Do not move up merely because 6.6 is a larger number, and do not stay with 3.0 because a headline fuel figure looks attractive. Compare complete Silverado or Sierra configurations. A 2500HD and 3500HD are not interchangeable; SRW and DRW, cab, bed, drive, wheels, axle, packages and installed equipment can change the binding limit.

Engines and generations are distinct

GM identifies LZ0 as the second generation of its 3.0L inline-six after LM2 and documents changes to pistons, injectors and turbocharging. GM's current L5P reference separately distinguishes the later 6.6L specification from 2023-and-older L5P engines. Those manufacturer boundaries prevent a current figure from being transferred backward, and neither change statement is a controlled durability study.

The broader 6.6L name also spans LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML and earlier L5P contexts. A used 6.6L comparison therefore needs engine code, model year, transmission and emissions generation, not just displacement. Likewise, a used 3.0L needs LM2/LZ0 identity. Compare the exact two candidates or define separate lanes before assigning specifications, service instructions or repair evidence.

Power is capability input, not a verdict

The current GM engine references support a large output difference between the stated LZ0 and later L5P tests. That matters when the complete HD truck is correctly configured for repeated heavy work. It does not prove acceleration, grade performance, cooling reserve, braking, payload or towing for a candidate, because truck mass, gearing, transmission, axle, tires, body and load remain part of the system.

Do not use peak torque to skip the rating calculation. The half-ton may pass a moderate trailer while offering the preferred everyday package. The HD may provide the required configuration for a heavier trailer yet still need its actual payload, rear axle, tires, wheels, hitch and combination checked. Choose around the verified work, not the engine dyno table.

Payload and towing: find the first binding limit

Start with loaded trailer weight and measured or supportable loaded tongue or pin weight. Add occupants, cab and bed cargo, hitch hardware, accessories and installed equipment. For each candidate, check payload/certification labels, GVWR, front and rear GAWR, tire and wheel limits, manufacturer trailer row, hitch rating and GCWR. Every applicable limit must pass.

Chevrolet's Canadian guide separates 1500, 2500HD and 3500HD configuration tables and retains cab, bed, drive, engine, wheel and equipment conditions. Daily driving and physical fit

Drive the actual candidates on a representative route and measure the spaces they must use. Compare cab access, seating, outward visibility, turning and parking clearance, bed reach, unloaded behaviour, braking feel, tire arrangement and winter routine. A half-ton is not automatically comfortable in every trim, and an HD is not automatically unmanageable; candidate configuration settles the practical result.

Keep preference separate from capability. If both trucks pass the work, daily fit can decide. If only the HD passes, a preferred half-ton ride cannot authorize overload. If neither works in the regular environment, reconsider the truck, trailer or operating plan rather than forcing an engine choice.

Fuel economy requires comparable vehicle evidence

NRCan's current search supports model-year and vehicle-specific fuel-consumption research where a row exists. It is not an engine bench comparison and does not cover every HD configuration or loaded duty. Compare exact listed rows only when class, year, drive and other fields are genuinely comparable; otherwise use controlled logs and disclose their limits.

For candidates, record litres, distance, L/100 km basis, route, load, season, idle/PTO time, tires and modifications over repeated fills. Add DEF and service costs separately. A lower unloaded consumption result cannot compensate for a truck that fails the load, while the HD's capability cannot establish that its higher acquisition and operating exposure is worthwhile for light use.

Reliability: do not compare reputations across classes

No reviewed primary source supplies an exposure-adjusted 3.0-versus-6.6 failure rate. GM bulletins define particular applications and diagnostic conditions. The LZ0 software and harness documents do not describe every LM2/LZ0, and the L5P connector bulletin does not say every pressure-related complaint is mechanical or every 6.6L is affected.

Build parallel evidence files: exact identity, model-year schedule, dated service, warnings and derates, fuel/emissions/cooling work, software and modifications, cold-start observation, model-aware scan, road test, lift inspection, repair invoices and comparable post-repair evidence. Classify findings as supported, repaired and rechecked, unresolved, or not assessed. Do not average unknowns into a brand score.

Maintenance and ownership scope

Use the exact owner literature for the exact engine and truck. The LZ0 technical page's oil-pump-belt validation statement is not a universal truck-life promise, and the 6.6L diesel supplement's operating and maintenance instructions do not apply to the 3.0L. Reconcile kilometres, engine hours, time and duty with invoices rather than relying on a reset monitor.

Map local support before purchase. Confirm that a shop accepts the exact generation, transmission and modifications, has current information and software access, and can explain parts, scheduling, towing or transport. A buyer depending on the truck for income should keep a downtime plan and reserve. No directory entry proves expertise, availability, repair time or price.

Used-market and ready-to-use cost

Compare total transaction obligation, due service, diagnosed repairs, tires, insurance, financing, required hitch or equipment and downtime—not just asking price. An older HD may look inexpensive while carrying heavy-use or corrosion evidence; a newer half-ton may carry more finance exposure. Neither pattern is a prediction about every truck.

Keep unresolved items visible. Price confirmed work from written evidence, maintain a separate uncertainty reserve and run an adverse case. Do not claim fuel savings without matched inputs, resale without current evidence or remaining life from kilometres alone. A documented higher-kilometre truck still needs current condition proof; a low-kilometre truck does not erase age, idle hours, storage, modifications or missing history.

These are shortlist lanes, not model rankings. The exact configuration and candidate evidence can reverse a preference.

  • 3.0L Duramax half-ton: strongest candidate for the buyer whose verified load fits and who values half-ton dimensions and daily use, subject to exact fuel, service and condition evidence.
  • 6.6L Duramax 2500HD: compare when the assignment needs HD configuration but does not automatically require a one-ton payload result.
  • 6.6L Duramax 3500HD SRW: compare when payload reserve or a specific rating path exceeds a suitable 2500HD while DRW is unnecessary.
