A 2025 GMC Sierra 3500HD reliability review starts with powertrain and tank configuration. The exact U.S. NHTSA model query reviewed on 16 September 2026 returns one action for gasoline trucks with dual fuel tanks. It does not return the accessory tire-and-wheel action found in the separately researched 2025 Sierra 2500 query. GMC's 2025 literature and a revised transmission bulletin add useful inspection boundaries, but none of these sources supplies a failure rate, year ranking or Canadian VIN decision.

Start with engine, tank and completed-truck identity

GMC's 2025 fleet literature lists the 6.6L gasoline V8 at 401 hp and 464 lb-ft and the available 6.6L Duramax at 470 hp and 975 lb-ft. Both use an Allison ten-speed automatic. Those headline specifications do not identify the fuel-tank arrangement, rear axle, SRW or DRW chassis, cab, trim or installed body.

Record RPOs and build information for the engine and fuel system, then confirm cab, bed, drive, axle and hitch. The exact safety action reviewed here requires both the L8T gasoline engine and N2N dual fuel tanks. A diesel, a gasoline truck without N2N or a chassis carrying an added aftermarket tank should not be treated as the same configuration without a VIN result.

The exact 2025 query has one configuration-specific record

The NHTSA query for make GMC, model Sierra 3500 and model year 2025 returns 26V129000 / N262544420. It identifies certain 2025–2026 Sierra 3500 vehicles with gasoline engines and dual fuel tanks. The response says involved VINs became searchable on 5 March 2026 and owner letters were mailed 8 April 2026.

The exact 2025 Sierra 2500 query has a different 26V530000 accessory tire-and-wheel record. It is absent from the 3500 result and is not imported here. Query differences are evidence boundaries, not proof that any individual vehicle is complete or unaffected.

26V129 is a gasoline dual-tank fuel-transfer action

The NHTSA record says the rear fuel pump may not transfer enough fuel to the front tank, which can cause an engine stall and increase crash risk. The remedy is an engine-control-module update performed by a dealer or delivered over the air, free of charge. The response does not prescribe rear-pump replacement for every involved truck.

Confirm L8T and N2N from build data, obtain the current VIN result and document the update method and completion date. An OTA offer, notification or downloaded package is not the same as a verified completed calibration. Preserve scan information and investigate any continued stall, gauge or transfer complaint rather than assuming the software action resolved an unrelated fault.

Do not apply this record to the Duramax or use it as a diesel fuel-system warning. Likewise, dual tanks on an upfitted chassis need their own installation and service evidence. The U.S. query does not certify Canadian inclusion, campaign availability or completion.

21-NA-238 requires a verified front-cover leak

GM bulletin 21-NA-238 version 9 adds the 2025 model year and covers Sierra 2500HD/3500HD applications with L5P or L8T engines and MGM, MGU or MKM transmissions. The condition is transmission fluid reported near the bellhousing inspection cover; a rolled or damaged automatic-transmission case front-cover seal is a possible cause.

The correction applies only after the leak is verified at that seal: replace the front-cover seal and torque-converter fluid seal using service information. The bulletin does not call for automatic transmission replacement, prove that every bellhousing-area fluid trace is transmission fluid or establish how frequently the condition occurs.

Clean and trace the leak, identify fluid type and document its origin before approving work. Separate engine oil, transmission cooler lines, transfer-case fluid and residue from prior service. GM explicitly writes these bulletins for professional technicians and says not to assume applicability.

4WD indicator completion matters more than the button press

The exact-year HD owner manual distinguishes an automatic two-speed transfer case from a separate part-time two-speed unit. On the automatic system, AUTO can distribute power based on conditions; 4HI and 4LO remain distinct modes. The manual says a request occurs after the button is released and the indicator flashes until the shift completes.

For 4LO, the vehicle must be stopped or moving below 5 km/h, with the transmission in Neutral; the manual says 1.6–3.2 km/h is best. It warns that selecting a transmission gear before the requested mode indicator stops flashing can damage the transfer case. That is an operating limit, not a diagnostic shortcut.

Confirm which transfer case is installed, scan the relevant modules and test only under safe conditions. Record whether a request completes, returns to the prior state or produces a message. A button lamp, 4x4 badge or seller demonstration does not replace evidence of engagement and disengagement.

Brake-pad percentages remain resettable estimates

The 2025 owner manual describes front and rear brake-pad-life percentages as estimates. The system must be reset when pads are changed, can be reset manually and can be disabled when aftermarket pads without wear sensors are installed. Display state alone cannot establish pad thickness or service quality.

GMC says pads should be replaced as complete axle sets. The manual also distinguishes normal fluid movement as linings wear from a hydraulic leak and warns that adding fluid does not correct a leak. GM's 2025 fleet guide publishes selected 3500HD cab, drive, GVWR, payload and conventional ratings, but its last column is explicitly labelled Max Gooseneck/5th-Wheel Trailering. The 36,000-lb Regular Cab 2WD DRW value carries a footnote requiring the Duramax, Max Trailering Package and a gooseneck hitch. It must not be presented as a 36,000-lb fifth-wheel rating.

The same fleet material publishes 7,290 lb as the maximum payload for that Regular Cab 2WD DRW row and ties the headline to a specific configuration. Because the table does not provide a full engine-and-hitch split for every cell, the values below preserve its combined-column label and do not invent separate fifth-wheel figures.

Use these numbers only as comparison points. Verify the certification, payload and trailering labels, RPOs, installed hitch, completed body, passengers, cargo, pin or tongue weight and axle loads. Upfits and options can materially reduce capacity.

Verdict and purchase checklist

A supportable 2025 Sierra 3500HD purchase is one whose engine and tank RPOs, current VIN result, ECM calibration record, transmission-leak diagnosis, transfer-case identity, brake condition and SRW or DRW load labels agree. Obtain build information, itemized invoices, scan records and upfit documentation before assigning a condition grade.

On an L8T/N2N truck, verify 26V129 completion and investigate any remaining transfer or stall symptom independently. On either engine, inspect the bellhousing area only after cleaning and identify the fluid. On 4WD trucks, confirm the requested range actually completes.
