On a 2024 RAM 3500, a cold transmission holding a gear can mean something different from an electronically commanded limp mode. The exact-year owner manual describes both, and separates the Aisin from the 68RFE. Meanwhile, the current model-year recall query returns two steering-column records with different fault mechanisms. Reviewed on 15 September 2026, this guide connects those distinctions with the actual 2024 Cummins configurations and load chart. It helps decide what to inspect and document; it does not turn a short recall list into a reliability ranking or declare a Canadian VIN clear.
Identify the diesel and transmission before evaluating a shift complaint
RAM's 2024 manufacturer sheet lists the standard-output 6.7L Cummins at 370 hp and 850 lb-ft with the 68RFE six-speed. The high-output 6.7L is listed at 420 hp and 1,075 lb-ft, paired with the AS69RC Aisin six-speed for 3500 pickups. The 6.4L gas/8HP75 branch is separate. Neither a dually axle nor a six-speed description alone resolves the diesel identity.
Record the build, transmission identification and relevant service invoices before a road test. The chart's power ratings establish factory output, not comparative failure rates. A higher torque number does not prove that the high-output truck tolerates neglected fluid service, overheating or an overloaded rear axle. Likewise, a dealer's use of 'heavy duty' is not a substitute for naming the actual transmission.
Cold operating limits are not the same as a failure diagnosis
The 2024 owner manual describes temperature-dependent shifting. For the 68RFE, top overdrive is inhibited until fluid warms; at −16°F/−27°C or below, operation can briefly be restricted to first and direct gears. For AS69RC, fifth and sixth can be briefly inhibited below 41°F/5°C; at −4°F/−20°C or below, operation may briefly be limited to third.
These are conditional warm-up behaviours, not a blanket excuse for every harsh shift or missing gear. Note ambient conditions, warnings, elapsed operation and whether the symptom persists when warm. A seller should not clear codes or pre-warm the truck to conceal the reported condition. Normal operation is expected to return as transmission temperature becomes suitable; persistent symptoms need qualified diagnosis.
Recognize the manual's separate limp-mode pattern
The same manual describes electronically triggered transmission protection and a different gear pattern. It also warns that excessive heat may change operation. Do not conclude that any truck in third or fourth has a particular broken internal part solely from the gear display.

Two column campaigns do not mean one interchangeable repair
The fresh 2024 RAM 3500 NHTSA query returned two records. B2A/D5A, federal number 23V799000, concerns the steering-column control module causing confused turn-signal/high-beam operation or defective signal self-canceling. Its remedy combines a software update with inspection and replacement of the module as necessary.
The second record, 24V199000 under manufacturer identifiers 14B/33B/34B/35B/36B, concerns an improper weld that can prevent the driver's air bag from deploying. Its stated action is inspection and module replacement as needed. A receipt saying 'software updated' therefore does not by itself document the second campaign's inspection or any required hardware work.
Ask the dealer to reconcile both identifiers against the VIN and completed operations. Verify exterior signalling during inspection, but do not infer airbag readiness merely because the signals work. These U.S. model-query records are not Canadian eligibility decisions, and the two-result count is neither a complete lifetime defect inventory nor a measured improvement over the 2023 truck.
Do not carry the earlier K1 bulletin forward by badge alone
Stellantis bulletin 21-002-23 Rev. B names 2019–2023 applications and specifies a build cutoff of 1 December 2022. It is not a document establishing K1 snap-ring coverage for every 2024 RAM 3500. Do not silently extend its scope because both trucks use an Aisin designation.
That boundary also does not prove that every later unit is immune to internal faults or that a replacement transmission has an uncomplicated history. If the candidate has lost drive, logged transmission codes or received a replacement, obtain the unit details and have the dealer identify the applicable service information. The specific earlier bulletin and the current VIN records answer different questions. This guide does not claim a complete 2024 TSB audit.

Preserve blanks and year differences instead of repairing the chart
The 2024 sheet prints 37,090 lb in both selected 13,500- and 14,000-lb-GVWR Regular Cab 4x2 HO rows with 45,000-lb GCWR. Do not replace one with a previous year's value or assume their available payload is identical. A different 13,500-lb-GVWR/4.10/41,955-lb-GCWR line has no populated 3500 trailer cell; it stays blank.
This sheet supplies one trailer-weight column, with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck requirement above 18,000 lb, rather than three complete hitch-specific matrices. Its load estimates and maximum payload are mutually exclusive. Match the actual loading labels, hitch, tires and axle limits, and weigh the intended loaded combination. No manufacturer maximum promises that a used truck remains mechanically suitable for repeated work at that limit.
A purchase decision built around evidence
A stronger candidate has a documented transmission identity, an explainable cold-to-warm test, no unresolved warning history, correctly scoped campaign completion and records consistent with its past towing duty. Have an independent technician review leaks, shifting, cooling, wheel and brake condition, modifications and stored faults. A high tow rating cannot compensate for missing service history.
