-year HD owner manual describes front and rear Brake Pad Life percentages as estimates. They can be reset manually and disabled when aftermarket pads without wear sensors are installed. A high, missing or recently reset percentage cannot replace measurement of pads and rotors or inspection of calipers, hoses and both axle sets.

The manual also separates CHECK TRAILER WIRING from service or reduced-braking messages. A wiring alert can arise from the trailer connection or the truck-side circuit; the isolation sequence disconnects the trailer to determine which side needs service. Persistent service messages require professional diagnosis.

Trailer brakes may be partly functional or unavailable while a warning is active. Do not treat a cleared message, illuminated gain display or unloaded parking-lot response as proof of correct operation. Inspect the connector, ground, harness and integrated controller, then test the intended trailer safely.

The 36,000-lb maximum is one diesel DRW gooseneck branch

Chevrolet's 2024 matrix places the 36,000-lb gooseneck maximum on the Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD DRW Work Truck with the Max Trailering Package. The marked fifth-wheel rating is 35,500 lb, not 36,000 lb. Without Max Trailering, the comparable gooseneck result is also 35,500 lb. Hitch methods and package states must remain separate.

Other DRW rows are lower. The Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 4WD DRW row publishes 31,500 lb combined for fifth-wheel or gooseneck; the Crew Cab long-bed 4WD DRW row publishes 31,000 lb. A gas Regular Cab 2WD DRW row is 18,700 lb conventional and 18,760 lb in-bed. None of these values transfers to an SRW truck.

Use the matrix as a comparison point. The completed truck's certification, payload and trailering labels, installed hitch, passengers, cargo, pin or tongue weight and actual axle loads control. Where Chevrolet marks QG3 mud-terrain tires, the alternative conventional limit can be 12,000 lb.

A supportable 2024 Silverado 3500HD purchase is one whose VIN results, steering inspection, tailgate RPO and campaign records, gas or diesel powertrain, SRW or DRW branch, brake condition and trailer-control history agree. Obtain build information, current Canadian or U.S. VIN results appropriate to the truck, itemized invoices and modification records before assigning a condition grade.
