There is no defensible statistical “best year” for the 3.0L Duramax in the primary evidence reviewed here. The useful split is between the earlier LM2 and second-generation LZ0, followed by the exact Silverado 1500 or Sierra 1500 configuration, current VIN status, service history and inspection. The LZ0 offers documented design revisions and higher published output; that does not prove a lower failure rate. Separate LM2 and LZ0 before ranking years
GM calls LZ0 the second generation following LM2 and documents revised piston design/material, fuel injectors and turbocharger along with longer oil-pump-belt validation. These are material engineering changes, not a reliability study.
Use the engine code on records and vehicle information rather than assuming a calendar-year boundary applies to every application. Production timing, vehicle line and replacement engines can make a broad internet year chart unreliable for a specific truck.
Keep service documents generation-specific. A bulletin written for LM2 cannot automatically diagnose LZ0, and a later LZ0 maintenance statement cannot rewrite the original requirements for an LM2 already in service.
Compare published output without converting it into durability
The 2020 and 2023 Chevrolet trailering charts also show that engine choice is only one row in a configuration-specific towing matrix. Cab, drivetrain, axle, wheel/tire and trailering equipment still control the applicable rating.
Do not compare a bare engine output to the loaded suitability of a complete truck. More torque cannot cure insufficient payload, an unsuitable hitch or an undocumented modification.

Treat 2020–2022 LM2 trucks as individual candidates
The reviewed Canadian transmission campaign defines a particular 2020–2022 diesel Silverado/Sierra population. It concerns transmission-control logic and possible valve wear, not an LM2 engine failure rate. Verify the actual VIN and repair order rather than blacklisting all three years.
For a candidate in this era, request oil and filter history, fuel-filter records, warning and regeneration history, cold and hot operation evidence, transmission campaign status and the outcome of any major repair. Match every record to the same VIN and kilometres.
An early truck with a complete chronology and a successful campaign/condition review can be a rational buy. An unresolved shift warning, engine symptom or missing major-maintenance file remains a reason to pause regardless of price.
Treat 2023-and-later LZ0 as a revised era, not an automatic winner
The LZ0's revisions and output make it a meaningful later-era choice. They do not provide a population denominator, comparative failure rate or remaining-life promise. Later model year and lower kilometres also mean less accumulated evidence, not necessarily fewer future repairs.
GM bulletin 23-NA-071 covers specified 2023 LZ0 warning/code conditions and directs technicians to check for an available ECM update before continuing normal diagnostics. That narrow software path does not make every 2023 concern a software issue or every updated truck mechanically healthy.
Request current calibration history, codes, service actions and a comparable recheck. For later years, use their own service information instead of assuming the 2023 bulletin continues unchanged.
Do not use a design revision as a reliability score
Steel pistons, revised injectors, turbocharging changes and extended belt validation are concrete LZ0 differences documented by GM. A change can target output, emissions, durability, manufacturing or several goals; the source does not quantify comparative field outcomes.
Ask what matters to the purchase: documented service access, current condition, remaining scheduled work, towing/payload fit and local parts/support. If a seller claims that one revision eliminates a named problem, request manufacturer or repair evidence tied to that claim.
Use “newer design” and “statistically more reliable” as separate statements. The first can be documented. The second requires comparable population and exposure data that the reviewed set does not provide.
Compare maintenance obligations by the exact manual
The 2021 3.0L diesel supplement documents LM2-specific fuel-system care and scheduled oil-pump-belt replacement. Scheduled work is an ownership obligation, not evidence that the component commonly fails.
GM's LZ0 technical reference says its oil-pump belt was validated to a longer distance. Use the exact vehicle manual and confirmed engine code to determine the applicable schedule; do not copy one number across generations or mix miles and kilometres.
For a used truck approaching major scheduled work, obtain a current scope from a qualified shop. Ask whether access, related parts, transport and downtime are included. A maintenance display reset is not proof that physical work was completed.
Check LM2 wiring evidence without condemning the era
GM 21-NA-149 contains an LM2-specific diagnostic branch for defined rough-running, misfire/low-power and multiple-code conditions, with an application limitation for the cited 2022 Silverado/Sierra entry. It directs attention to wiring before unnecessary control-module replacement.
This is useful buying evidence when the candidate's identity and symptoms match. It is not a frequency table and cannot establish that all LM2 trucks have a harness problem.
For prior wiring work, request the fault location, tests, repair method and result under the original conditions. Several replaced modules with no documented causal finding are weaker evidence than one correctly diagnosed and rechecked wiring repair.
Separate engine, transmission and whole-truck evidence
The Canadian 2024637 campaign concerns defined diesel truck transmissions. A buyer can care about it without calling it a 3.0L engine defect. Keep engine, transmission, aftertreatment, chassis and body findings in separate rows.
Verify campaign status through the current official VIN path and inspect current operation. A completed software remedy answers the campaign question; it does not certify existing mechanical condition or explain a new shift concern.
Likewise, a clean engine scan does not assess brakes, suspension, frame, electrical accessories or collision repair. “Best year” should describe the complete candidate needed for the assignment.
Compare towing years through actual configurations
The Chevrolet 2020 and 2023 trailering charts are configuration matrices, not a single rating for every 3.0L Duramax. Record cab, bed, 2WD/4WD, axle, wheels/tires, hitch type and required trailering package, then use the matching chart and labels.
Calculate payload separately with occupants, cargo, accessories and loaded hitch weight. A later truck with a higher possible trailer rating can still be the wrong candidate when its particular payload or equipment does not fit.
For commercial or frequent towing, describe route, grades, winter use, trailer frontal area, loading repeatability and acceptable downtime. Do not let an engine-year recommendation substitute for a complete towing assessment.
Match the diesel to the actual duty cycle

Confirm service access before choosing a year
Ask a suitable local shop whether it accepts the exact engine generation, vehicle, modifications and requested work. Confirm diagnostic capability, appointment timing, parts path and whether major scheduled work can be completed in-house. A brand sign or general dealer locator does not answer those questions.
For a work or towing vehicle, define recovery distance and a substitute that can handle the same people, cargo and trailer. A repairable truck can still be a poor operational choice when parts or appointments are uncertain and no equivalent substitute exists.
Obtain candidate-specific written scopes for due maintenance and diagnosed findings. Include access, transport, parts, reassembly and validation. Do not select a model year on a generic online repair estimate that omits the actual truck, province and service provider.
Investigate modifications and restoration claims
Identify calibration changes, emissions removal, intake/exhaust work, auxiliary fuel equipment, suspension changes, larger tires and electrical accessories. Ask who performed the work and retain original and current configuration records.
Unknown changes can affect diagnosis, emissions compliance, insurance, warranty and shop acceptance. A claim that tuning improves power or reliability is not manufacturer evidence for the truck.
