RAM 4500 problems need to be assessed as chassis-cab issues, with the installed body and working equipment included. The most consequential documented checks span fuel delivery, oil-monitoring software, selected Aisin transmissions, braking and wheel hardware. Start with the exact year, engine, transmission and completion records; a RAM 2500 pickup problem list is not a reliable substitute.
Identify the chassis and the completed working truck
Collect the VIN, model year, build information, installed engine and transmission, current odometer and available hour records. Then identify the body manufacturer, body serial number and installed equipment. A service body with stocked compartments, a dump installation and a tow body place different demands on the same model family. Ask whether the body was fitted when new or transferred later, and obtain records for significant changes.
Create a short list of unresolved questions before the inspection. Does the truck have a current warning, a past roadside failure or a repair that is described only verbally? Does the seller's account cover both the chassis and the body? Separate those questions from ordinary consumables. This prevents an attractive body or a recently serviced engine from distracting from another material concern.
RAM 4500 issue map by application
The table is a research index. It does not say every truck in a year has each defect, nor does a year outside these headings receive a clean bill of health. The records describe selected issues; a current vehicle inspection must still address anything else observed.

Fuel-pump and oil-monitoring repairs answer different questions
Canadian recall 2021691 includes certain 2019–2020 RAM 4500 Cummins diesels. Fuel-pump failure can cause a loss of engine power; the remedy includes pump replacement, a powertrain software update and additional fuel-system parts when needed. Request the completed scope, particularly if a failure preceded the repair. A software entry alone does not establish that the pump work was performed.
Recall 2021360 is separate. It concerns oil monitoring on defined 2019–2020 diesel chassis cabs: insufficient warning of low oil can lead to bearing/connecting-rod damage and an oil leak with fire risk. Its corrective action is an engine-calibration update. That update should not be read as evidence that an engine with prior damage has been mechanically restored.
For the candidate, ask about oil-level checks, unusual consumption, leaks and any engine replacement. Request the diagnosis and assembly details behind major invoices. If an unresolved warning or abnormal mechanical symptom exists, have it assessed before committing to a work schedule. A recent maintenance visit can be useful evidence, but its scope may have been much narrower than a purchase inspection.
Aisin K1 concerns require transmission history, not just model year
The 8 May 2026 Stellantis bulletin 21-039-26 covers specified Aisin-equipped 2019–2023 RAM chassis/pickup applications built by 1 December 2022. For 2019–2021 vehicles, it applies only when a complete new transmission was installed between 1 February and 18 December 2022. It describes P0731-00 with lower-gear loss and a K1 clutch repair for the defined failure condition.
That replacement-history condition changes the buying interview. Ask an older-truck seller whether the gearbox is original and request the replacement invoice if it is not. "New transmission" can be a reason to investigate the applicable component history, rather than an automatic reason to stop asking questions. Have a shop verify the transmission and assess any engagement, shifting or warning concern; do not diagnose the K1 clutch from a vague report of harsh shifting.
FCA's separate 71A communication describes preventive snap-ring work for a defined 2022 population. Its instructions reserve RAM 4500/5500 work for BusinessLink dealers and direct symptomatic failures to the applicable TSB procedure. Confirm present applicability and service arrangements with RAM. A historic campaign is not a promise that any nearby shop can perform the job immediately or that all repair costs are covered.
Do not apply a 68RFE pickup campaign to an Aisin-equipped 4500 simply because both trucks use a Cummins badge. Keep a preventive campaign receipt distinct from repair after a loss of drive. Where symptoms remain, ask what the post-repair test established and whether the truck is ready for its intended use.
Brake warnings and hose condition are separate checks
Canadian 2024727 includes certain 2017–2018 RAM 4500s whose brake hydraulic control unit can fail, affecting ABS, stability control and/or traction control. The listed remedy replaces the unit. Canadian 2022613 instead covers rear brake hoses on certain 2019–2020 4500/5500 chassis cabs; the hose opening can be too small, with potential hose failure and reduced braking, and the remedy replaces those hoses.
A driver saying "it still stops" does not resolve an ABS or stability-control concern. Nor does a control-unit invoice describe the condition of all brake lines, friction components or parking-brake equipment. Have the current warning and physical system assessed, including areas affected by the body installation. Clarify whether the inspection included components hidden behind equipment rather than assuming that inaccessible areas were examined.
Wheel service and intake-heater status matter before collection
Recall 2021336 includes defined 2012–2021 RAM 4500s with dual rear wheels and flanged lug nuts. Incorrect published torque information could lead to over-tightening and damaged studs; corrective work includes inspection, replacement where required and updated instructions. Have the service provider use the correct current specification for the actual hardware rather than copying an old manual value.
For certain 2021–2023 6.7L RAM 4500s, Canadian 2023026 addresses an intake-air heater relay that can short even with the ignition off. The notice calls for relay replacement and advises parking affected unrepaired vehicles outdoors away from buildings and other vehicles. Check the candidate's status before arranging indoor storage or collection.
These notices also show why an inspection should not focus exclusively on whether the engine starts and the truck shifts. Ask for current VIN-based information and retain the supporting repair records. If the paperwork and physical configuration disagree, have the discrepancy explained rather than relying on the seller's general assurance that everything is current.
Body installation can create its own repair burden
RAM's January 2021 chassis-cab design notes warn that poorly distributed upfit attachments can concentrate frame loads even within overall chassis load limits. They also address fuel-fill routing and protection of chassis systems. This is installation guidance, not proof of a defect in every completed 4500 or a universal retrofit design for every model year.
Have an appropriate upfit specialist assess mounting condition, corrosion, signs of movement and questionable repairs against the relevant chassis and body documents. Include electrical supply, grounds, hoses and service access in the agreed scope. A body that operates once during a demonstration may still have an unresolved installation problem. Ask which equipment functions were tested and under what conditions.
Weigh the completed truck in its realistic working state and compare the axle loads and total with the applicable ratings. Count permanently mounted equipment and the normal stock carried in the body. An apparently suitable engine and transmission do not create missing load reserve. If the installation cannot support the recurring job, repairing an unrelated warning will not make it the right purchase.
Build a practical repair and acceptance plan
For each finding, identify the symptom or observation, what was tested, the proposed remedy and what remains uncertain. Separate immediate work from scheduled maintenance and optional improvements. Request estimates for the actual scope, including any need to remove body components for access. Do not assume pickup labour access or an advertised parts price represents the finished chassis-cab repair cost.
Before choosing a collection date, identify who can handle both the truck and its installed equipment. If the vehicle is essential for a service route, ask whether a substitute can carry the required tools and perform the work, not only transport the driver. A short promised repair can still disrupt the business if the specialist appointment or equipment transfer is unavailable.
- Check current VIN campaigns and obtain the completed-work details.
- Verify replacement engine or transmission history rather than treating it as self-explanatory.
- Have brake, steering, tyre and wheel concerns assessed alongside the powertrain.
- Inspect body integration and document areas that could not be evaluated.
- Confirm completed working weights and the job's actual load requirements.
- Resolve material findings or establish a supportable plan before acceptance.
RAM 4500 problems questions
Is every 2019–2021 Aisin truck included in the May 2026 bulletin? No. The bulletin includes a specific complete-new-transmission replacement window for those years, along with its other conditions.
Does an oil-monitoring software update repair worn bearings? It is not evidence of that mechanical repair. Review any existing symptoms and the actual work performed.
Can a truck below its total weight rating still have an upfit problem? Yes. Mounting design, local load distribution and individual axle loading need their own assessment.
Does this guide identify a universal year to avoid? No. It identifies documented application-specific checks and a way to assess the individual completed truck.
