Start with the exact payload label
Payload varies by model year, cab, bed, drivetrain, trim and installed equipment. Read the label on the truck rather than using a model-family maximum.
Add every load carried by the truck
Driver, passengers, tools, bed cargo, added accessories, hitch hardware and loaded tongue or pin weight all consume available payload.
- Use loaded trailer values when available.
- Account for permanently installed accessories.
- Keep units consistent throughout the calculation.
Check axle and component limits too
Payload is not the only limit. Compare GVWR, front and rear GAWR, tire/wheel, hitch, trailer and combined ratings using the exact model-year documentation.
