Direct answer: identify the truck, then open both GM documents
Record the model year, Chevrolet or GMC application, engine code, transmission, build information, current kilometres and engine hours. Retrieve that vehicle's owner manual and the matching 3.0L diesel supplement from GM's model-year library. The supplement covers diesel-specific systems; the vehicle manual retains other chassis, transmission, axle, brake, tire and body instructions. Neither document is a complete substitute for the other.
Next classify the truck's actual use under the wording in those documents and list every applicable trigger: distance, time, engine hours, oil-life or filter-life percentage, Driver Information Center message and condition. Perform or plan the item at the earliest controlling trigger. If the exact document cannot be established, leave the interval unresolved rather than borrowing a nearby model year.
LM2 and LZ0 are separate maintenance identities
LM2 is the first-generation 3.0L Duramax used in the 2021 supplement examined for this guide. GM describes LZ0 as the second generation and documents revised pistons, injectors, turbocharging and other changes. GM's 2021 Chevrolet/GMC 3.0L Duramax supplement is an original U.S./Canada document for that model-year diesel context. Its maintenance section directs owners to use the supplement with the vehicle owner manual and says gasoline-engine maintenance belongs in the owner manual. The values below are therefore labelled 2021 LM2 evidence, not current LZ0 instructions.
The same supplement separates normal and severe additional-service tables. It describes normal use as operating within loading labels, on reasonable roads and within legal limits with recommended fuel. Severe use includes heavy city traffic in hot weather, hilly or mountainous terrain, frequent trailer towing, high-speed or competitive use, and taxi, police or delivery service. Use the exact manual's definitions for the truck being planned.

Oil service follows the monitor and an annual ceiling in the 2021 example
For the 2021 LM2 context, GM says to change the engine oil and filter within the next 1,000 km/600 mi after CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON appears. It also says the oil-life system may not call for service for up to a year under the best conditions, but the oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and the oil-life system reset. These rules work together; the annual limit does not authorize ignoring an earlier message.
If that 2021 system is reset accidentally, the supplement directs service within 5,000 km/3,000 mi since the last service. Preserve evidence of the real last change rather than treating a reset as proof of new oil. For another model year, use its own instructions and exact oil specification; do not transfer the 2021 dexosD wording, capacity or filter number without confirmation.
The recurring 12,000-km inspection is broader than an oil change
At each 12,000 km/7,500 mi service point in the reviewed 2021 supplement, GM calls for checking engine-oil level and oil-life percentage, checking engine-air-filter life and status, checking coolant level, and visually inspecting for fluid leaks. It also calls for inspecting the fuel system for damage or leaks and checking the exhaust system and nearby heat shields.
Record each check separately. An oil invoice does not prove that fuel lines, heat shields, coolant or leaks were inspected. If a warning, low level, leak or damage is found, move it into a diagnosis and repair file rather than describing the finding as completed routine maintenance.
Air-filter service is condition and system dependent
The 2021 supplement uses engine-air-filter-life status and messages such as REPLACE AT NEXT OIL CHANGE or REPLACE ENGINE AIR FILTER SOON, and requires resetting the air-filter-life system after replacement. If the vehicle lacks that system, the schedule table and footnote control inspection and replacement. The reviewed footnote also says the time limit is four years, whichever comes first.
Dust changes the inspection plan: the 2021 footnote says to inspect at each oil change or more often as needed in dusty conditions. Do not publish one kilometre interval for all trucks from a difficult-to-read matrix or assume a clean-looking outer surface proves the element meets restriction requirements. Follow the exact manual and qualified inspection procedure.
Fuel-filter triggers must be kept together
In the reviewed 2021 LM2 schedule, the fuel-filter footnote sets replacement at the schedule point, every two years, or when the CHANGE FUEL FILTER message appears, whichever comes first. The same footnote says replacement may be needed more often with biodiesel use, excessive dust, off-road driving or extended trailer towing. Do not select only the longest-looking trigger.
Keep the filter message, elapsed time, distance, fuel history and duty in one row. A filter invoice should identify the application and date, and the corresponding system reset should be recorded. Coolant has both distance and calendar limits in the 2021 evidence
The 2021 schedule places the engine-cooling-system drain and fill at 240,000 km/150,000 mi, while its footnote says every five years, whichever comes first. That calendar condition matters for a low-kilometre truck. The supplement specifies a 50/50 mixture of clean, drinkable water and DEX-COOL for this application, but another year must be checked before purchasing fluid.
Checking level is not the same as diagnosing loss or completing a drain and fill. Record the system serviced, fluid specification, date, kilometres, work performed and any leak finding. Do not use a top-up receipt to mark the long-interval service complete.
The oil-pump belt requires generation-specific wording
The reviewed 2021 LM2 schedule calls for oil-pump-belt replacement at 240,000 km/150,000 mi or every 15 years, whichever comes first. That is a scheduled-maintenance instruction for the cited vehicle context, not a prediction that the belt will fail at that point or survive until then in every engine.
GM's LZ0 technical page says the later belt was validated to 200,000 miles compared with 150,000 miles for LM2. Validation distance is not automatically the scheduled replacement interval for every LZ0 application or model year. Retrieve the exact LZ0 owner literature and use its stated replacement instruction; do not convert a technical comparison into an owner schedule.
Extended idling belongs in the maintenance ledger
For vehicles covered by the reviewed 2021 supplement, GM says one hour of extended idle is deemed equivalent to 53 km/33 mi and directs use of the hourmeter when equipped. This conversion is explicitly source-scoped here; it must not be generalized to another model year unless that vehicle's own literature repeats it.
Capture total and idle hours at every service, especially for work, delivery, emergency, winter warm-up or stationary-use trucks. A low odometer cannot establish light use. When prior hours are unavailable, preserve the gap and have the service plan reviewed rather than inventing a universal kilometres-per-hour estimate.
DEF and DPF operation are not simple calendar replacements
The diesel supplement contains operating instructions for diesel exhaust fluid and the diesel particulate filter, including messages and warnings. Treat correct DEF, warning response and regeneration-related operation as system requirements, not as reasons to invent a universal DEF-fill or DPF-replacement interval. Consumption and regeneration opportunity vary with use.
Record messages, freeze or contamination events, added fluid and diagnostic work. If a warning persists or performance changes, use the exact manual and qualified service information. A completed fluid top-up does not diagnose a sensor, dosing or aftertreatment condition, and a bulletin does not establish a model-wide failure rate.
The vehicle manual owns the rest of the truck
The 3.0L supplement lists diesel-specific fluids and service, but expressly refers owners to the vehicle manual for other fluids and maintenance. Expand that ledger to include engine hours, monitor percentages, messages, duty classification, part numbers, fluid specifications and quantities, resets, findings and next triggers.
Keep original invoices and owner-entered work distinct. A receipt can establish purchased material, but only a clear record ties it to the truck and completed task. Build a catch-up plan for a used 3.0L Duramax
