Chevrolet's manufacturer-authored 2023 Trailering Guide publishes 64 configuration rows for the Silverado 2500HD with conventional and combined fifth-wheel/gooseneck ratings. The 128 base hitch cells span 10,240 to 18,510 lb, and ten 4WD 18- or 20-inch-wheel rows carry a separate 12,000-lb conventional limit when equipped with the named mud-terrain tire. The 18,510-lb maximum belongs only to the 17-inch-wheel Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD row with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. Cab, bed, drive, engine, wheel/tire branch, GVWR, GCWR and hitch method must all match; neither the 18,500-lb headline nor a nearby row certifies an individual truck.
Direct answer: 10,240 to 18,510 lb across the base cells
The maximum conventional rating is 18,500 lb. It appears on selected Duramax Crew Cab rows with 18- or 20-inch wheels, 27,500-lb GCWR and the applicable all-terrain tire branch. The highest in-bed rating is 18,510 lb on the Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD with 17-inch wheels, 10,550-lb GVWR and 26,000-lb GCWR.
The lowest base cell is 10,240 lb on the optional 10,000-lb-GVWR Duramax Crew Cab long-bed 4WD, 18- or 20-inch-wheel row through a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. Separately, Chevrolet reduces conventional capacity to 12,000 lb on ten marked 4WD rows with LT275/70R18 mud-terrain tires.
| Reference point | Exact branch | Published rating |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum in-bed | Duramax Regular Cab long bed 2WD; 17-inch wheels; 10,550 GVWR / 26,000 GCWR | 18,510 lb |
| Maximum conventional | Selected Duramax Crew Cab 18/20-inch all-terrain rows; 27,500 GCWR | 18,500 lb |
| Lowest base cell | Duramax Crew Cab long bed 4WD; 18/20-inch wheels; 10,000 GVWR; in-bed hitch | 10,240 lb |
| Mud-terrain alternative | Ten marked 4WD conventional rows with LT275/70R18 MT tires | 12,000 lb |
Use the 64-row matrix as a selector
Start with Regular, Double or Crew Cab, then match standard or long bed and 2WD or 4WD. Select the gasoline or Duramax engine, the printed wheel group and exact GVWR. Read GCWR and both hitch cells from that same row. High Country has two separate 20-inch-wheel rows that must not be merged into the generic Crew Cab 4WD positions.
Chevrolet prints dashes where a wheel/GVWR/body combination is not assigned. The tables below retain only the 64 populated rows and do not backfill any source dash. The 2020 compact model-code chart and the adjacent 3500HD matrix are separate evidence.
Regular Cab long-bed rows
Regular Cab is long-bed only in this source. Every base conventional value is 14,500 lb; the 4WD 18/20-inch gas and diesel rows also carry Chevrolet's lower 12,000-lb mud-terrain alternative. In-bed values range from 17,030 to 18,510 lb.

Crew Cab standard-bed rows
Crew Cab standard-bed 2WD and 4WD contribute 16 rows, including two High Country 4WD rows. The optional 10,000-lb-GVWR diesel branches can have a higher conventional than in-bed rating: 18,140 versus 13,470 lb in 2WD, and 17,850 versus 11,530 lb in 4WD.
High Country is not a cosmetic duplicate in this table. Its 20-inch-wheel gas row is 16,280 lb in-bed and its diesel row is 18,310 lb, both below the adjacent generic 4WD endpoints.

Crew Cab long-bed rows
Crew Cab long-bed 2WD and 4WD supply the remaining 16 rows. The lowest base rating in the entire matrix is the 10,240-lb in-bed cell on the optional 10,000-lb-GVWR Duramax 4WD with 18/20-inch wheels. Its conventional rating is 16,560 lb, so hitch columns cannot be ranked by one universal rule.
The long-bed High Country 4WD gas row is 16,170 lb in-bed. Its Duramax counterpart reaches 18,500 lb in both columns, but still remains a named 20-inch-wheel row with its own 11,550-lb GVWR and 27,500-lb GCWR.

Row and rating accounting
The five body tables contain 64 populated source rows: ten Regular Cab, 22 Double Cab and 32 Crew Cab. Each row has one conventional and one combined fifth-wheel/gooseneck cell, for 128 base cells. Ten marked 4WD 18/20-inch rows add a distinct 12,000-lb mud-terrain conventional alternative beside their all-terrain value.
The ten alternatives are disclosed inside the affected conventional cells rather than counted as new configurations. Dashes remain absent, High Country remains separate and repeated values are not deduplicated.
| Branch | Rows | Base hitch cells | Mud-terrain alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab | 10 | 20 | 2 |
| Double Cab | 22 | 44 | 4 |
| Crew Cab | 32 | 64 | 4 |
| Total | 64 | 128 | 10 |
GVWR and GCWR select the correct row
GVWR varies from 9,900 to 11,550 lb across the 64 rows. GCWR is 24,000 lb for gas, 24,500 lb for the two low-GVWR Double Cab diesel rows, 26,000 lb for other diesel rows and 27,500 lb for the highest-GVWR 18/20-inch Crew Cab rows.
Neither rating can be substituted for trailer capacity. GCWR covers the loaded truck-and-trailer combination; GVWR caps the loaded truck. Use Chevrolet's trailer cell and then verify every independent truck, axle, tire, hitch and trailer limit.
Payload and kingpin load remain independent
Chevrolet says conventional tongue weight should be 10–15 percent of loaded trailer weight and fifth-wheel/gooseneck kingpin weight 15–25 percent. Those are planning ranges, not permissions to exceed the truck's payload, rear GAWR, GVWR, tire or hitch limits.
Passengers, cargo, options, accessories and hitch hardware consume carrying capacity. Photograph the certification and tire/loading labels, confirm the Z82 trailering or Z6A prep equipment where applicable, and weigh the completed combination before operating near a published maximum.
Source method, provenance and market limit
The 54-page 2023 Chevrolet Trailering Guide was downloaded from an external brochure archive on 14 September 2026. Its embedded metadata names Chevrolet as author, identifies the title as 2023 Chevy Trailering Guide and records August 2023 creation and modification dates. Printed pages 38–43 were extracted and visually reviewed in full; those six pages print all 64 populated Silverado 2500HD rows with GVWR, GCWR, conventional and combined fifth-wheel/gooseneck values, plus the mud-terrain, bumper-hitch, pickup-box-delete and High Country footnotes.
The archive copy has SHA-256 53bc962342f621828b559d1228a5db3303fa0e1bd0a2c5a8253db8c197d0511b. An active Chevrolet-hosted copy of this exact guide was not recovered, so the external hosting limit remains explicit. The U.S. guide does not certify an unseen Canadian VIN or prove installed equipment. No GMC row, prior-year value, later-year value, calculated capacity, reliability claim or commercial availability statement was imported.
The 2023 matrix matches 2021 and 2022, but the evidence remains year-specific
Chevrolet's 2023 pages reproduce the same 64 populated configurations, 128 base hitch cells and ten mud-terrain alternatives found in the independently reviewed 2021 and 2022 matrices. That equivalence was established from the 2023 pages, not by copying a prior-year table or using an older year to fill a source dash.
The 2023 guide lays the matrix across six printed pages rather than the four-page 2022 presentation. It retains the exact-year bumper-hitch, pickup-box-delete, High Country and LT275/70R18 mud-terrain conditions. This page therefore stays a distinct 2023 canonical with its own evidence trail while linking both earlier siblings for comparison.
FAQ: does every 2023 Duramax 2500HD tow 18,500 lb?
No. Duramax base cells run from 10,240 to 18,510 lb. The 18,500-lb conventional and in-bed values appear only on selected 18/20-inch Crew Cab rows, and two 4WD conventional rows drop to 12,000 lb with the named mud-terrain tire.
FAQ: why can conventional exceed in-bed capacity?
The optional 10,000-lb-GVWR Crew Cab diesel rows can publish a higher conventional than in-bed value because each source cell is constrained by its complete configuration and load path. For example, the long-bed 4WD 18/20-inch row is 16,560 lb conventional and 10,240 lb in-bed. Do not replace either number with the larger one.
