GM describes LZ0 as the second-generation 3.0L Duramax after LM2 and documents changes to combustion, injectors and turbocharging. That engineering description supports identity and service-planning distinctions, not a claim that every LZ0 is more reliable than every LM2 or EcoDiesel. Confirm the installed RPO and retrieve the exact vehicle literature.
Stellantis' 2020 EcoDiesel announcement documents 260 hp and 480 lb-ft for the revised RAM 1500 application and states the increase over its predecessor. Earlier DS and later DT trucks must remain separate because body, transmission, axle, towing matrix and campaign context differ. Do not apply a later output or repair instruction to an earlier truck.
Towing and payload: the truck decides
An engine torque number cannot prove trailer fit. For either brand, start with the loaded trailer and truck-carried people, cargo, accessories and hitch load. Check the exact truck's payload/certification labels, axle and tire limits, model-year configuration row, hitch equipment and combination limit. A truck can have the preferred engine and still be the wrong cab, box, drive, axle or package.
RAM's original 2021 DT matrix separates EcoDiesel rows by 3.21, 3.92 and Max Tow contexts; the 2018 DS chart and 2019 Canadian Classic chart describe a different generation. For used candidates, add repeated full-tank records with explicit L/100 km or MPG basis, route, load, season, idle/PTO use, tires and modifications. Dashboard displays and seller claims are leads, not controlled evidence. A small consumption advantage may be overwhelmed by purchase condition, repair exposure, insurance, financing or downtime.
Daily use belongs to the complete truck
Engine selection does not settle cab access, seating, visibility, ride, braking feel, parking clearance, box length, winter traction, tire replacement or driver-assistance equipment. Compare the two actual trucks on the same representative route, with the people and ordinary cargo that will travel in them. Start with written transaction figures for the two candidates, then add taxes and fees, finance cost, immediate maintenance, confirmed repairs, tires, insurance, inspection, registration and any equipment required for the defined work. Keep a separate reserve for unresolved findings and downtime. Do not estimate that reserve from an online engine ranking; price diagnosed work where possible and keep genuine unknowns visible.
An older truck with a lower asking price may require more immediate work; a newer truck may carry more financing or depreciation exposure.
