There is no defensible single best L5P Duramax year for every buyer. Official GM material supports three useful shopping bands: 2017–2019 trucks with the 445-hp/910-lb-ft L5P and Allison six-speed; 2020–2023 redesigned HD trucks retaining 445 hp/910 lb-ft while pairing the diesel with an Allison ten-speed; and 2024-and-later L5P trucks at 470 hp/975 lb-ft. Start with 2020–2023 when the redesigned truck and ten-speed fit the job without requiring the latest output. Start with 2024+ when 470 hp/975 lb-ft and the newest configuration are worth the acquisition cost and shorter evidence horizon. Consider 2017–2019 when the earlier truck, six-speed and candidate evidence are the better fit. Condition, exact configuration, repairs, emissions legality, capacity and support decide the purchase.
Best-year verdict by buyer objective
Choose 2020–2023 as the default comparison band when the buyer wants the redesigned HD platform, Allison ten-speed and documented 445-hp/910-lb-ft L5P without paying specifically for the later output revision.
Choose 2024+ when GM's documented 470-hp/975-lb-ft L5P, later truck equipment and a newer ownership position fit the assignment. A newer specification is not proof of greater reliability.
Keep 2017–2019 in the search when the earlier HD platform and Allison six-speed are desired and a candidate has stronger condition, history and support. No band receives an automatic pass.
Compare the three L5P shopping bands
The bands organize research. They are not rankings of failure frequency, repair cost or remaining life.

Verify that the engine is actually an L5P
Record VIN, Chevrolet or GMC model, model year, engine RPO, transmission, cab, box, drivetrain, axle, rear-wheel configuration, original market and emissions label. Photograph labels and connect replacement engines or modules to invoices and programming records.
Do not infer L5P identity from a 6.6L badge, exterior styling or seller wording. Keep pickup L5P evidence separate from L5D medium-duty applications and earlier LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM and LML material.
Pause when labels, build data, installed hardware and records conflict. Exact identity determines which specifications, manuals, bulletins and capacity charts apply.
Understand the current L5P specification
GM lists the latest L5P as a 6.6L/403-cu-in V8 with high-pressure common rail, cast-iron block, aluminum heads, four valves per cylinder, cooled EGR, SCR and DPF. It rates the engine at 470 hp at 2,800 rpm and 975 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm.
GM says 90 percent of peak torque is available from 1,550 through 2,850 rpm and explicitly compares the latest engine with 2023-and-older L5P versions.
Those current figures apply only where GM specifies them. They do not overwrite earlier ratings, certify present output or create payload and towing capacity.
Treat 2017–2019 as the earlier L5P truck band
GMC's original 2019 guide records 445 hp at 2,800 rpm, 910 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm and an Allison 1000 six-speed for the Sierra HD diesel.
This band suits a buyer intentionally choosing the earlier truck generation and transmission. It is not automatically inferior because later trucks have more ratios or output.
Give an earlier candidate credit for coherent maintenance, stock/legal configuration, satisfactory cold and hot testing, complete repair records and strong whole-truck condition—not for reputation alone.
Treat 2020–2023 as the ten-speed 445/910 band
GM's 2020 and 2023 GMC literature documents the redesigned HD generation with 445 hp, 910 lb-ft and an Allison ten-speed diesel pairing. That is a meaningful operating and configuration change from the 2019 six-speed truck without yet being the 470/975 specification.
This is a rational default band for buyers who want the later chassis and ten-speed but do not require the newest output. Verify the exact truck because cab, box, drivetrain, SRW/DRW, hitch and packages change capability.
Do not claim the ten-speed improves engine reliability. Inspect and budget the transmission as a separate system.
Treat 2024+ as the output-revision band
Chevrolet's 2024 HD announcement and GM's L5P technical reference document 470 hp and 975 lb-ft, with increased low-end torque availability and refinements relative to 2023-and-older L5P engines.
Choose this band when that verified performance, later truck features, warranty position and support justify the cost. The revision is an equipment advantage, not exposure-adjusted durability evidence.
Newer trucks have a shorter field-history horizon. Compare financing, depreciation, insurance, downtime, exact capacity and local diagnostic support rather than assuming the newest year is universally best.
Keep horsepower, torque and transmission separate
These are verified reference points, not a promise for a modified, replaced or unidentified engine. Use the candidate's year and configuration documents before making a comparison.

Do not turn service bulletins into a year ranking
GM 20-NA-197 defines a fuel-pressure-connector diagnostic path for specified 2017–2020 L5P applications. GM 18-NA-098 supplies coolant-leak diagnostic context for defined 2017–2020 L5P/L5D applications. GM 19-NA-108 addresses a particular 2017–2019 L5P cold-start condition.
Those documents support targeted questions for matching candidates. They do not establish prevalence, make every in-scope truck defective or prove later trucks are free from other concerns.
Rank candidate evidence: defined condition, measurement, diagnosis, repair boundary and comparable result. Bulletin count is not a reliability score.
Test true-cold and fully warm operation
Arrange a true cold soak where practical. Record ambient temperature, block-heater use, battery and charging state, cranking, warnings, codes, smoke, idle, leaks and time to stabilize.
Then test fully warm restart, cooling stability, fluid behavior, response and transmission operation under a safe condition appropriate to the truck. Preserve scan data and exact circumstances.
A pre-warmed presentation cannot answer cold behavior. A clean unloaded idle cannot prove fuel delivery, cooling or transmission performance under representative duty.
Compare fuel-system evidence, not pump folklore
Record filters, fuel source, supply-side findings, commanded and actual pressure, electrical tests, injector evidence, contamination observations and previous pump or injector work using the exact-year procedure.
GM's contamination guidance supports preserving a sample and inspection findings before cleanup. It does not say every pressure code, no-start or pump replacement comes from contamination.
Give a candidate credit only when complaint, measured cause, complete cleaning/replacement boundary and post-repair result align. A new-part invoice without that chain remains uncertain.
Compare cooling history by resolved evidence
For 2017–2020 candidates, GM 18-NA-098 illustrates multiple possible coolant leak paths and warns against assuming the visible low point is the source.
Across all bands, record level trends, pressure testing, residue origin, temperature and load, prior repair scope, refill/bleed process and comparable recheck.
A topped reservoir, dry driveway or replaced part does not prove closure. Do not rank a year from head-gasket, EGR-cooler, water-pump or radiator reputation without candidate measurements.
Keep DPF and emissions evidence code-specific
GM 16-NA-380 distinguishes degraded filtration, missing-filter and differential-pressure-line fault paths in defined diesel applications. Capture exact codes, soot and ash information, pressure/temperature evidence, regeneration history and upstream engine condition.
Regeneration may address soot under appropriate conditions; it does not remove ash, repair damaged filtration or diagnose fuel, air, sensor or engine causes.
Confirm legal original-equipment hardware and calibration. A deleted or unknown emissions configuration is not a best-year advantage; it changes legality, insurance, diagnostics and shop acceptance.
Inspect the transmission as its own selection gate
Identify the actual transmission, calibration, service history, converter behavior, cooler condition, shift data and previous repairs. The 2019 six-speed and 2020–2023 ten-speed are material truck differences, not proof that one engine lasts longer.
Transport Canada 2024637 defines a 2020–2022 diesel Silverado/Sierra transmission population and software remedy intended to detect excessive valve wear. Verify the Canadian VIN and retain the work order.
Keep campaign administration and current mechanical condition separate. A transmission finding matters to the complete purchase but is not an L5P engine failure.
Audit maintenance by time, kilometres, hours and duty
Retrieve the exact-year diesel supplement and owner manual. Record oil and filter, fuel filtration, coolant, transmission, transfer case, axle and emissions service by date, kilometres and engine/PTO hours where available.
Towing, idling, dust, short cycles, winter starts and storage can make odometer-only comparisons misleading. Fresh fluids establish a baseline but do not reconstruct missing earlier intervals.
Classify history as supported, partial or unknown. Prefer the candidate whose chronology and present condition fit the assignment, regardless of band.
Read major repairs narrowly
For engine, fuel-system, injector, turbo, cooling, emissions or transmission work, obtain the original complaint, codes and measurements, technician conclusion, part numbers, complete labor, programming, reused components and post-repair test.
A large invoice can strengthen a candidate only when it closes a coherent evidence chain. Expense alone is not proof of diagnostic quality or durability.
A replacement engine does not renew fuel, cooling, emissions, transmission, driveline, electrical, frame or body systems. Verify assembly identity, installer, cause and warranty.
Audit modifications as a separate configuration
List calibrations, injectors, turbocharger, pumps, intake/exhaust hardware, emissions changes, transmission programming, suspension, tires and axle changes.
Request objective, installer, part numbers, supporting changes, measurements and results. Confirm federal/provincial legality, insurance and shop acceptance.
“Stock,” “deleted” and “returned to stock” are descriptions until hardware, software and records agree. Unknown tuning can reverse an otherwise sensible year preference.
Verify capacity from the exact completed truck
Use door labels, axle and tire limits, hitch limits and exact-year Chevrolet or GMC configuration tables. Add occupants, cargo, accessories, hitch equipment and loaded tongue or pin weight.
GM's official tables separate cab, box, drivetrain, SRW/DRW, hitch and package conditions. A published maximum applies only to its stated configuration and assumptions.
Engine output cannot create payload, axle, tire, hitch or trailer capacity. Reject a configuration mismatch even when the engine band is preferred.
Inspect the complete truck around the L5P
Inspect steering, brakes, tires, wheels, frame, mounts, hitch, transfer case, axles, driveshafts, electrical system, cab, box and corrosion. Include plow, service-body, fifth-wheel and off-road history.
Separate engine, transmission, chassis and body findings. A strong L5P cannot make an unsafe or unsuitable truck reliable for the assignment.
Age, kilometres, engine hours and duty each reveal different exposure. Test the seller's description against records and condition rather than accepting “highway miles” or “never worked” at face value.
Match the band to the actual use case
For frequent towing, compare powertrain control, cooling, transmission behavior, axle, hitch, payload and support under representative load. For local light use, acquisition cost and complete-truck condition may outweigh the latest output.
For remote commercial work, recovery distance, diagnostic capability, parts timing and substitute capacity can dominate the decision. For low annual use, calendar service, storage and cold-start evidence matter.
The best band is the one whose verified equipment and evidence fit the job with acceptable margin and downtime—not the one with the strongest headline number.
Build a comparable acquisition budget
Separate asking price, taxes, inspection, transport, immediate safety work, maintenance due, diagnosed repairs, unresolved investigation, configuration correction and optional upgrades.
Use current written local scopes tied to the candidate. Generic repair allowances can omit diagnostics, related components, fluids, programming, taxes and downtime.
Compare the same ownership period and assignment. A lower-priced 2017–2019 truck may be the better value or an expensive interruption; a 2024+ truck may justify its price or simply add unused capability.
Verify Canadian safety status and support
Use Chevrolet Canada's current recall centre and Government of Canada sources for VIN and model-level research. Retain dated results and completion records; do not infer Canadian status from a U.S. filing.
Identify shops that accept the exact year, L5P configuration, transmission and modifications. Confirm diagnostic capability, parts path, scheduling and recovery.
No candidate VIN was supplied, so no truck is represented as included, excluded, open, complete or unaffected. A dealer locator is a discovery path, not a capability, timing or price guarantee.
Use a two-stage selection process
Stage one verifies engine/truck identity, legal configuration, capacity, safety and service path. Remove candidates that cannot be reconciled or cannot perform the assignment.
Stage two compares maintenance chronology, cold and hot operation, fuel/cooling/emissions evidence, repairs, modifications, transmission, whole-truck condition, price and downtime.
Classify each material area as supported, repaired and rechecked, unresolved or not assessed. Do not average a serious safety finding or unknown identity into a numeric score.
Preserve the evidence limits
Official material supports 445 hp/910 lb-ft with a six-speed in 2019, 445 hp/910 lb-ft with a ten-speed in the 2020–2023 HD generation, and 470 hp/975 lb-ft for the latest L5P compared with 2023-and-older versions.
It does not supply exposure-adjusted failure rates, a universal best year, repair-cost distributions, an exact configuration for an unseen truck, Canadian candidate VIN status or remaining-life forecasts.
Use the band to select correct evidence. Use the candidate and assignment to make the purchase decision.
L5P Duramax best-year questions
What is the best L5P Duramax year? Start with 2020–2023 for the ten-speed 445/910 combination or 2024+ for 470/975; choose the best-supported candidate for the job.
Are 2017–2019 trucks bad? No. They are the earlier 445/910 six-speed band and can be the right choice when condition, history and fit are stronger.
Is 2024 automatically more reliable? No. GM documents a specification revision, not comparative failure frequency.
Should 2017–2020 be avoided because GM issued service bulletins? No. The bulletins define scoped diagnostic paths, not prevalence or candidate condition.
Does ten-speed mean a better engine? No. It is a transmission and operating distinction that must be assessed separately.
Can the highest torque rating decide towing fit? No. Verify the exact truck's labels, configuration, hitch, axle, tires, payload and trailer limits.
