A dump body's volume is not its legal or mechanical carrying capacity. Wet material and dense aggregate can reach weight limits before a body looks full.

Build the buying decision

Buy for the material, not the box size

List the actual materials you haul and obtain weight information from the supplier or measured loads. Include moisture and mixed debris in the uncertainty. Avoid converting a body volume into an allowable load using a single assumed density for every job.

Weigh the completed truck with driver, fuel, tools and body equipment. Compare the resulting load budget with the exact vehicle and axle ratings. Record a practical loading method with the supplier so a loader operator does not use the body rails as the only fill target.

Inspect the body and hydraulic system

Ask for the body and hoist models, rated installation documentation, service history and evidence of frame or subframe repairs. Look for corrosion, cracked mounts, leaking hydraulics and damaged controls through a qualified upfit inspection.

Have the seller arrange a demonstration by a qualified operator using the equipment manufacturer's instructions. Do not enter beneath a raised body supported only by hydraulics. Body props, operating interlocks and the correct support procedure belong to the equipment inspection, not an improvised buyer check.

Include trailer and jobsite duties

If the truck also pulls an equipment trailer, evaluate that loaded combination separately. Carrying material in the body and towing equipment can consume the same truck payload budget through cargo and hitch load.

Ask how the truck was loaded, where it operated and whether it regularly worked on uneven or corrosive sites. Review tire, brake and steering condition alongside the engine. Obtain a repair estimate for the upfit as well as the chassis; a sound diesel does not compensate for a body that cannot be safely returned to service.
