A 2024 GMC Sierra 3500HD reliability assessment needs exact-year boundaries. The U.S. NHTSA model query reviewed on 16 September 2026 returns three records: a narrow steering-gear production action and two related power-unlatching-tailgate actions. GMC also changed the diesel output and paired both engines with ten-speed automatics. Those primary records support a configuration-aware inspection, but they do not establish a failure rate, rank the year or certify a Canadian VIN.

Identify the changed 2024 powertrain and completed configuration

GMC's 2024 guide rates the available 6.6L Duramax at 470 hp and 975 lb-ft, up from the 2023 guide's 445 hp and 910 lb-ft. The 6.6L gasoline V8 remains rated at 401 hp and 464 lb-ft, but it now joins the diesel in using an Allison ten-speed automatic. A changed specification is not durability evidence; it tells the inspector which hardware and rating table apply.

Record the engine, transmission, cab, bed, drive, SRW or DRW axle, trim, Max Trailering content and installed hitch. Confirm those details from labels and build information rather than a badge. The steering action crosses gas and diesel applications, while the tailgate actions depend on equipment and production scope rather than engine choice.

The exact query has three records, not four

The exact NHTSA query for make GMC, model Sierra 3500 and model year 2024 returns 23V549000, 24V060000 and 24V894000. The 26V530000 accessory tire-and-wheel campaign found in the separately reviewed 2024 Sierra 2500 query is absent, so it is not transferred to this 3500 guide.

The two tailgate records represent an initial action and a later expansion. They should remain visible as separate query records while being treated as related campaign phases, not evidence that one candidate experienced two tailgate failures. Current VIN lookup and repair documentation remain necessary.

23V549 makes steering-gear inspection production-specific

GM's Part 573 filing covers certain 2024 Sierra 2500/3500 trucks that may have received a steering-gear shaft from the supplier's suspect production period. For GMC HD trucks, the filing identifies production dates from 7 through 24 June 2023 and a combined 1,888-vehicle population. That combined number is not a Sierra 3500 count and is not a failure-rate denominator.

The concern is an out-of-specification, improperly heat-treated shaft that may fracture where it attaches to the pitman arm. GM reported no field incidents in the filing's chronology. Dealers inspect the steering gear and replace it only if necessary; the filing does not prescribe automatic replacement for every 2024 truck.

Check the live VIN result, then retain the inspection outcome even when no part was replaced. Separately inspect steering play, leakage, fasteners, linkage, alignment and tire wear. A completed campaign does not certify the rest of the steering system, and a different steering complaint should not be relabelled as this supplier-window condition without diagnosis.

The tailgate actions share a condition but have distinct production scopes

Both 24V060 and 24V894 concern certain HD trucks with the manual gate, power lock and power release identified by RPO QT5. Water can reach an unsealed electronic release switch, cause a short circuit and allow the gate to unlatch while the truck is in Park. GM says control logic prevents release in gear; until repaired, the filings tell owners to verify that the gate is closed and latched before driving.

The initial filing covers GMC HD production through 12 May 2023. The expansion covers 2024 GMC HD production from 1 August 2023 through 8 March 2024 and states that it expands 24V060. Its remedy replaces the exterior touchpad switch assemblies with material intended to improve water resistance.

Confirm the installed gate and VIN result rather than applying the action to every MultiPro or mechanical-latch complaint. Inspect latches, cables, hinges, wiring, connector condition and water evidence. Keep collision damage, overloaded-gate damage and unrelated electrical faults separate from the recalled switch condition.

Brake-pad life is an estimate that can be reset or disabled

The exact-year HD owner manual describes front and rear brake-pad-life percentages as estimates. The system must be reset when pads are changed, can be reset manually and can be disabled when aftermarket pads without wear sensors are installed. A high percentage, missing percentage or recent reset is therefore not a pad-thickness measurement.

GMC specifies replacing pads as complete axle sets. The manual also distinguishes normal lining-related fluid-level movement from a hydraulic leak and warns that topping up does not repair a leak. Inspect pads, rotors, calipers, hoses, parking brake and both axle sets, then reconcile the findings with invoices and the display state.

A campaign-cleared steering gear or repaired tailgate says nothing about brake condition. On a loaded DRW work truck, ask for towing and payload history and look for heat checking, uneven wear or repeated trailer-brake complaints without turning those observations into a model-wide reliability claim.

Trailer-brake messages require truck-versus-trailer separation

The 2024 owner manual gives separate procedures for CHECK TRAILER WIRING and service or reduced-braking messages. A wiring message can follow a trailer connection problem or a vehicle-side fault; the procedure cycles the vehicle and separates the trailer to determine which side needs service. A persistent service message requires dealer attention.

The manual warns that trailer brakes may be partially functional or may not function at all while those messages are displayed. Do not treat clearing a message, seeing the gain display or testing unloaded in a parking lot as proof of correct operation. Inspect the connector, ground, harness and integrated controller, then test the intended trailer safely.

Keep trailer-side wiring, magnets or actuators separate from truck-side controller work. A candidate's conventional, fifth-wheel or gooseneck rating does not establish that its installed brake controller, hitch or trailer wiring is serviceable.

The 36,000-lb maximum is one diesel DRW gooseneck row

GMC's 2024 matrix places the 36,000-lb gooseneck maximum on the Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD DRW row with the Max Trailering Package. The same row publishes a separate 32,000-lb fifth-wheel rating, 20,000-lb conventional rating, 43,900-lb GCWR and 6,489-lb maximum payload. Hitch methods cannot be substituted.

Without Max Trailering, the comparable 2WD DRW diesel row is 35,500 lb gooseneck, still 32,000 lb fifth-wheel, 43,500 lb GCWR and 6,584 lb payload. The gas Regular Cab long-bed 2WD DRW row carries the 7,234-lb published payload maximum, but its fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings are 18,760 lb. Do not combine its payload with the diesel tow maximum.

All figures are manufacturer comparison ratings. Verify the certification, payload and trailering labels, installed hitch, passengers, cargo, pin or tongue weight and actual axle loads for the candidate. Options, bodies and modifications can reduce usable capacity.

A supportable 2024 Sierra 3500HD purchase is one whose VIN results, steering inspection, tailgate RPO and campaign record, gas or diesel powertrain, SRW or DRW branch, brake condition and trailer-control history agree. Obtain current Canadian or U.S. VIN results, build information, itemized invoices and modification records before assigning a condition grade.

Inspect steering operation and underbody linkage, cycle and load-check the tailgate only within safe limits, measure brakes, scan all modules and verify trailer wiring with appropriate equipment.
