The defensible answer is not one universally best LB7 model year. GM's original 2001, 2002 and 2004 Silverado manuals establish distinct year-specific vehicle literature and repeatedly direct diesel owners to the matching diesel supplement. GM's later hard-part evidence bulletin explicitly includes the LB7 but does not publish comparative year-by-year reliability. Start with the latest correctly identified LB7 candidate whose injector, fuel, cooling, transmission and complete-truck records form a coherent chain, but let evidence outrank registration year. A documented earlier truck can be the better purchase than a later, pre-warmed or modified truck with unresolved repairs.

Best-year verdict: start late, then let the candidate win

Begin comparison with a verified later LB7 candidate when condition and documentation are otherwise equal. It may provide a younger chassis and a shorter calendar-age exposure within this early Duramax group.

That is a shopping sequence, not a reliability ranking. The reviewed official sources do not show that a later LB7 has lower injector, fuel, cooling or engine failure frequency.

Choose the candidate with aligned identity, complete maintenance and repair chronology, satisfactory cold/hot/load evidence, safe chassis, legal configuration and credible support. Do not pay for a year label that the installed engine and records cannot prove.

Verify that the candidate is actually an LB7

Factory output cannot establish present condition, payload, towing capacity or remaining life. More claimed power is not a best-year criterion.

Let injector evidence decide more than model year

For rough running, haze, hard starting, fuel knock, low power, correction or balance concerns and suspected fuel in oil, preserve exact codes and condition-specific data. Include return or leak testing, pressure evidence, oil-level trend and technician conclusion.

For prior injector work, record quantity, part numbers, new or remanufactured status, installer, seals and lines, reason for replacement and comparable post-repair result.

An “injectors done” advertisement can describe strong evidence or hide an incomplete repair. The model year cannot tell which; the file and inspection must.

Audit fuel dilution as its own buying gate

For long crank, no-start or low power, preserve codes and operating context. Inspect filters, restriction, air entry, priming, supply path, commanded and actual high pressure, wiring and injector evidence using LB7-specific procedures.

An added lift pump is a configuration fact, not proof that the original cause was found. A high-pressure part invoice is incomplete without the measurement that selected it and a comparable result.

Read GM hard-part evidence as a documentation standard

GM bulletin 08-06-04-006N includes LB7 among legacy Duramax applications and requires specific hard-part and calibration evidence in its warranty workflow.

It is not a current failure-rate study or a buying warranty. Its useful lesson is to preserve codes, measurements, photographs, calibration details and disassembly findings before the evidence disappears.

For a rebuilt or replaced engine, require cause, identity, complete machining and parts scope, installer, reused systems, warranty and post-repair validation. “Built engine” is not enough.

Reconstruct maintenance by date, kilometres, hours and duty

Use the exact-year vehicle manual and diesel supplement. Record oil and filters, fuel filtration, coolant, transmission, transfer case, axles and other scheduled work by date and kilometres, adding engine hours and duty where evidence exists.

Towing, idling, short trips, dust, winter starts and storage make odometer-only histories incomplete. Fresh fluids create a baseline but do not reconstruct earlier intervals.

Use certification and payload labels plus exact-year configuration literature. Record cab, box or body, drivetrain, axle, tire, wheel, hitch and trailer conditions.

Add occupants, cargo, tools, accessories, auxiliary tanks and loaded tongue or pin weight. A published maximum applies only to its stated configuration and assumptions.
