The 2025 RAM 3500 diesel should not be evaluated as a 2024 Aisin truck with a different badge. Its factory sheet pairs the high-output Cummins with a new eight-speed and a 3.42 axle, while the exact-year owner manual specifies a different transmission fluid. The 2025 pickup powertrain is a genuine evidence boundary
RAM's sheet identifies 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft for the high-output pickup diesel, paired with TorqueFlite HD eight-speed hardware; the chart labels that transmission ZF Powerline. The diesel rows use a 3.42 axle. They do not offer the earlier standard-output/68RFE or high-output/Aisin choices. The gas 6.4L/8HP75 branch remains a separate application.
Cummins' 7 January 2025 announcement distinguishes the pickup's 430/1,075 output from 360 hp/800 lb-ft chassis-cab output. It describes revised fuel delivery, top-feed injectors, a new pump, changed air handling, glow-plug cold starting and top-side access to the oil and dual fuel filters. Those are manufacturer-described design changes, not controlled long-term reliability results. Do not transfer older repair eligibility or service locations solely because the engine is still called a 6.7L Cummins.
A fluid invoice must identify the new diesel transmission
The 2025 owner manual's 6.7L-diesel specification calls for Mopar ATF 818 or equivalent in the eight-speed TorqueFlite. The neighbouring ATF+4 entry is for the power-steering reservoir, not the new diesel gearbox. An invoice saying only 'ATF' does not demonstrate correct fluid selection; ask for the product and application.
The same selected page distinguishes axle lubricant requirements: its general SAE 75W85 recommendation has a SAE 75W140 exception for the 3500 12.0-inch dual-rear-wheel rear axle. Limited-slip requirements and the premixed-lubricant instruction also depend on axle type. Before towing, resolve the actual VIN status and obtain the replacement record if applicable. Separately inspect the trailer connection, wiring, brake equipment and compatibility. If trailer braking or lighting is unreliable, do not proceed with the trip while treating the recall as a cosmetic display issue. A displayed gain number does not prove the trailer is recognized
The 2025 manual says that, without a detected electrical connection, using the gain buttons or manual lever can still display the gain setting for ten seconds without showing the Trailer Brake Disconnected warning. If a fault is detected in the wiring or integrated module, that warning flashes. A number on the screen therefore cannot stand alone as proof of connected, functioning trailer brakes.
Gain ranges from zero to ten in half-step increments; zero means no trailer braking. Settings depend on the trailer and towing conditions. The manual requires working, adjusted trailer brakes and the correct trailer-brake type, with calibration in a traffic-free environment on a dry, level surface. Have this checked with the trailer manufacturer or a qualified technician. Connection recognition, appropriate settings and the 03D hardware remedy are separate checks, not interchangeable explanations for a braking complaint.
Ten diesel positions replace the older multi-transmission matrix

Do not turn maximum capacity or second-gear starts into a diagnosis
The 36,610-lb maximum belongs to the Regular Cab 4x4 dually row, not a carried-over 4x2 maximum. The sheet supplies one trailer-weight matrix with a fifth-wheel/gooseneck requirement above 18,000 lb. It is not a complete set of separate hitch-method ratings. Maximum trailer and maximum payload are mutually exclusive; actual labels, hitch limits and loaded axle weights still govern the candidate.
RAM also describes load-sensing selection of first or second gear for takeoff. A second-gear launch alone is therefore not proof of a failed first gear. Conversely, delayed engagement, warning messages or loss of drive should not be dismissed as normal simply because the transmission is new. Record the operating conditions and obtain unit-specific diagnosis, especially when the truck is intended for regular heavy towing.
A first-year purchase needs documented conditions, not an invented score
