All three terms describe vertical load carried by the truck, but the hitch location and trailer type differ. The actual loaded value belongs in the payload calculation.

Conventional tongue weight

A conventional trailer loads the receiver behind the rear axle. Use the loaded trailer and hitch manufacturer's information rather than one universal percentage.

Fifth-wheel and gooseneck load

These hitch systems place vertical load in the bed area. Pin or vertical load can be substantial and must be combined with occupants, cargo, accessories and hitch hardware.

Plan with measured numbers

Brochure dry weights may exclude options, fluids and cargo. Verify actual loaded weights and every truck, axle, tire and hitch limit.
