Confirm the F-Super Duty 6.4L application first
The supplement distinguishes F-Super Duty vehicles using the 6.4L from E-Series vehicles using the 6.0L. Record the private VIN, model year, build date, pickup or chassis-cab identity, completed-vehicle manufacturer, engine label and installed oil-system parts before assigning the table to a candidate.
Use Ford Canada's owner-manual lookup for the exact vehicle and retain the publication title, printing and pages. A registration year or hood badge cannot resolve an engine swap, altered oil pan, remote filtration or other modification. When the installed system differs, obtain its manufacturer and service instructions rather than rewriting the Ford base value.
The filter quart is already inside the total
Ford's footnote prevents a common arithmetic error. The stated 15.0-quart total already includes the filter's 1.0-quart share. Pouring fifteen quarts and then adding another quart for the filter would turn a documented total into an unsupported sixteen-quart assumption.
The same publication lists a period FL-2016 engine-oil filter, but that entry does not prove the filter now installed or approve every present-day substitute. Verify current fitment for the exact vehicle and inspect the housing. Filter identity, filter capacity, refill quantity and final level are related evidence fields, not interchangeable answers.
Service refill is not dry-build capacity
A routine service refill replaces oil removed through the normal drain and filter process. A dry-build value describes a newly assembled or fully emptied system. Ford's reviewed table supplies the service value; it does not publish a dry-build quantity or tell a rebuilder how to prime every passage and component.
Do not use the 14.2-L refill to fill a dry replacement engine, unprimed cooler, empty remote system or modified installation without the applicable service procedure. Conversely, do not add the nominal volumes of individual components and claim a new total. Follow the exact installation documentation and verify pressure and level through qualified procedures.
Measured drain volume answers a different question
The amount recovered during one oil change reflects the starting level, drain temperature, time, vehicle attitude, filter handling, retained oil, spills, sampling and container accuracy. It can be useful evidence, but it is not automatically equal to Ford's published refill capacity.
If a drain pail contains materially more or less than expected, preserve the measured amount and conditions. Recheck identity, prior service, dipstick validity and installed hardware before assigning a cause. A high recovery can include an overfill or contamination; a low recovery can reflect prior level, loss or retention. Capacity alone cannot diagnose any of those conditions.
Use Ford's warm, level and timed check
Ford directs the operator to bring the engine to normal operating temperature, park on a level surface, shut it off and wait at least 20 minutes so oil in the upper engine can return to the pan. Then remove the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it fully and read both sides, using the higher reading.
Record whether those conditions were actually met. A cold reading, a sloped work area or an immediate post-shutdown check can prompt an incorrect addition. After service, inspect for leakage, allow the required drain-back and confirm the level within the marked range. The check is part of the capacity answer, not an optional afterthought.
The two-quart dipstick span is a scale, not an instruction
Ford says the distance from MIN to MAX, or ADD to OPERATING RANGE, represents 2.0 U.S. qt (1.9 L). That describes the full span between the marks. It does not say that every reading below the upper mark requires two quarts.
Estimate only from a valid reading, add a measured amount and repeat the same procedure. Keep the amount and ending level in the service record. Do not calculate consumption from the span unless starting and ending readings, distance, hours, duty, temperature and measurement method are controlled. An undocumented mark is not a quantified oil-use result.
Do not overfill to match a container count
Ford warns not to overfill and states that oil consumption may result when the level exceeds MAX or the operating range. The proper endpoint is a valid dipstick reading under the published conditions, even when the quantity dispensed does not match a neat number of containers.
If the upper mark is reached early, stop and reconcile prior level, drain completeness, filter work, container markings and modifications. If the engine remains low after the documented amount, stop and investigate identity, leakage, the dipstick and installed system rather than adding an unbounded quantity. Never force an invoice total into the engine.
Oil type and capacity remain separate decisions
The supplement places oil performance specification, API category and temperature-dependent viscosity in a different section from the capacity table. A correct 15.0-quart amount can still be the wrong oil, while a correctly specified product does not establish how much belongs in the system.

Capacity does not identify fuel dilution, coolant contamination, external leakage, oil consumption, aeration or an internal fault. Track makeup oil apart from a complete service
Oil added between changes is makeup oil, not part of the next refill. Record each addition with date, odometer, engine hours, verified starting level, product, quantity and final level. Combining months of top-ups with the next change hides both the service amount and any trend.
Repeated additions deserve consistent measurement and inspection, but they do not automatically establish a failure, reliability rate or remaining life. Capacity cannot establish reliability or lifespan
