Ford's manufacturer-authored 2017 towing guide separates the F-350 pickup into four rating families. Populated SRW conventional cells span 12,000 to 18,000 lb, while SRW fifth-wheel/gooseneck cells span 11,900 to 21,500 lb. DRW conventional cells span 12,100 to 21,000 lb, and DRW fifth-wheel/gooseneck cells span 12,100 to 32,000 lb. Those endpoints are not one truck's capacity. The 21,500- and 32,000-lb values are marked gooseneck ratings; Ford caps fifth-wheel use of marked SRW rows at 18,000 lb and marked DRW rows at 27,500 lb. Engine, axle ratio, GCWR, rear-wheel arrangement, cab, drive, wheelbase, box, tire and package notes, hitch method, physical labels and actual loading must stay attached. The adjacent 32,500-lb table cell belongs to an F-450 and is excluded.
Direct answer: four different 2017 F-350 rating ranges
The correct first split is SRW versus DRW, followed by conventional versus bed-mounted hitching. The lowest and highest figures across those branches belong to different engines, axle ratios, bodies and equipment conditions. A generic 32,000-lb answer omits nearly every selector that makes the Ford table usable.
Fifth-wheel and gooseneck share source tables but not always the same usable ceiling. When Ford marks a value as gooseneck, the separate fifth-wheel hitch cap still applies before payload, rear GAWR, GVWR, tire, hitch or loaded-combination limits are checked.
| 2017 F-350 pickup branch | Populated source range | Upper-end boundary |
|---|---|---|
| SRW conventional | 12,000-18,000 lb | 18,000 in selected long-box diesel cells |
| SRW fifth-wheel/gooseneck | 11,900-21,500 lb | 21,500 is gooseneck; marked-row fifth-wheel cap is 18,000 |
| DRW conventional | 12,100-21,000 lb | 21,000 is the highest weight-distributing diesel value |
| DRW fifth-wheel/gooseneck | 12,100-32,000 lb | 32,000 is gooseneck; marked-row fifth-wheel cap is 27,500 |
Identify the SRW or DRW selector family first
F-350 SRW uses ten body columns. Regular Cab is listed at 142 inches with an eight-foot box. SuperCab uses 148-inch short-box and 164-inch long-box branches. Crew Cab uses 160-inch short-box and 176-inch long-box branches, with 4x2 and 4x4 columns for each body.
F-350 DRW uses six F-350 columns: Regular Cab 4x2 and 4x4 at 142 inches, SuperCab 4x2 and 4x4 at 164 inches, and Crew Cab 4x2 and 4x4 at 176 inches, all with eight-foot boxes. The next printed column is F-450 Crew Cab 4x4; it is not a seventh F-350 configuration.
| Rear wheels | Cab and wheelbase branches | Box coverage |
|---|---|---|
| SRW Regular Cab | 4x2 / 4x4; 142-in WB | 8-ft box |
| SRW SuperCab | 4x2 / 4x4; 148- or 164-in WB | 6.75- or 8-ft box |
| SRW Crew Cab | 4x2 / 4x4; 160- or 176-in WB | 6.75- or 8-ft box |
| DRW F-350 | Regular 142; SuperCab 164; Crew 176; each 4x2 / 4x4 | 8-ft box only in reviewed pickup table |
| Adjacent F-450 | Crew Cab 4x4; 176-in WB | Excluded from every F-350 answer |
SRW conventional diesel top row across all ten columns
Ford repeats the 28,700-lb GCWR row under both 3.31 and 3.55 diesel axle headings. The table below preserves the weight-carrying and weight-distributing receiver values in all ten body positions. Tire footnotes remain configuration-specific even where the displayed weight is the same.
The SRW gas conventional rows are separate: Ford prints 19,500-lb GCWR for the 3.73 axle and 23,000-lb GCWR for the 4.30 axle, with configuration-specific values below the diesel endpoint. These are not default ratings for every diesel. Lower diesel GCWR rows populate individual positions from 12,000 lb upward, and package 68D is attached to selected lower-GCWR branches. A source dash in one row does not prevent a different exact row from applying.
| 28,700-lb GCWR SRW diesel configuration | Weight carrying | Weight distributing |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab 4x2 / 142 / 8-ft | 14,000 lb | 15,000 lb |
| Regular Cab 4x4 / 142 / 8-ft | 14,000 lb | 15,000 lb |
| SuperCab 4x2 / 148 / 6.75-ft | 14,000 lb | 15,000 lb |
| SuperCab 4x2 / 164 / 8-ft | 15,000 lb | 15,000 lb |
| SuperCab 4x4 / 148 / 6.75-ft | 14,000 lb | 15,000 lb |
| SuperCab 4x4 / 164 / 8-ft | 15,000 lb | 15,000 lb |
| Crew Cab 4x2 / 160 / 6.75-ft | 15,000 lb with tire notes | 15,000 lb with tire notes |
| Crew Cab 4x2 / 176 / 8-ft | 18,000 lb with tire notes | 18,000 lb with tire notes |
| Crew Cab 4x4 / 160 / 6.75-ft | 15,000 lb with tire notes | 15,000 lb with tire notes |
| Crew Cab 4x4 / 176 / 8-ft | 18,000 lb with tire notes | 18,000 lb with tire notes |
SRW bed-mounted diesel values keep their hitch caps
At 28,700 lb GCWR, Ford publishes configuration-specific SRW bed-mounted values from 20,400 to 21,500 lb across the ten body columns. Several columns also show tire-dependent alternatives. The highest cell is Regular Cab 4x2 at 21,500 lb; Regular Cab 4x4 is 21,100 lb, SuperCab positions run from 20,700 to 21,300 lb, and Crew Cab positions run from 20,400 to 21,000 lb.
Most of those high diesel cells carry Ford's gooseneck marker. The marker means the printed value is a gooseneck rating; it does not raise fifth-wheel hitch capacity. Ford limits fifth-wheel towing in marked SRW rows to 18,000 lb.
| 28,700-lb GCWR SRW diesel position | Published bed-mounted value | Preserved condition |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab 4x2 | 21,500 / 21,400 lb | Gooseneck-marked and tire alternative |
| Regular Cab 4x4 | 21,100 / 21,000 lb | Gooseneck-marked and tire alternatives |
| SuperCab 4x2 short / long | 21,300 / 21,100 lb | Short-box tire alternative; long-box tire notes |
| SuperCab 4x4 short / long | 20,900 / 20,700 lb | Short-box tire alternative; long-box tire notes |
| Crew Cab 4x2 short / long | 21,000 / 20,800 lb | Gooseneck and exact tire markers remain attached |
| Crew Cab 4x4 short / long | 20,600 / 20,400 lb | Exact tire and gooseneck markers remain attached |
| Fifth-wheel use of marked cells | 18,000-lb hitch cap | Lower than the displayed gooseneck values |
DRW conventional values by engine, axle and receiver mode
The DRW conventional matrix uses six F-350 columns. Gas rows publish the same value for carrying and distributing mode, while the diesel rows often permit a higher weight-distributing value. The 3.55 and 4.10 diesel rows display the same F-350 values despite different GCWRs; the axle and GCWR identity must still be retained.
The 21,000-lb upper endpoint appears only in selected diesel weight-distributing positions. Weight-carrying diesel cells remain 18,000 or 19,000 lb except the Crew Cab 4x4 position, which displays 21,000 lb in both receiver modes.
| DRW row | Reg 4x2 / 4x4 | SuperCab 4x2 / 4x4 | Crew 4x2 / 4x4 |

Complete DRW fifth-wheel and gooseneck matrix
Ford's six F-350 DRW columns are preserved below in Regular Cab 4x2, Regular Cab 4x4, SuperCab 4x2, SuperCab 4x4, Crew Cab 4x2 and Crew Cab 4x4 order. Pickup Box Delete is its own printed diesel row rather than a value to transfer to a pickup retaining its factory box.
Ford marks the diesel values above its fifth-wheel ceiling as gooseneck ratings and limits fifth-wheel use to the hitch rating of 27,500 lb. The ordinary 3.55 Crew Cab 4x4 cell is 27,300 lb and is not marked as gooseneck in the source; its neighbouring 27,700-lb Crew Cab 4x2 cell is marked. The F-450 4.30/41,800-GCWR cell is 32,500 lb, but it sits outside all six F-350 columns and is deliberately excluded.

Weight carrying and weight distributing are not synonyms
Conventional tables publish maximum loaded trailer weight for weight-carrying and weight-distributing receiver use. A higher distributing value depends on a properly selected, installed and adjusted weight-distributing system; it is not available merely because the truck has a receiver.
Inspect the receiver label and hitch components, verify compatibility with the trailer and follow the equipment manufacturers' setup instructions. The lowest truck, hitch, coupler, ball, shank, tire, axle or legal limit remains controlling.
Package 68D stays with its exact source rows
Ford footnote 3 identifies the optional 10,000-lb GVWR Package, code 68D, on selected SRW diesel GCWR rows. It is not printed on the 28,700-lb rows and must not be spread to every F-350 diesel configuration.
A lower-GVWR package is not extra payload or permission to exceed the certification label. Confirm the build record and physical labels before selecting a package-dependent row.
Tire notes are rating selectors, not decoration
Ford's SRW tables attach 17-, 18- and 20-inch tire footnotes to particular high-capacity cells. Some body positions show an alternate value only with a named tire size; others carry multiple tire markers beside the same displayed value.
Wheel diameter alone is not enough. Verify the exact tire size, load index, inflation requirement, wheel rating and original configuration, then use the individual truck's tire label. A replacement tire cannot raise a lower vehicle, axle or hitch rating.
Pickup Box Delete is a distinct DRW branch
The DRW bed-mounted table repeats the 36,000- and 40,000-lb diesel GCWRs for Pickup Box Delete. Those rows can differ by hundreds of pounds from the ordinary pickup rows and therefore remain separate in the complete matrix.
Box Delete does not prove the weight or rating of a completed service body. Record the upfitter, body, permanent equipment, final-stage labels and loaded axle weights. Do not assign a Box Delete catalogue result to a conventional pickup or an undocumented conversion.
Tongue and king-pin load consume payload
Ford's note uses 10% of total loaded trailer weight for conventional tongue load and 15% for fifth-wheel king-pin load. Those transferred loads, passengers, cargo and hitch hardware must fit inside payload, rear GAWR and GVWR.
At 32,000 lb, a 15% planning figure is 4,800 lb before occupants, cargo or hitch equipment. That calculation is an illustration, not permission: the exact trailer pin percentage and loaded truck weights must be measured, and any lower rating ends the calculation.
GCWR is a combination limit, not trailer capacity
GCWR applies to the loaded truck and trailer together. It cannot be used as the trailer number, and subtracting an unrelated catalogue curb weight can overstate allowance because the working truck carries occupants, fuel, accessories, cargo and hitch equipment.
Match the Ford trailer row first, then weigh the loaded combination and each axle. Verify truck GVWR, front and rear GAWR, tire and wheel ratings, hitch ratings and any jurisdictional limits independently.
Tailgate height and short-box clearance need physical checks
Ford lists a maximum tailgate height of 59.6 inches for F-350 SRW and 58.7 inches for F-350 DRW, measured from the ground to the top of the closed tailgate. The guide warns that other configurations can vary.
A weight rating does not prove clearance between a fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer and the cab, tailgate or box rails. Measure the actual loaded truck and trailer through the intended articulation range. Approved sliding or offset hardware does not change Ford's vehicle ratings.
How to identify the applicable 2017 row
Record the model year and confirm F-350 pickup identity. Then identify SRW or DRW, engine, axle ratio, cab, 4x2 or 4x4, wheelbase, box, conventional or bed-mounted hitch method, receiver mode, GCWR row and every package or tire footnote.
Use the VIN-linked build record, certification and tire labels, axle code and hitch labels, and note any alterations. Photograph the evidence and obtain loaded scale weights. If a selector is unresolved, keep capacity unresolved instead of selecting the highest row.
Canadian trucks need exact-vehicle evidence
The matrix is Ford-authored exact-year U.S.-market evidence. It does not certify that an unseen Canadian truck received identical equipment, options or ratings. Ford Canada's current towing resource is a handoff for locating appropriate literature, not proof that every U.S. table branch transfers.
For a Canadian candidate, resolve the VIN, certification and tire labels, original build record, axle code, hitch label, recall and alteration history. Where market documentation or the physical labels disagree with a catalogue row, the conflict must be resolved before towing.
Gas and diesel comparisons require the complete job
The 6.7L diesel reaches higher published endpoints in selected configurations, but engine choice also changes truck mass, payload margin, maintenance, acquisition cost and the available axle and wheel arrangements. Peak torque alone cannot establish the usable trailer or pin load.
Compare exact SRW or DRW trucks against the same loaded trailer, passengers, cargo, hitch and route. Keep condition and maintenance history separate from the paper rating; this page does not rank reliability or predict remaining life.
Source, revision and claim limits
The figures come from Ford's 2017 RV & Trailer Towing Guide, visually reviewed on printed pages 22-24 on 13 September 2026. The SRW tables are revised 18 October 2016 and the combined F-350/F-450 DRW page is revised 2 March 2017. Ford's official 2017 owner-manual index supplies exact-year operating and label context.
No value transfers to 2018, another F-Series model, chassis cab, altered truck or unmatched hitch. This evidence does not establish Canadian VIN status, reliability, failure rates, condition, inventory, sellers, dealer counts, prices, financing or offers.
2017 F-350 towing questions and conclusion
What is the maximum 2017 F-350 towing capacity? In the reviewed pickup tables it is 18,000 lb conventional, 21,500 lb SRW gooseneck or 32,000 lb DRW gooseneck, each in a different exact configuration. Is fifth-wheel capacity also 32,000 lb? No. Ford caps fifth-wheel use of marked DRW gooseneck rows at 27,500 lb, and marked SRW rows at 18,000 lb.
Does every diesel dually tow 32,000 lb? No. DRW diesel gooseneck cells span 27,300-32,000 lb in the displayed high-GCWR rows, while conventional ratings and gas branches are lower. Start with the correct table and selector row, then verify every physical and loaded limit.
