The most useful 2023 RAM 3500 buying question is not whether every Aisin transmission is bad. It is whether this pickup has the specified transmission, build date, symptoms and documented repair history. A manufacturer bulletin supplies that distinction, while the exact-year recall query introduces different transmission and steering concerns that must not be merged. Reviewed on 15 September 2026, this guide combines those records with selected 2023 load-chart and owner-manual evidence. It is an evidence-based inspection framework, not a failure-rate calculation, Canadian VIN clearance or prediction of remaining service life.
Start with the Aisin identification and build date
Stellantis bulletin 21-002-23 Rev. B, dated 19 August 2023, includes D2 RAM 3500 pickups built on or before 1 December 2022 with the specified Aisin transmission. For a diesel pickup, check AS69RC and sales code DF2. The same document also covers other chassis and AS66RC/DF3 applications; those entries do not make a 68RFE pickup eligible. A 2023 model-year badge is not a substitute for the actual production date.
The bulletin describes P0731-00 and loss of torque transfer through gears 1–4 when a K1 clutch snap ring dislodges. Fifth and reverse may remain available; that is a diagnostic symptom, not permission to keep towing. Arrange qualified diagnosis and recovery if drive is lost. The historical RSU 23-065 portion was restricted to unsold DF2 VINs and had a stated expiry; do not promise a current free repair from this document alone.
Separate the K1 bulletin from recall 63B
The 2023 RAM 3500 NHTSA query returns 24V413000, manufacturer campaign 63B. Its stated problem is an insufficient weld in a transmission control unit, allowing fluid onto electrical components and risking loss of drive or Park. Its remedy specifies replacement of the valve body and control unit. That is not the K1 snap-ring repair described above.
The model-level recall summary does not identify the transmission model. It cannot establish that every Cummins/Aisin pickup needs 63B, or that a K1 invoice closes it. Ask a dealer to resolve the actual VIN and installed unit, then compare the work order with the required operation. Conversely, an absence of an open safety recall does not prove that every relevant service bulletin was checked. Keep the two evidence streams separate rather than adding them into an invented transmission-failure percentage.
Heater-relay precautions remain a VIN-level priority
Campaign 13A/23V060000 includes certain 2021–2023 Cummins-equipped trucks. The documented concern is an electrical short in the heater-grid relay with the ignition either on or off. The remedy record calls for relay replacement and advises affected owners to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is completed.
The record describes a phased rollout beginning with the 2023 model year and explicitly supersedes 21V798. Historical rollout dates do not establish this truck's current repair status. Obtain the VIN result and completed relay-replacement record. The relay action is not evidence of grid-heater fastener-ingestion frequency, nor a reason to treat an emissions-system deletion as an approved repair. A seller's statement that the truck starts normally does not answer an ignition-off electrical-fire concern.
Two steering-column campaigns require different evidence
The exact-year query returned five records, not five independent failures on each pickup. Two involve the steering-column control module but describe different faults and repair instructions. Read the operation on the invoice rather than accepting a generic 'column recall complete' entry.
| Campaign | Documented issue | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| B2A/D5A — 23V799000 | Turn signals/high beams can be confused; self-canceling may malfunction. | SCCM software update plus inspection/replacement as necessary. |
| 14B/33B/34B/35B/36B — 24V199000 | An improper weld can prevent the driver's air bag from deploying. | Applicable VIN determination and SCCM inspection/replacement record. |
| 97A — 23V654000 | The 3500 entry explicitly names Cab Chassis below 10,000-lb GVWR. | Scope exclusion: do not assign this radio action to every 3500 pickup. |
Confirm actual weight capability before interpreting work history
These are selected Regular Cab ST eight-foot-box entries from Stellantis's 2023 4x2 and 4x4 pickup charts, recovered in the RV Safety archive. SO denotes the standard-output Cummins/68RFE branch and HO the high-output Cummins/Aisin branch. Every weight below is pounds. They are separate build alternatives, not capacities that can be combined.
| Drive / diesel / rear wheels / axle | GVWR / GCWR | Chart payload | Max trailer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4x2 / SO / SRW / 3.73 | 11,500 / 28,300 | 4,610 | 20,940 |
| 4x2 / HO / SRW / 3.73 | 11,500 / 34,630 | 4,490 | 26,800 |
| 4x2 / HO / DRW / 4.10 | 14,000 / 45,000 | 6,560 | 37,090 |
| 4x2 / HO / DRW / 4.10 | 13,500 / 45,000 | 6,060 | 35,250 |
| 4x4 / HO / SRW / 3.73 | 11,800 / 34,540 | 4,360 | 25,950 |
| 4x4 / HO / DRW / 4.10 | 14,000 / 43,000 | 6,120 | 34,650 |
| 4x4 / HO / DRW / 4.10 | 13,500 / 43,000 | 5,620 | 34,300 |
The 2023 rows are not interchangeable with the previous year
The 13,500-lb-GVWR 4x4 HO dually example is printed at 34,300 lb maximum trailer in the recovered 2023 chart. Do not carry over the 34,320-lb value from the corresponding reviewed 2022 example. Equally, the 26,800-lb 4x2 HO single-rear-wheel position must remain tied to its stated cab, box and axle. Retaining such distinctions matters more than repeating the largest number.
A chart maximum is not a measurement of the used truck's available payload. Compare its certification and loading labels with a loaded scale ticket, including occupants, hitch and trailer pin load. The charts have one maximum-trailer column with hitch-limit notes, not three complete conventional/fifth-wheel/gooseneck matrices. Use the established year-specific towing guide for wider configuration coverage; neither guide converts towing capacity into a durability score.
Use Trailer Light Check without mistaking it for a brake test
The 2023 owner manual's Trailer Light Check runs a timed exterior-light sequence for up to five minutes. It requires the Trailer Tow Package, a stationary vehicle in Park, ignition in ACC or RUN and remote start inactive. Applied brakes, signals or hazards can prevent or cancel the sequence. An interrupted test is therefore not automatically a broken trailer module.
Walk around and observe the lamps and connector rather than watching only the cluster. This is a lighting check, not proof of trailer braking, hitch integrity or load compliance. The same manual advises Tow/Haul or a lower electronic range when frequent shifting occurs while towing. These selected operating pages help structure an inspection but are not a substitute for the full maintenance schedule or a workshop diagnosis.
A conditional buying verdict, not a best-year ranking
Prefer the candidate whose build information, transmission identity, fault history and itemized repairs agree with each other. For an early-build Aisin truck, an unexplained loss-of-drive episode or an undocumented transmission replacement warrants a specialist review before committing to a towing role. For any candidate, separately reconcile the relay, steering and application-specific campaign records, and test the equipment actually fitted.
The recovered sources do not supply a controlled owner sample, exposure-adjusted failure rate, Canadian fleet ranking or dependable mileage-to-failure estimate. The U.S. model query is not Canadian VIN clearance; use Mopar Canada's lookup and dealer records for that decision. Manufacturer-authored documents here are externally archived, and the reviewed pages are selected rather than a complete service-literature audit. The linked commercial area contains disclosed catalogue profiles, not verified active offers; no seller availability or asking price is inferred.
Evidence note: manufacturer documents establish the specific facts and applications cited. Buying workflows and cost scenarios are DieselTrucks.ca editorial guidance. These pages do not publish measured failure rates or confirm the condition, recall status or capacity of a particular truck.
