A factory single-rear-wheel pickup can be a valid fifth-wheel tow vehicle when one exact truck and one representative loaded trailer pass every applicable gate. SRW is not proven by a model-family maximum, and it is not rejected merely because a DRW version exists. Match year, market, pickup body, cab, bed, drive, engine, axle, GVWR, GCWR, tires, packages and the fifth-wheel source row; then compare the individual truck's labels and installed components with loaded trailer, pin, occupants, hitch and cargo evidence. Ford's separate fifth-wheel and gooseneck columns, RAM's single maximum-trailer cells and Chevrolet Canada's combined in-bed fields stay intact here. DRW and adjacent-model results are not transferred into an SRW claim.

Direct answer: SRW eligibility comes from the loaded combination

Start with a completed factory SRW and a defined fifth-wheel load. If representative pin weight plus people, the installed hitch, cargo and equipment fits the individual truck's available carried-load allowance, continue. Then require loaded front and rear axle weights to pass their GAWR values and the installed tires and wheels. Close the exact fifth-wheel row, hitch rating and installation, GVWR, GCWR, brakes and physical clearance independently. Passing all of them keeps that SRW eligible.

If one gate fails, do not use the engine badge, a lighter advertised trailer number or a nearby DRW maximum to repair the result. Change the permitted load or compare another completed configuration, which may be a higher-rated SRW or a suitable DRW. The purpose of an SRW guide is to identify where a specific SRW works and where it stops, not to publish a universal trailer-size rule.

Identify the complete factory SRW configuration

Use VIN-linked build evidence, certification and tire-and-loading labels, and physical inspection. Confirm that the truck is a completed pickup rather than a chassis cab with an aftermarket body. Record the cab, bed, wheelbase, 2WD or 4x4, engine/output, transmission, axle ratio, GVWR, tire family, wheels, packages and fifth-wheel preparation. A one-ton badge or diesel engine does not select those fields.

Confirm rear-wheel arrangement from the truck and documents. An aftermarket conversion does not make a different certification or towing row appear, and modified suspension does not increase factory GVWR or GAWR. Record wheels, tires, suspension, bed equipment and hitch changes because each can alter empty weight, remaining capacity, fit or component limits even when the original SRW rating still supplies the starting evidence.

Build a representative loaded fifth-wheel and truck-load case

Record trailer VIN, GVWR, empty weight as context, options, batteries, propane, water, tools and ordinary cargo. The useful gross trailer input is the representative loaded state, because cargo amount and placement affect both total weight and load transferred through the kingpin. Retain the loading description with compatible scale evidence so the case can be repeated and updated.

List every load carried by the SRW: people, the complete fifth-wheel hitch and mounting structure, toolbox, auxiliary fuel and tank, bed cover, generator, pets, accessories and other equipment. Add the representative pin to those items. Payload and trailer rating are different constraints; a fifth-wheel maximum does not create enough truck carrying capacity, and remaining payload does not prove the trailer row or GCWR.

Ford's 2026 F-350 SRW rows define a real but broad range

Ford Canada's 2026 Super Duty guide publishes separate F-350 SRW fifth-wheel and gooseneck results across ten body columns, multiple engines, axle and GCWR branches, tire alternatives, packages and source blanks. Across all populated F-350 SRW fifth-wheel alternatives reviewed, the range is 13,500 to 27,400 lb. The separate gooseneck range is 13,600 to 27,600 lb. These endpoints describe the source, not every SRW.

The 27,400-lb fifth-wheel upper result is the all-terrain alternative in a high-output-diesel, 3.55-axle, 35,200-lb-GCWR Regular Cab 4x4 cell; its paired gooseneck alternative is 27,600 lb. A different tire alternative, cab, drive or source row can produce another answer. F-350 DRW and adjacent F-450 values remain separate and cannot fill a blank SRW position.

The SRW payload range does not rate the truck in front of you

Ford Canada's current 2026 F-350 hauling table publishes SRW maximum-payload rows from 3,686 to 5,137 lb. Cab, wheelbase, drive, engine, tire family, package and paired GVWR determine the row. Those figures establish how widely one model's SRW configurations can differ; they are not a promise that every diesel SRW carries the upper endpoint.

Read the individual truck's tire-and-loading label and account for installed equipment and every trip load. Then obtain compatible loaded axle weights. A high published payload row can still fail the rear axle, an installed tire or wheel, the hitch, fifth-wheel table, GCWR or clearance. A lower row can remain suitable for a lighter, measured case. The right comparison holds the trailer and people/cargo assumptions constant across candidate trucks.

RAM Canada's 2026 SRW rows must keep market and hitch limits visible

RAM Canada's 2026 Heavy Duty matrix publishes RAM 3500 gas SRW maximum-trailer values from 14,560 to 17,730 lb. Its highest diesel SRW value is 26,080 lb for the high-output Cummins Regular Cab with 8-foot bed, 4x4, 3.42 axle, 11,830-lb GVWR and 34,000-lb GCWR. Crew and Mega Cab rows are different configurations, not deductions from that maximum.

The Canadian sheet does not publish the U.S. 23,550-lb short-box Crew Cab 4x4 diesel row. Keep that absence instead of backfilling it. RAM also publishes one maximum-trailer column per configuration plus equipment notes, not independent fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings for every row. The 26,080-lb result therefore remains a maximum-trailer cell until RAM supplies a more specific hitch-method result for that row.

Chevrolet's SRW rows show why cab and drive still matter

Chevrolet Canada's 2026 Trailering Guide publishes combined in-bed values for Silverado 3500HD SRW configurations. The Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD row is 22,420 lb, while the 4x4 partner is 22,040 lb. Duramax Double Cab long-bed rows are 21,900 lb for 2WD and 21,590 lb for 4x4. These are four separate source positions, not one rounded diesel SRW rating.

Because the Canadian table combines fifth-wheel and gooseneck in those fields, do not manufacture a hitch split. Use the number only within its source-labelled scope and still verify the individual Canadian truck, installed hitch, carried load and measurements. Chevrolet's higher DRW branches and its U.S. package-specific gooseneck headline do not answer an SRW fifth-wheel question.

Use a pin sensitivity range before measurement closes the case

Ford uses 15 percent of loaded fifth-wheel weight as a planning convention. Chevrolet Canada gives a 15–25 percent convention for fifth-wheel and gooseneck planning. On a hypothetical 18,000-lb loaded fifth-wheel, those conventions produce 2,700 lb at 15 percent and a 2,700–4,500-lb sensitivity range at 15–25 percent. The width of that range can change the SRW result, so brochure dry pin weight is not a defensible final input.

Consider an illustrative SRW with a vehicle-specific carried-load allowance of 4,600 lb. Subtract 950 lb for people, hitch, cargo and equipment, leaving 3,650 lb before pin. A representative 3,200-lb pin leaves 450 lb in that one arithmetic screen. If the pin is 3,900 lb instead, total demand is 4,850 lb and exceeds the allowance by 250 lb. The first case still needs every other gate; the second fails this candidate.

Close rear GAWR, tires, wheels and hitch after the payload subtraction

The fifth-wheel applies vertical load in the bed, but the change at the front and rear axles depends on hitch position, wheelbase, existing load and the complete combination. Remaining payload cannot predict the loaded rear axle. Obtain compatible loaded front and rear axle readings with the representative people, cargo, hitch and trailer, then compare each with the certification-label GAWR value.

Verify installed tire size, load marking, condition and pressure under the manufacturers' instructions. Verify each wheel's rating and compatibility independently; a tire marking does not silently raise the wheel limit. Identify the fifth-wheel hitch model, truck-specific mounts, fasteners, installation and rating. Stop at the lowest applicable truck, axle, tire, wheel, hitch, trailer or component limit.

Check bed geometry, brakes and the SRW operating case

Measure hitch and kingpin position, hitch height, bed-rail and tailgate clearance, cab-to-trailer clearance through the intended steering range, suspension travel and level attitude using the actual truck, trailer and component instructions. A long bed may simplify some geometry, while a short bed may require a compatible system, but bed length alone neither approves nor rejects the combination. Slider, offset and rotating-pin-box equipment remains manufacturer- and combination-specific.

Inspect and test trailer brakes, breakaway equipment, connector, lights and controller setup. Evaluate loading variability, highway and secondary-road use, winter access, parking, ferry and job-site requirements. SRW width can suit some daily use more easily than DRW, but convenience is evaluated only after ratings and fit pass. Finish with a reproducible SRW fifth-wheel evidence file

Keep the truck's VIN-linked configuration and original market with the exact guide row and footnotes. Add certification and loading labels, installed tires and wheels, hitch identification and installation, trailer identity, representative gross and pin weights, people and cargo, loaded axle and combination weights, brakes, clearance, assumptions and unresolved items. Reopen the worksheet whenever the trailer load, water, hitch, truck equipment, tires, wheels or suspension changes.

A Canadian source can establish a published Canadian branch but does not certify equipment, condition or remaining capacity on an unseen VIN.
