A 2020 RAM 3500 purchase needs more than confirmation that it has a Cummins engine and a recent transmission service. The standard-output/68RFE and high-output/Aisin branches have different fluid requirements, service checkpoints and campaign evidence. This guide, reviewed on 15 September 2026, turns the exact-year manufacturer chart, selected owner-manual pages and eleven retrieved U.S. campaign records into questions for a specific used pickup. It does not turn a model-level search into a failure rate, a ranking or Canadian VIN clearance.

Identify the transmission before interpreting a service invoice

RAM's 2020 completed-pickup chart separates the standard-output 6.7L Cummins with a six-speed 68RFE from the high-output Cummins with a six-speed Aisin AS69RC. Single-rear-wheel and dual-rear-wheel configurations appear in both diesel branches. Neither 'dually' nor 'six-speed' uniquely identifies the transmission.

The official 2020 owner manual assigns ATF+4 to the diesel/68RFE combination and Mopar ASRC fluid or equivalent to the diesel/Aisin AS69RC. An invoice that says only 'automatic transmission fluid' leaves the product and application unresolved. Ask the servicing shop to identify what was used and which unit it serviced; this is a records check, not an instruction to mix fluids or perform a generic flush.

Transmission identity also matters when reviewing W03. That campaign explicitly names the 68RFE pickup application. Do not tell an Aisin owner that a different transmission's remedy proves their truck has been repaired, or that different hardware establishes superior measured reliability.

W03 and ZA3 describe similar symptoms but different operations

W03 / 20V043000 covers specified 2019–2020 RAM 2500 and 3500 pickups with six-speed 68RFE transmissions. Pressure and heat may cause fluid leakage through the dipstick tube. The published remedy combines replacement of the valve-body separator plate with PCM reprogramming.

ZA3 / 22V835000 separately identifies certain 2020–2023 RAM 2500 and 2020–2022 RAM 3500 vehicles and a pressure/heat-related dipstick-tube leak. Its published operation is replacement of the transmission dipstick and vent assembly. The reviewed model-query summary does not identify a transmission model, so it is not used here to declare every Aisin or every 68RFE truck eligible.

A W03 separator-plate invoice is not a ZA3 dipstick-and-vent invoice. Resolve both identifiers against the candidate's current manufacturer VIN record and retain the completed operations. A normal test drive does not prove either action was completed. Leaking fluid may contact an ignition source; active leaks, smoke or overheating require professional attention rather than a buyer's loaded-trailer experiment.

The maintenance schedule distinguishes fluid changes from filter work

The selected diesel schedule uses mileage or time, whichever comes first. It lists Aisin AS69RC fluid changes at 30,000 miles / 48,000 km / 24 months, then 60,000 / 96,000 / 48, 90,000 / 144,000 / 72 and 120,000 / 192,000 / 96. Those are the reviewed table's listed checkpoints through 120,000 miles, not a claim that its final column authorizes an unlimited interval.

A separate Aisin fluid-and-sump-filter row is marked at 60,000 miles / 96,000 km / 48 months and 120,000 miles / 192,000 km / 96 months. The 68RFE police, fleet or frequent-trailer-towing fluid-and-filter row has those same two marked checkpoints. Do not collapse the Aisin's intermediate fluid changes into its less frequent filter events.

For an older truck with low odometer distance, elapsed time still matters. Compare dated invoices with transmission identity and actual use, especially sustained towing or fleet history. These selected pages do not replace the complete maintenance schedule or current manufacturer instructions, and routine service is not proof of a campaign remedy.

Dually axle lubricant and wheel-stud records deserve separate checks

The manual's selected chassis-fluid page distinguishes SAE 75W-85 HD RAM GL-5 synthetic lubricant for the 9.25-inch front axle and 11.5- and 12.0-inch single-rear-wheel rear axles from SAE 75W-140 Mopar GL-5 synthetic for the 12.0-inch dual-rear-wheel rear axle. It also specifies limited-slip additive for limited-slip axles. Confirm the installed axle rather than applying a generic 'RAM differential oil' description.

Y26 / Y36 / 21V398000 is a different wheel-hardware concern: incorrect published torque information could produce over-tightened flanged lug nuts, broken studs and possible wheel separation. Its remedy includes corrected instructions plus stud inspection and replacement when necessary.

Consequently, this guide does not reproduce a historical flanged-lug torque value from the archived manual. Obtain the applicable corrected procedure and campaign record. Axle-oil service does not certify wheel-stud condition, and a wheel rotation receipt does not necessarily document the prescribed stud inspection.

Separate fuel-pump and equipment records from chassis-cab exclusions

Y21 / 21V439000 and W57 / 20V511000 explicitly concern specified 3500/4500/5500 cab chassis vehicles: low-oil-volume warning calibration and inadequate warm-up protection respectively. Z20 / 22V140000 specifies RAM 3500 cab chassis below 10,000-lb GVWR within its wider ABS/ESC-warning population. These three entries are retained as scope exclusions, not assigned to a completed 3500 pickup simply because the search returns them.

After those exclusions, the remaining eight entries still need individual VIN matching. W03, ZA3 and Y26/Y36 are discussed above; the other five are summarized below. No campaign count is a count of failures on a candidate.

Match the intended load, then judge the specific truck

The Mega Cab figures are the printed 2020 values; neither a 2019 figure nor subtraction from GCWR is substituted for 32,880 lb. The 35,100-lb maximum belongs to the specified Regular Cab 4x2 DRW high-output/4.10 example. The source supplies one maximum-trailer column, not independent conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings. Box-off and chassis-cab rows are outside these examples.

Use the actual vehicle labels, axle and tire limits, installed hitch rating and loaded weights. Occupants, cargo, accessories and tongue or pin load consume truck capacity. Before committing to purchase, reconcile current Canadian manufacturer VIN information, fuel-system repair details, both transmission actions where applicable, correct fluids and dated service, wheel studs, tires, brakes, steering and suspension. Arrange an independent cold-start and road-test inspection; defer the purchase if material leaks, warning history or undocumented modifications remain unresolved.

For this 2020 truck, Stellantis bulletin 21-002-23 Rev. B has a narrow replacement-history condition: the 2019–2021 model-year branch applies only when a complete NEW transmission was replaced between 1 February and 18 December 2022. It also specifies Aisin equipment and a vehicle build cutoff of 1 December 2022. Check AS69RC/DF2 identification and the replacement invoice; do not apply this K1 snap-ring bulletin to every original 2020 Aisin or a 68RFE.
