GMC's official 2020 trailering guide publishes 28 Sierra 3500HD configurations and 84 separate trailer-rating cells across single- and dual-rear-wheel, gas and Duramax branches. Published values span 14,500 to 35,500 lb. The 35,500-lb maximum belongs only to the Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD dually row with a gooseneck hitch; that row is 32,000 lb for fifth-wheel use and 20,000 lb for conventional towing. Cab, drive, rear-wheel arrangement, engine, GCWR and hitch method must all match before a number is applied, and the U.S. table does not certify an unseen Canadian VIN.

Direct answer: 14,500 to 35,500 lb, depending on the exact truck

The highest 2020 Sierra 3500HD conventional rating in GMC's matrix is 20,000 lb. The fifth-wheel maximum is 32,000 lb, while the gooseneck maximum is 35,500 lb. Those three endpoints do not belong to one interchangeable hitch setup: all occur in diesel branches, and the two in-bed maxima are confined to the Regular Cab long-bed 2WD DRW row.

The lowest published trailer cells are the 14,500-lb conventional ratings assigned to every SRW gas configuration and to four SRW diesel rows. A model badge or engine alone therefore cannot identify the correct capacity.

Use the matrix as a selector, not a family headline

Start with pickup identity, then match SRW or DRW, engine, cab, long or standard bed, and 2WD or 4WD. Read the GCWR printed on that same row, then choose the conventional, fifth-wheel or gooseneck column that matches the installed towing system.

Do not move a value between rows because two trucks share an engine. The diesel SRW table uses 29,700-lb GCWR throughout, while diesel DRW rows use 40,000 or 43,500 lb. The gas branches use 24,000 lb, yet their conventional and in-bed ratings still change by configuration.

Duramax SRW: eight complete configurations

The SRW diesel branch contains eight rows. Crew Cab configurations reach 20,000 lb conventionally, but their in-bed values vary from 21,040 to 21,500 lb. Regular and Double Cab conventional ratings remain 14,500 lb in the published table.

Duramax DRW: six complete configurations

Every diesel dually row is rated at 20,000 lb conventionally. Five rows show matching fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings from 31,180 to 31,760 lb. The Regular Cab 2WD row is the sole exception: GMC prints 32,000 lb for fifth-wheel towing and 35,500 lb for gooseneck towing.

That top row also carries the only 43,500-lb GCWR in the 2020 Sierra 3500HD matrix. The remaining diesel DRW configurations are 40,000 lb, so the maximum must not be transferred to another cab or drivetrain.

6.6L gas SRW: eight complete configurations

All eight gas SRW rows use a 24,000-lb GCWR and a 14,500-lb conventional rating. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck values match within each row, but decline from 17,200 lb on the Regular Cab 2WD to 16,410 lb on the Crew Cab long-bed 4WD.

6.6L gas DRW: six complete configurations

The gas dually rows are not a single repeated rating. Conventional capacity runs from 16,300 to 16,800 lb, and the in-bed columns run from 16,180 to 16,800 lb. On three rows the conventional value is higher than the fifth-wheel or gooseneck value; the larger number must not replace the hitch-specific cell.

Fifth-wheel and gooseneck happen to match throughout the gas DRW source rows. They remain separate columns because GMC publishes both, and the equality is not a promise about the installed hitch or another model year.

Matrix accounting: 28 rows and 84 trailer cells

Each populated conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck position is counted separately. Repeated values remain attributable to their own configuration; no row is deduplicated and no adjacent Sierra 2500HD value is imported.

Powertrain evidence identifies the row, not the final limit

GMC's 2020 guide identifies the Duramax as a 6.6L turbo-diesel rated at 445 hp and 910 lb-ft, paired with the Allison 10L1000 ten-speed and a 3.42 final drive. The 6.6L gasoline V8 is rated at 401 hp and 464 lb-ft, paired with the 6L90 six-speed and a 3.73 final drive.

Those specifications help select the correct half of the matrix, but neither horsepower nor torque supplies trailer capacity. Rear-wheel arrangement, body, drive, GCWR, hitch type, installed equipment and actual loading remain independent constraints.

SRW and DRW are separate vehicle configurations

A dually is not merely an SRW truck with a larger number. GMC separates the branches and changes GCWR, conventional capacity and in-bed capacity. Verify the actual rear axle and wheel arrangement before comparing a rating.

The DRW table also uses long beds throughout, while the diesel and gas SRW tables include standard-bed Crew Cab rows. Do not create a short- or standard-bed dually row that GMC does not publish.

GCWR does not replace the trailer-rating cell

GCWR is the maximum combined weight of the properly equipped truck and trailer under GMC's definition. It is not an extra trailer allowance and should not be reported as towing capacity. The applicable trailer cell can also be reduced by the loaded truck, axle ratings, payload, hitch equipment, tire limits or another component.

Passengers, cargo, accessories, the hitch and pin or tongue weight all consume truck capacity. Verify loaded truck and axle weights on a suitable scale before treating the catalogue cell as usable operating margin.

Verify a Canadian truck with its own labels and documents

The configuration matrix is a U.S.-market GMC source. It supports the published 2020 row values but does not establish Canadian-market equipment, certify a VIN, or decide provincial or territorial compliance. Use the individual truck's certification label, tire-and-loading label, build information, owner's manual and installed hitch documentation.

If an upfit, replacement body or altered hitch is present, obtain the completed-vehicle and installer records. Do not assume an original pickup-table value survives an undocumented modification.

Source method and limits

The 56-page GMC guide was retrieved from GMC and hashed SHA-256 e3874991d5e32229fe2b4a0d246ef2aa39e8b6632fec66e191b81d168db1777e. Its numbered page 4 was visually reviewed on 14 September 2026. The full Sierra 3500HD diesel and gas tables were transcribed independently from the adjacent 2500HD rows.

The page preserves every published 3500HD trailer cell and the distinct 32,000/35,500-lb fifth-wheel/gooseneck split. Payload figures printed beside the source rows are not converted into towing capacity, and no missing configuration is inferred.

Common 2020 Sierra 3500HD questions

These answers stay within the manufacturer matrix and do not substitute for the completed truck's documents.

QuestionAnswer
Can every 2020 Sierra 3500HD tow 35,500 lb?No. GMC assigns 35,500 lb only to the Duramax Regular Cab long-bed 2WD DRW gooseneck row.
Is the maximum fifth-wheel rating also 35,500 lb?No. The same top configuration is 32,000 lb for fifth-wheel towing.
What is the maximum conventional rating?20,000 lb on the listed Duramax Crew Cab SRW and Duramax DRW rows.
Are gas and diesel ratings interchangeable? No. GMC publishes separate powertrain tables with different GCWR and trailer values.
Does this certify a Canadian VIN?No. Confirm the individual truck, equipment, labels and Canadian documents.
