RAM 1500 EcoDiesel towing capacity is not one rating for every diesel half-ton. RAM's U.S. 2023 DT weight-and-tow chart reaches 12,560 lb only for the listed 4x2 Quad Cab Tradesman with the 6-foot-4-inch box, 3.92 axle and Max Tow package at 18,200-lb GCWR. The same chart's reviewed EcoDiesel entries run from 7,710 to 12,560 lb as cab, box, drive, axle and package change. Earlier DS/Classic trucks use a different engine generation, 8HP70 transmission and model-year matrix; RAM Canada's 2019 Classic chart reaches 9,210 lb. This guide keeps those generations and exact configurations separate. Sources were checked on 9 September 2026.
Exact 2023 answer
The highest EcoDiesel cell in RAM's 2023 chart is 12,560 lb. That row is not a generic engine rating: it identifies a 4x2 Quad Cab Tradesman, 6-foot-4-inch box, 3.0L V6 turbo diesel, 8HP75 eight-speed, 3.92 axle, 7,200-lb GVWR, 18,200-lb GCWR and Max Tow package.
The adjacent standard 3.92 row for that reviewed configuration is 10,180 lb at 15,600-lb GCWR. The 2,380-lb difference is created by the package/GCWR row, not by the EcoDiesel badge alone. A prospective truck needs build-sheet or equipment evidence for the Max Tow package before the 12,560-lb figure is considered.
2023 EcoDiesel range by axle and package
These are extrema observed in the published EcoDiesel rows, not permission to interpolate. The chart includes distinct HFE, Tradesman and Big Horn configurations with Quad or Crew Cab, 5-foot-7-inch or 6-foot-4-inch boxes and 4x2 or 4x4 drive. If the truck's full configuration is absent or uncertain, do not select the nearest-looking number.
| 2023 reviewed row family | GCWR | Published maximum-trailer range | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.21 axle | 13,900 lb | 7,710–8,480 lb | Range across listed cab, box, trim and 4x2/4x4 cells; not one continuous rating |
| 3.92 axle, standard row | 15,600 lb | 9,410–10,180 lb | Exact configuration still selects the cell |
| 3.92 axle, Max Tow row | 18,200 lb | 12,560 lb | 4x2 Quad Cab Tradesman, 6-foot-4-inch box in the reviewed matrix |
Max Tow package availability is narrow
The 2023 Fleet Buyer Guide describes the Max Tow package as a 10-inch axle with 3.92 ratio, Trailer-Tow Group, 18-by-8-inch aluminum wheels and LT18 on/off-road tires. It lists the package for the 5.7L HEMI with eTorque and 3.0L EcoDiesel on 4x2 Quad Cab models only.
That equipment restriction supports the chart's high row, but neither a 3.92 axle nor a trailer-brake controller by itself proves the complete package. Confirm the sales/build codes and installed equipment. A 4x4, Crew Cab, different box or different trim must use its own published row even if a seller advertises the engine maximum.
2021 shows why the selector matters
RAM's 2021 chart assigns the same 12,560-lb headline maximum to its Max Tow configuration, yet standard 3.92 EcoDiesel rows remain around 9,540–10,080 lb and 3.21 rows around 7,840–8,380 lb. It also publishes differing payload and base-weight values across cab, box and drivetrain combinations.
The 2022 buyer guide retains the narrow 4x2 Quad Cab Max Tow availability. Repeated headline maxima across adjacent years therefore do not remove the need for the exact annual chart, equipment record and truck labels.
| 2021 EcoDiesel row family | GCWR | Reviewed maximum-trailer range |
|---|---|---|
| 3.21 axle | 13,900 lb | 7,840–8,380 lb |
| 3.92 axle, standard row | 15,600 lb | 9,540–10,080 lb |
| 3.92 axle, Max Tow row | 18,200 lb | 12,560 lb |
Earlier DS and Classic EcoDiesel trucks are separate
The 2018 RAM 1500 matrix covers the earlier DS-generation EcoDiesel with the 8HP70 eight-speed and publishes a maximum of 9,210 lb rather than the later DT generation's 12,560 lb. RAM Canada's 2019 1500 Classic specification chart likewise lists the 3.0L EcoDiesel with the 8HP70, 3.55 or 3.92 axle ratios and a highest shown trailer rating of 4,177 kg (9,210 lb).
Do not use a 2023 DT table for a 2018 or 2019 Classic, and do not use a Classic figure for a later DT. The 2019 model year can be especially confusing because the body/generation name matters in addition to the calendar year and engine badge. Confirm VIN, model designation, engine, transmission, cab, box, drive and axle ratio before opening the correct matrix.
Payload can govern before the trailer maximum
The 2023 Max Tow row publishes 7,200-lb GVWR, 4,955-lb base weight and 2,240-lb rounded payload alongside the 12,560-lb trailer figure. That payload is a generic base-vehicle value. Factory options, accessories, passengers, cargo, hitch equipment and trailer tongue weight consume it on the actual truck.
RAM's 2021 chart explicitly states that payload and maximum trailer weight are mutually exclusive and that GAWR, GVWR and GCWR must not be exceeded. This means the headline trailer value and headline payload cannot both be loaded onto the truck simultaneously. Use the door/certification and carrying-capacity labels plus separate loaded axle and combination scale weights.
The lowest applicable rating controls
The safe planning result is the lowest applicable limit, not simply GCWR minus curb weight. The trailer itself also needs its GVWR, loaded weight, axle/tire limits, brake equipment and coupling hardware checked. Modifications or replacement tires and wheels do not automatically inherit the original truck rating.
| Limit | What must be verified |
|---|---|
| Published trailer row | Exact year, generation, engine, transmission, cab, box, drivetrain, axle, GCWR and package |
| Truck payload and GVWR | Actual labels, occupants, cargo, accessories, hitch and tongue weight |
| Front and rear GAWR | Loaded axle weights, tires and wheels |
| Receiver and hitch hardware | Receiver label, ball mount, ball, coupler, weight-distribution instructions and installation |
| GCWR | Loaded truck plus loaded trailer against the exact powertrain row |
Canadian verification
The 2023 and 2021 weight-and-tow matrices summarized above are U.S. manufacturer charts. They do not establish the rating of an individual Canadian truck. The 2019 Classic document is a Canadian-market source, but it applies only to the identified DS/Classic generation and cannot validate a later DT.
For a Canadian RAM, retrieve the exact model-year manual and build/equipment record, inspect the door and carrying-capacity labels, identify the receiver and hitch hardware, and weigh the loaded truck and trailer. No VIN, sales-code report, label photograph or scale ticket was supplied for this page, so it does not claim that a particular Canadian EcoDiesel can use any maximum shown.
Used-truck towing evidence to collect
Start with identity: VIN, model year, DS/Classic or DT generation, cab, box, 4x2/4x4, axle ratio, engine and transmission. Then obtain the build sheet or sales codes, especially Max Tow evidence, and photograph the certification/carrying-capacity, receiver, ball-mount and tire labels.
Inspect the receiver attachment, corrosion, collision repairs, frame and suspension, trailer wiring, seven-pin socket, brake-controller operation and any weight-distribution hardware. Compare current tire and wheel load ratings with the original specification. Finally, scale the truck with normal occupants, fuel, cargo and hitch installed, then weigh the combination and axles with the intended loaded trailer.
How to use the RAM towing chart
First identify the exact model year and generation; then match cab, box, drivetrain, trim/row family, 3.21 or 3.92 axle and Max Tow status. Record the table's GVWR, base weight, payload, front/rear GAWR, GCWR and maximum trailer value as one row rather than copying only its last number.
Subtract real occupants, cargo, accessories, hitch and tongue load from the truck's actual carrying-capacity allowance. Compare measured front axle, rear axle, truck and combination weights with every label and component limit. If any identity or equipment field remains unresolved, treat the advertised maximum as unverified and choose a lower documented configuration or obtain manufacturer/dealer records.
