A fifth-wheel fit cannot be decided from a model badge or headline tow rating. Start with the exact truck and loaded trailer, then test payload, rear-axle, tire, hitch and combined limits together.
1. Identify the exact truck
Record model year, VIN, cab, bed, drivetrain, axle, SRW/DRW and installed towing equipment. Find the certification and payload labels on the truck.
2. Estimate loaded pin weight
Use a loaded scale value when available. Brochure dry pin weight excludes cargo, water, batteries, accessories and other changes that can increase the load carried by the truck.
3. Account for everything in the truck
Subtract driver, passengers, cargo, tools, accessories and fifth-wheel hitch equipment from the payload available on the exact label before adding loaded pin weight.
- Check GVWR and front/rear GAWR.
- Check tire and wheel ratings.
- Check hitch and mounting-system limits.
- Check the manufacturer model-year towing guide.
